Chapter 40 Wild Chestnut Tree

The next day, just after dawn, the entire Wawu Village had just woken up from sleep, and Wen Nuan and a few others went up the mountain carrying large backpacks and the dry food they had prepared the night before.

"Ah! It's true that the early bird catches the worm!"

Wen Nuan and her group were very lucky. Not far after passing the outer perimeter, they found a wild walnut tree. The ground was covered with walnuts, so they quickly squatted down to pick them up.

"The skins of these walnuts are almost rotten. We can just rub them and dry them in the sun when we get home!"

"Well, here comes one more snack this winter!"

They quickly picked up all the things that had fallen on the ground, and then went to cut a long branch to knock down all the things that could be reached from the tree. After a while, Xie Sufang and Lin Yiman's backpacks were full.

"Xiaoling, Xiaonuan, Yiman and I will take the walnuts in the basket back first. You guys just walk around nearby, don't go too far, do you hear me?"

"I heard you, Sister Sufang, don't worry!"

Xie Sufang and Lin Yiman went back to deliver the walnuts, while Wen Nuan and Liu Xiaoling wandered around to see if they could find anything else.

"Master, master, I saw a few chestnut trees over there, and there are so many fur balls on them!" Feifei shouted excitedly to Wen Nuan.

"Sister Xiaoling, let's go over there and take a look!" After hearing Feifei's words, Wen Nuan quickly called Liu Xiaoling and told her to go in the direction Feifei pointed.

"Wow, there are so many hairy chestnuts!" Liu Xiaoling jumped and danced excitedly as she looked at the chestnut trees in front of her.

"Yes, there are quite a lot. We two can't pick them all, right?" Even if Xie Sufang and Lin Yiman were added together, they might not be able to pick up all the chestnuts in front of them.

"How about this, Sister Xiaoling," Wen Nuan thought for a moment and felt that she had to call the male educated youths together. "I'll wait here. You go back and call Sister Sufang and the others, and call a few male educated youths as well. Today we will catch all the hairy chestnuts here. Otherwise, we won't know if there will be any next time we come!"

"Hey, can you stay here by yourself?"

"Okay, of course I can. After all, I've lived here for four years. How can I get lost?"

"Then don't run around, just wait here, we'll be back soon!"

"Well, I won't run around, go back and call them!"

"Okay, don't run around!"

"Yeah, don't run around!"

Liu Xiaoling put down the backpack and ran back the way she came.

Wen Nuan looked around. This place was relatively low-lying and there were many big trees nearby, so these few fish that slipped through the net were visible to them. Wen Nuan squatted down and filled her and Liu Xiaoling's backpacks with the fish, then sat aside and waited quietly for Liu Xiaoling and the others to come over.

"Master, I saw a pheasant nest not far over there. There were two pheasants and eight pheasant eggs in it!" Feifei, who had gone out for a walk, flew back and said.

"Is it far?" Wen Nuan was very interested when she heard it, but she was afraid that if she left, Liu Xiaoling and the others would not be able to find her.

"Very close, only about 500 to 600 meters away, we'll be back in about ten minutes!"

Wen Nuan secretly calculated that she should be able to return before Liu Xiaoling and the others arrived, "Okay, let's go catch pheasants!"

It was indeed very close, and Wen Nuan easily destroyed the pheasant's nest and picked up all the pheasant eggs. Then she returned to the chestnut tree, but Liu Xiaoling and the others had not arrived yet.

Wen Nuan found a thicker branch and prepared to knock down all the chestnuts on the tree. Just as she finished knocking down one tree, Liu Xiaoling and her group arrived. Except for a few people from the small theater, everyone else came.

"You all are here!"

"Xiaoling said there were a lot of chestnuts, so we all came together!"

"Wow, Wen Zhiqing, you are so lucky, there are so many hairy chestnuts!" Everyone was excited to see so many chestnuts!

"Let's pick it up quickly, before anyone else comes!" Zhang Hongliang said steadily.

In Wawu Village, if you go up the mountain to pick up mountain products but don't put them in your own backpack, then the products cannot be considered yours. The elderly people at the educated youth site all understood this rule, so they didn't say anything and just lowered their heads to pick up the chestnuts.

Zhang Hongliang and Wang Hongjun took the stick from Wen Nuan's hand and knocked the chestnuts on the tree.

They had been picking up the trash for almost an hour and had just picked up more than half of it. It was already around 9 o'clock in the morning. Wen Nuan and her friends went out early in the morning and had breakfast early, and the male educated youth were called over before they had time to have breakfast, so everyone was a little hungry now!

Wen Nuan wanted to roast the two pheasants and their eggs, but there wasn't enough for nine people.

"Sister Sufang, you guys pick them up here first. I'll go see if I can catch a pheasant or rabbit nearby. We'll roast and eat them when we come back, okay?" Wen Nuan pulled Xie Sufang's arm.

"It's too dangerous for you to go alone, how about I go with you?" Xie Sufang was worried about leaving Wen Nuan alone.

"Oh, it's okay, Sister Sufang. I've been running in this mountain for more than four years. Nothing will happen to me, don't worry!"

"Okay then, be careful and don't go too far. If anything happens, just shout loudly," Xie Sufang reminded him worriedly.

"Don't worry!"

"Comrades, you guys keep working. I'm going to go walk around and see if I can pick up a few more pheasant eggs. We'll come back and roast the pheasant and eggs and eat them!"

"Okay!"

"Ohhh, roast pheasant!"

Zhang Hongliang wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked at Wen Nuan, "Wen Zhiqing, is it okay to be alone?"

"Okay, don't worry!" Wen Nuan waved her hand and walked away.

When Wen Nuan said she would pick up a few more pheasant eggs, everyone in the educated youth camp believed her because they had great faith in her good luck. The pheasants and rabbits they had eaten in the past few months were all picked up by Wen Nuan. There were even a few times when they followed and watched the pheasants or rabbits hit the trees on their own. No one told anyone about this, and even the people in the small theater just thought that they were caught by a few male educated youth.

However, they did not let Wen Nuan go up the mountain frequently just because of her good luck. Instead, Xie Sufang would sometimes persuade Wen Nuan. Although feudal superstition is prohibited now, everyone still has some concerns in their hearts. They are also afraid that this good luck is obtained by consuming Wen Nuan's luck, so they only let Wen Nuan pick up a pheasant or a rabbit once or twice a month to satisfy everyone's cravings.

Xie Sufang had mentioned all these things to Wen Nuan in a vague way. Although Wen Nuan was touched, she didn't say much. After all, she understood the principle that an innocent man is guilty of possessing a treasure.

So, Wen Nuan just agreed with everyone's idea and only brought back a chicken or a rabbit occasionally.

Having left the warmth of the main group, Feifei was looking for pheasants or rabbits.

"Master, there are wild goats 600 meters southeast of you!"

"What?!" Wen Nuan looked at Fei Fei as if she didn't hear clearly, "What did you just say?"

"I said there are wild goats!" Feifei rolled her eyes to the sky, flew to Wen Nuan and shouted loudly.

"Oh, I heard it, I heard it, you made me deaf!" Wen Nuan glanced at Fei Fei and scratched her ears, "Why don't you lead the way quickly!"

"Hmph! Let's go!"

They all walked towards the wild goats arguing with each other.
