Chapter 41: Dark Shadow
Jiang He looked up at the sky and found that the sun had begun to set in the west. The sky gradually darkened and the people over there also stopped.
"That's not right, Uncle Gazi, did we go the wrong way?" One of the villagers observed the surrounding environment and suddenly said.
The middle-aged man called Uncle Gazi looked under a nearby tree and frowned. "If the wolves were really wandering around here, they would have left some feces or something like that as a mark. Wolves are a species with a very strong sense of territory. This is indeed a bit abnormal."
"Do you want to continue following?" Another villager holding a double-barreled shotgun asked while being alert to the surrounding environment.
Uncle Gazi threw away the mud in his hand and frowned. He then turned over the weeds on the roadside and did not find the trace he was looking for. "How could it be gone?"
"Dashan, what do you think we should do now? It's getting dark soon, and we'll easily get lost if we keep wandering around in the woods like this." It was the villager who had just raised the question. He looked up at the sky. It was getting darker and darker, which made him feel more and more uneasy. After all, there was something really weird about the Dead Man's Ditch.
Hearing what he said, the other villagers looked at each other and became a little hesitant. If they continued to go forward, they would really get lost. The villagers who were called Dashan people showed confusion on their faces, "Uncle Gazi, why don't you go back first and see if Erniu has gone back? Maybe..." When he said this, he choked with sobs and couldn't say any more.
Uncle Gazi shook his head quickly, "What are you talking about, kid? We finally found this place, why don't we go a little deeper? It might be a good thing that we can't find the wolves. Maybe the little girl is just playing hide-and-seek with us and hiding somewhere?"
Although Uncle Gazi didn't say so, everyone present had the worst in mind. After all, how could a child fight against a wolf, or even several wolves?
"Gao Zhi...Comrade Gao, what do you think?" Uncle Gazi looked at Gao Youhui and asked. To be honest, he didn't expect that this young man would stand up for something that happened in their village. This made him feel that his previous ideas were a bit narrow-minded.
Gao Youhui heard his name being called, and then he came up with a not-so-good idea, "I don't see any bloodstains around here, and Uncle Gazi also said that there are no signs of wolf activity here. Could it be that this is actually a misunderstanding?"
In fact, whether there were wolves or not, he knew best that he was the one who caused the wolf howls before, and the reason was to find an opportunity to enter the woods. As for why the child's shoes were next to the forest? To be honest, he didn't understand the reason.
Seeing that everyone was beginning to ponder, he continued, "It's so late now, it's not a good idea to go any further. Why don't we find a place to rest and light a fire first, and then go back to the other side tomorrow to have a look, is that okay?"
After hearing what Gao Youhui said, Dashan closed his eyes deeply and then opened them again, "Just rest here. If you still can't find her tomorrow, just consider it Erniu's fate!" He also knew that the villagers had done their best by following him into such a deep forest, and he didn't have the face to let them continue to take risks to help him find his sister.
Uncle Gazi patted Dashan on the shoulder and nodded in agreement with Gao Youhui's suggestion. After all, there was no other way. A few of them found a tree with a hole in it and sat down. Then they built a bonfire, skinned the wild rabbit they had shot along the way, and prepared dinner.
"Have a meal first." Just as the aroma of roasted rabbit wafted over to Jiang He, Lu Mingfeng took out a chicken leg wrapped in oil paper from his clothes pocket.
