Chapter 7: Unfair Division of Property
It seems that the family is really going to split up, so the old brothers and several older cousins of the Han family were all called over. The five Han brothers and their wives were all present, except for Huo Qingqing, and she had no intention of participating.
Unable to sleep due to the noise, Huo Qingqing got up and took her temperature. As expected, she had a fever. She didn't want to take any more medicine and wanted to make herself a bowl of ginger soup, but she didn't dare to go to the kitchen. They invited people to our house to discuss the division of the property, so I had to cook for them. I guess there was a lot of tension between the sisters-in-law in the kitchen.
She wiped the palms of her hands, soles of her feet and armpits with the medical alcohol she had just bought, took half a tablet of Analgin, wrapped herself in the quilt and went back to sleep.
The noise in the north room didn't stop until midnight.
When Han Jianwu came back, Huo Qingqing had already woken up and asked him, "Is it over?"
Han Jianwu didn't turn on the light. He just said "hmm" and turned on the flashlight to check the child. He frowned and said, "Don't you know that he has peed like this?"
Most of the time at night, Han Jianwu was the one who took care of the child. It was really torturous to help him pee and poop and change his diapers.
Huo Qingqing got up and turned on the light, saying, "I felt a little uncomfortable, took some medicine and fell asleep, so I didn't pay attention."
Both kids wet the kang, and the diaper pads were all wet. They kicked off the quilt and rolled outside to sleep. Fortunately, it was a heated kang, otherwise they would have caught a cold.
Han Jianwu had a cold face and pursed his lips the whole time. It was obvious that he was trying his best to endure it. He quickly put on a dry diaper and stuffed the baby into the quilt. He took the wet diaper and roasted it on the brazier outside, ignoring Huo Qingqing the whole time.
Of course Han Jianwu was angry. He was criticized by the entire family tonight.
The elders allowed his brother, sister-in-law, and younger brothers to be present. Han's mother loved to make fun of those who were not careful. She was afraid that others would say that the old couple treated Han Jianwu badly, so she asked Han Jianwu hypocritically, "Won't your wife come and listen?"
Before Han Jianwu could say anything, the fifth wife Liu Chunyan sneered, "A woman who is ready to run away with a wild man at any time doesn't bother to listen to this."
These words successfully drew the fire to Han Jianwu.
First, the most domineering second uncle of the family cursed with a dark face, "The men of the old Han family have lost their face because of you, Han Jianwu. That woman has cheated on you, but you still tolerate her to stay? Is there no one left in the old Han family? Let a woman like her trample on you? She can leave if she wants to, and stay if she wants to? Do you have any backbone as a man?"
Han Jianwu said, "Erda, it's not what you heard. She borrowed a lot of money and food coupons from that educated youth Zhang and Gao, and they couldn't get them back, so she deliberately set up this trap just to collect the debt." He felt a little unconfident by the end.
"Bullshit," Old Man Han cursed, "You are such a fool that you believe her nonsense?"
Mother Han said, "Old Four, if you insist on living with Huo Qingqing, then you can only live in the West Building."
The West Building that Han's mother mentioned is the Han family's current kitchen. It was their earliest old house, and a single-sided adobe house. It was behind the west wing where they live now. It was very low and dilapidated, with small windows and no yard, as the yard was occupied by the west wing.
Han Jianwu said, "Mom, the east and west wing rooms were built with the allowance I saved while in the army and sent to you. Why do you want me to live in that shabby house? Let's put things in perspective. What happened between Huo Qingqing and me is between her and me. What does it have to do with our separation?"
Liu Chunyan interrupted again and said, "Fourth brother, what mother means is that as long as you drive Huo Qingqing away, you don't have to live in the west building!"
Han Jianwu pointed his sharp eyes at Liu Chunyan and said coldly, "Old Wu's family, this is my family affair, what the hell does it have to do with you?"
Liu Chunyan cried out of anger.
Now everyone began to blame and criticize Han Jianwu. Several uncles and cousins advised Han Jianwu to take the opportunity to divorce Huo Qingqing. If she did it the first time, she would do it the second time. Don't listen to her nonsense. Who knows what she and that educated youth Zhang are planning to do to make him a scapegoat?
Uncle San said, "Old Four, you have always been everyone's pride, but how can you be so cowardly for a woman? You looked at so many candidates and chose to marry a weak educated youth. We can understand that you were young and full of energy. You had been a soldier for five years and had seen a lot, so you chose not to like the girls in the village. In addition, you lied to the commune official and said that the girl was your partner, so the marriage had to be concluded. We had no choice but to agree. But you also know that the reason why she was willing to marry you was to protect herself! Gua Wa, wake up! What kind of life have you been living all these years?"
The eldest brother and his wife, who were always good people, said, "What's the difference between the fourth brother marrying a wife and having no wife at all? He has to be both a father and a mother, but in the end, she still abandons him and becomes a cuckold. You can tolerate this, what do you want?"
The second uncle's son sneered and said, "Maybe the women in the city sleep more comfortably!"
Han Jianwu kicked his cousin and said, "Fuck you."
Oh my god, Han Jianwu almost got into a fight with his cousin again, but was stopped by a scolding from Han’s mother.
When the family elders talk about dividing the property, they mainly focus on the big items such as the house, the retirement of the two elderly people, and their affairs after death. Other small items, food, etc. have to be divided among them. It depends on whether the old man can control his sons and daughters-in-law. If not, then in the end they will fight over it, and whoever grabs it will own it. This kind of thing has happened in Hanjiagou before.
The result of the division was: the new courtyard belonged entirely to the eldest family, including the main house and the east wing. When asked why, it was said that the eldest couple had made the greatest contribution to the family. It was they who helped their parents raise their younger siblings and help them get married and have children.
This was something no one had expected, but the old couple of the Han family agreed and the uncles were too lazy to say anything.
Then the second child can only live in the east wing, the third child in the west wing, and the fifth child and the old couple live in a separate house, so naturally the fifth child and his parents live in the north wing.
Han Jianwu's single-sided house in the backyard, he doesn't know whether he is willing to leave it like this.
The division of the family property was too unfair. Logically, there would be quarrels and even fights. But the third brother smashed the second sister-in-law's head, and the couple dared not quarrel anymore. After all, both of their families got a three-room wing. The fourth brother, who felt it was the most unfair, didn't quarrel, so what were they quarreling about?
The eldest sister-in-law is the daughter of Han's mother's elder sister, and she is the eldest son's aunt. Both of them are smiling but soft-hearted. I'm afraid they have already discussed it with Han's mother and father in private. Their two children are grown up, and their son is about to find a wife. They feel more confident to use an entire new yard to find a wife for their son.
The second and third sisters-in-law quarreled over the east wing of the new courtyard, but in the end they both lost to the eldest sister-in-law who did not argue.
Han Jianwu, who always woke up early, couldn't get up. Huo Qingqing thought he was feeling unwell and asked, "Are you feeling unwell?"
Han Jianwu turned his back to her and the baby and said, "We are assigned to the kitchen in the backyard."
Huo Qingqing was a little confused. She thought the worst possible house would be the one she lived in now. No wonder Han Jianwu said last night that they might get the worst house, but he didn't expect it would be the kitchen?
Huo Qingqing said, "It's fine as long as it doesn't leak wind or rain."
