Chapter 157: The Eldest Son’s Filial Piety

Chapter 157: The Filial Piety of the Eldest Son (Page 1/2)

At six o'clock in the afternoon on the twenty-seventh day of the lunar calendar, Huo Junshan was sitting in the hall drinking tea when he suddenly heard a knock on the door.

He quickly got up and opened the door, only to see a postman standing outside with a large woven bag tied to the back seat of his bicycle.

Huo Junshan ran over happily, feeling very happy because the New Year's goods sent by his eldest son had finally arrived.

In the past, when his eldest son sent them local specialties, he would take the receipt to the post office to pick up the package. This time, the post office staff were so nice that they delivered the package personally.

"Xiao Gao, why did you deliver the package to us this time?"

Postman Gao Xin smiled and said softly, "The Spring Festival is almost here. I was worried you might be too busy to pick up the package, so I took some time out of my free time today to deliver it to you."

"Thank you so much, Xiao Gao!"

Huo Junshan responded gratefully and signed his name on the mailing list.

Then, he and Gao Xin carefully moved the huge package off the back seat of the bicycle.

Immediately afterwards, Huo Junshan could no longer suppress his inner anxiety and quickly picked up a knife to cut the seal of the package.

When he opened the bag, what he saw was exactly what he expected.

At the top were neatly arranged bags of candy and biscuits, in the middle were probably some dried papaya shreds and dried vegetables; the bottom of the bag was filled with various dried seafood.

Huo Junshan happily untied the bag of candy, grabbed a handful of colorful fruit candies, stuffed them into Gao Xin's pocket, and said with a smile:

"Xiao Gao, thank you so much for helping deliver this package to my house today. I'll definitely treat you to a glass of good wine someday."

"You're welcome, Uncle Huo. I'll take my leave now." Gao Xin answered politely and turned to leave.

Huo Qingyan had just returned home from get off work. Before he even stepped into the house, he saw from afar his father struggling to drag a heavy bag towards the yard.

He ran over with a smile: "Dad, this must be the New Year's gifts sent back by my eldest brother and his wife from the island. They are really thoughtful! These are too heavy, let me help you."

After saying that, Huo Qingyan came to help Huo Junshan move the package into the house.

Huo Junshan smiled with satisfaction after hearing his second son's words, and said with emotion, "Yes, your eldest brother and his wife are truly filial."

"Dad, what you said is really strange! Why do I feel like you look down on me as your son? Do you think I'm not filial enough?"

Huo Junshan quickly waved his hands and explained, "Hey, kid, what are you thinking? When did I ever say I disliked you for being unfilial?

You and your older brother are both good children, and both are very filial. However, in comparison, you may not be as calm and sophisticated as your older brother.

Then, Huo Junshan seemed to suddenly remember something important and added, "Oh, by the way! Tomorrow you must remember to go to the Ling family to give the betrothal gifts and propose marriage. Your grandfather will also go with you.

This year, your grandfather plans to stay with us for the Spring Festival, so I want to tell you in advance."

Hearing this, Huo Qingyan immediately became interested and asked, "Since Grandpa is coming to our house for the New Year, shouldn't the uncles also come to our house for a reunion dinner?"

Huo Junshan shook his head and denied it. "No, your uncle and his family will come to pay New Year's greetings to your grandfather on the first day of the new year. Tomorrow we will go to the Ling family to pay the betrothal gifts, and then take your future wife to our house to celebrate the New Year."

Huo Qingyan's expression changed slightly when he heard this, and he said with some concern: "Dad, Ling Fei is only seventeen years old this year. You don't want her to sleep in the same room with me tonight, do you?"

Huo Qingyan had just put down the woven bag when Huo Junshan fiercely kicked him on the leg and angrily shouted:

"Don't be such a toad, you want to eat swan meat! We just invited your fiancée to our house to celebrate the New Year, and we didn't plan to let her sleep in the same bed with you.

After all, you two haven't got your marriage certificate yet, so please don't do anything rash! She's still a little girl, so we must be responsible for her!"

Huo Qingyan touched his nose awkwardly, "I thought you wanted a granddaughter and wanted Ling Fei to give birth to one for you as soon as possible."

"I know you like sons, but giving birth to granddaughters is for your brother and sister-in-law. Look how handsome your nephew is. What if you give birth to a charcoal-skinned little girl?"

Huo Qingyan felt that his father was discriminating against him. He was not black, and Ling Fei was not black either. How could he possibly give birth to a dark-skinned daughter?

But Ling Fei is only 1.62 meters tall, a head shorter than him. What should he do if he gives birth to a son as short as her?

"What are you thinking about, little brat? Take out the things inside and put them away."

Huo Junshan patted Huo Qingyan lightly on the back of his head, and Huo Qingyan hurriedly took out the New Year's goods from the big bag one by one.

"Dad, have you prepared the betrothal gifts for tomorrow's visit to the Ling family?"

"The chicken, duck, fish and meat have all been ordered in advance. Your mother and I will pick them up tomorrow morning. Where's the watch you bought for Ling Fei?"

"In the room."

"I think your mother-in-law is a bit partial. I'm afraid she will take the watch you gave to Ling Fei and give it to their eldest daughter."

Huo Qingyan also knew that Ling Fei's parents were a little partial, but he thought Ling Fei was not someone who would suffer a loss, so he should not need to remind her.

"Dad, they don't dare to do that. Chief Ye will also be there."

At this time, Xiao Ya came out of the kitchen wearing an apron, and saw three large dried red fish with attractive colors on the table.

She turned to look at Huo Qingyan who was sitting on the sofa and said softly, "Son, remember to bring one of the big red fish tomorrow morning, and also some dried shrimp and razor clam meat, and send them to Chief Ye."

Huo Qingyan frowned when he heard this and asked, "Mom, if you ask me to send these to the Ye family tomorrow, do I still need to go and pay New Year's greetings to the leader during the New Year?"

Xiao Ya laughed and scolded, "You silly child, what nonsense are you talking about! These are all local specialties that your brother specially sent back from the island. I asked you to give some to Chief Ye just to give him a taste.

After all, he is Ling Fei's maternal grandfather! What you send tomorrow is a local specialty, and what you send during the Chinese New Year is a New Year's gift. You have to distinguish between these."

Hearing this, Huo Qingyan nodded in sudden realization, understanding his mother's good intentions.

"Okay, Mom, I know what to do. So what time do we leave for the Ling family tomorrow?"

Xiao Ya thought for a moment and replied, "We'll be ready to leave around nine o'clock and arrive at the Ling family before half past ten. We'll have just enough chicken, duck, fish and meat for their lunch banquet."

Huo Qingyan replied with a "yes," and then stood up to prepare the seafood he would bring to the Ye family tomorrow. The next morning, Huo Qingyan got up early at daybreak.

Following his mother's instructions, he picked up a bag of dried seafood including big red fish, dried shrimp, and razor clam meat, and went to visit the Ye family first.

After everything was settled, he went home with peace of mind and waited quietly for his grandfather to go to the Ling family to propose marriage.
