Chapter 21: Superfluous (1/2)

Chapter 11: Superfluous

"Xiao He, is it really edible if it is steamed like this?" Aunt Liu looked at the steam coming out of the pot and was a little worried. Will it be edible without sugar?

"If you're worried, this pot is hot. You can have a taste first." Jiang He said with a smile.

"Grandma, there's something delicious in the pot!" Although Aunt Liu didn't say this, several little heads appeared behind her, and they kept glancing at the steaming cakes on the stove out of the corner of their eyes.

"It's over." As soon as Jiang He said these two words, all the children around him cheered.

Soon, he brought out a pot of steamed sour plum cake and cut it into small pieces according to Aunt Liu's instructions.

Each of the children present got a portion. Jiang He also packed the portions he had mentioned earlier and handed them to Xiao Liuzi standing beside him, "Take them back and share them with your brothers and sisters. I'll be back soon."

"Oh!" Xiao Liuzi smelled the fragrance inside the oil-wrapped paper and swallowed his saliva, then he couldn't wait to run out.

"Hey, Xiao He, you treat Xiao Liuzi better than his uncle," Aunt Liu said with emotion. "If his uncle and aunt were as kind as you, the child wouldn't have to suffer so much."

"Mom, what are you cooking? It smells so good?" Two people walked in from outside the yard. They looked somewhat similar to Aunt Liu. They should be his two sons. When he saw Jiang Heshi, a look of wariness appeared on his face.

"Didn't I ask Xiao He to cook something for me? Xiao Lian has been losing her appetite and nausea these past two days. How can she bear it if she continues to suffer like this? I saw that Xiao He was good at making sour plum soup, so I wanted him to teach me, but I didn't expect that he could also make sour plum cakes. I just took two and gave them to your wife. She finally had an appetite and drank a bowl of porridge." Aunt Liu saw that her two sons looked unhappy, so she quickly explained, "Xiao He, this is my son Daniu, and that one is Niu. Daniu was a bit naive when he was young, so don't be angry."

To be honest, she didn't have any bad impression of these newly arrived educated youth. In fact, she was a little skeptical about the incident that happened in Liu Xi's family in the village before.

The educated youth named Yang was good-looking, well-educated, and well-mannered. After that incident, she was the first one who did not believe it.

After all, to be honest, the girl of Liu Xi's family, apart from her good looks, has a very unpleasant personality. She flirts with young guys in the village all day long and gets free food and drinks from them.

If someone says that she is crazy, then she is crazy. She feels that this matter is very strange, but her words are not taken seriously, so she can only keep these things in her heart.

"It's okay. Anyone would be a little worried if a stranger suddenly appeared at home." Jiang He didn't care. After all, this was the case in the current situation.

"I don't mean it." After hearing his mother's words, although Da Niu's face was no longer guarded as before, his tone did not change much.

"Well, Aunt Liu, I'll go home first. My family is waiting for dinner." Jiang He didn't say anything. He packed up his things and prepared to leave.

"Hey, Xiao He, wait a moment." Aunt Liu called Jiang He and then ran to the kitchen to get a bunch of dried corn. "I haven't thanked you much today, so this is my token of appreciation."

Jiang He quickly stopped Aunt Liu's action and said, "I have already taken a lot of cakes just now, you should keep these." At this time, no matter in the city or in the countryside, basically no one had much food stored in the family, and he really didn't want to accept other people's offers.

"That won't do. In our village, no one accepts gifts from others without giving something in return. Listen to what Auntie said and take it back. Even if you don't want to eat it, Xiaoliuzi and Xiaoqi will take it too." Auntie Liu stuffed the corn into Jiang He's arms without saying a word. Then, fearing that he would give it back, she quickly walked into the yard.

"Thank you." Jiang He could only helplessly carry the corn back. The cows in the yard stared at him, but no one was in sight.
