Wang Jianshe arrived home on the 43rd night of his mission. It was nine o'clock in the evening. Wen Nuan had just put the children to sleep and was about to go to sleep when Wang Jianshe came back.
"What's wrong with you?" Wen Nuan looked at Wang Jianshe nervously, who had his arm in a sling.
"It's okay, I just got some skin scratched by a stray bullet," Wang Jianshe said with a relaxed smile, hugging his young wife with one hand.
"Are you really okay? Then why are you still hanging on?" Wen Nuan asked with tears in her eyes, not believing it.
"It's really okay. Okay, you were shot by a bullet, but it's okay now. You just need to rest for a while," Wang Jianshe said helplessly as he looked at his young wife's tearful eyes.
"I knew it, I knew it, you still want to lie to me!" Wen Nuan was both angry and distressed, and finally she had to hit the man's shoulder hard.
"Sister-in-law, is my brother back?" Wang Xiaomei, who was in the guest room, heard the noise and came over.
"Well, your brother is back!" Wen Nuan looked at Wang Jianshe again and asked, "Have you eaten?"
"No, I'm hungry now," Wang Jianshe buried his big head in the warm neck and rubbed it, saying coquettishly.
"Then you look after the kids, I'll go cook!"
Without waiting for Wang Jianshe to answer, Wen Nuan rushed to the kitchen and called Wang Xiaomei to help light the fire.
When Wang Xiaomei went to the woodshed to get firewood, she heard some noise in the yard next door. She went back to the kitchen and said to Wen Nuan, "Sister-in-law, my brother Lei Zi seems to be back too. I heard some noise in their house too."
"Well, Lei Hu came back with me," Wang Jianshe said, standing at the kitchen door.
"Why did you come out? Go back and look after the child!" Wen Nuan, who was busy at work, heard Wang Jianshe's voice and said without turning her head.
"Let me light the fire, and you go in to look after the children," Wang Jianshe said when he saw that Wang Xiaomei had already lit the fire.
"Okay then, I'll go in and look after the child," Wen Nuan looked up at her man and agreed with what he said.
Wang Xiaomei had no objection. She stuffed a few more pieces of firewood under the stove, washed her hands, and went into the house to see the children.
Wang Jianshe sat down next to the stove, looking at the fire and his young wife who was busy working. His heart was filled with happiness, and his body and mind, which had been tense for many days, relaxed.
"Is your mission very dangerous? You are injured. By the way, is Lei Hu okay?"
Wen Nuan simply made a big bowl of noodles, put two poached eggs in it, and watched the man eat voraciously. Fortunately, it was his left hand that was injured, so it didn't affect his use of chopsticks.
"Lei Hu is fine. As for the mission, I can't say anything. But fortunately, we all came back alive. Except for Lin Sanniu who was seriously injured, the others were only slightly injured. We were adjusted in the local military hospital for a week before we came back, so don't worry!"
"Is Sanniu okay?" Wen Nuan knew this little soldier. He was the one who drove to pick them up when they came to the army. Later, he often helped Wang Jianshe chop firewood and occasionally came for meals. He was a warm and cheerful big boy.
"It's okay. The injury is a bit serious, but fortunately it's not a vital part. He has been transferred back to our military hospital. I estimate he will have to stay in bed for ten days to half a month."
"Then I'll make some chicken soup or something and you can give it to him. This kid has suffered a lot this time."
"Okay, wait for me to send it off!"
The couple just sat in the kitchen, one eating, the other watching, and chatting about some ordinary family matters. It was very plain, but happy!
After Wang Jianshe finished his meal, Wen Nuan boiled some water and went to the bathroom to help him take a bath. They were busy until half past ten before returning to the room. Wang Xiaomei was already dozing off on the kang, and the children were also sleeping soundly.
Wen Nuan woke up her younger sister and told her to get up early tomorrow and go to the supply and marketing cooperative to see if there were any chickens, fish or other things for sale. She could buy some to nourish Wang Jianshe and make some soup for Lin Sanniu.
Because Wang Jianshe was injured, Wen Nuan firmly rejected the man's idea of sleeping with her, and instead drove the man to sleep at the end of the kang. She was afraid that she would accidentally touch the man's injured arm.
The man had no choice but to obediently run to the end of the kang and sleep. When he first lay down, he still felt a little aggrieved, but the running around and fatigue of the past few days made him fall asleep quickly.
After the man came back, Wen Nuan finally felt relieved. Although the man came back with injuries, he came back safely after all, so she fell asleep quickly.
The whole cozy courtyard has entered into a sweet dream...
The next day, as soon as it was a little light, Wang Xiaomei got up, queued up early, and bought some nutritious food to nourish her elder brother.
There were no chickens for sale today, but because the weather was warm, some people went to the river to fish. So, Wang Xiaomei grabbed two carps weighing two kilograms and six or seven small crucian carps, and also bought thirty eggs and two kilograms of tofu.
Wen Nuan was very surprised to see what Wang Xiaomei brought back: crucian carp and tofu soup, just right for the injured.
Back home, back to a comfortable and safe environment, Wang Jianshe slept until almost ten o'clock. The children were awake, lying and playing in the yard, watched by Wang Xiaomei.
Wen Nuan was cooking soup in the kitchen. She fried the crucian carp on both sides until golden brown, then added water and boiled it for ten minutes. She then put in the chopped tofu and simmered it slowly. By the time Wang Jianshe got up, the sugar was almost ready. It was white, thick and not fishy. Wang Jianshe drank two large bowls of it in one breath.
Wen Nuan took out another small clay pot. Because there were too many fish bones, she didn't put any fish in it. She put some tofu in it and asked Wang Jianshe to send it to the inpatient department for Lin Sanniu to drink.
Wang Jianshe obediently picked up the earthen jar and left.
After Wang Jianshe left, Wen Nuan added some water to the remaining crucian carp and tofu and started to prepare lunch.
It was obvious that the man had become darker and thinner when he came back this time. Taking advantage of the half-month vacation, Wen Nuan decided to give the man some good nourishment.
So when Wang Jianshe came back, there was a table full of delicious food waiting for him, and the man was smiling as he ate.
After lunch, the whole family took a nap in the house.
Around two o'clock in the afternoon, Lei Hu came and said that they would go to his house for dinner in the evening, and asked my younger sister to go over early to help. Lin Yiman is now more than four months old and almost five months pregnant, but because she is a baby, her belly is not very big, which does not affect her cooking or something.
Wen Nuan and the others were not hesitant and agreed immediately, saying that they would ask Wang Xiaomei to come over and help wash and cut vegetables.
A week later, Wang Jianshe went to remove the splint. The wound had recovered very well and he could go back to work after another week of rest.
Three days later, the army sent a car to the town, and Wen Nuan wanted to take the children with her to take some photos and send them to Wen's father and mother, Wang's father and mother, and Xie Sufang and the others.
Lin Yiman also wanted to go. Lei Hu didn't have anything important to do recently, so he simply took a leave of absence and went with her.
