Chapter 72: Departure with the Army

Because they had to set off the next morning, Wang Jianshe did not touch Wen Nuan that night. Instead, he held her tightly in his arms and fell asleep quietly together.

Before going to bed, Wen Nuan went over everything again. Uncle Guo had sent them some more food, enough for them to eat until the autumn harvest, and he would send them things later when it was convenient. Wen's parents had also written to her half a month ago to inform them of everything and asked them not to send letters here and to notify them after she was settled in the army. The educated youth point had also said goodbye properly tonight, so there shouldn't be anything else to do.

After finishing her strokes, Wen Nuan thought that there was nothing she had forgotten, so she closed her eyes which had been closed for a long time and fell into a sweet dream.

The next day, before dawn, Aunt Yang got up to prepare dry food for her son and daughter-in-law on the road. She boiled 10 eggs, baked 20 egg pancakes, steamed 10 steamed buns made with 20g of flour the previous night, packed a large bottle of chili sauce that her son loved, and a large bottle of pickled vegetables...

Wang Jianshe also got up early, pressed the corner of the quilt for Wen Nuan who was still sleeping, and went to the kitchen, "Mom, we will only be on the road for two days, there is no need to prepare so much dry food."

"It's okay to bring more. The food on the train is expensive and not tasty. The weather is neither too cold nor too hot now, so the food won't go bad in two days. If there are any left, you can eat them when you get to the army!" Aunt Yang said without raising her head.

"Mom, you and Dad should make sure to get more rest at home and don't overwork yourself. I will send 20 yuan home every month, which is enough for you to eat and drink. There is no need to work so hard for a few work points!" Wang Jianshe said these words last night, but he knew that his parents would not listen, but he still wanted to repeat them.

"You don't need that much. Ten yuan a month will be enough. After you get married, you will have to support a family and raise children. You can keep the money for yourselves. Don't worry about your family. Your father and I are still young and can earn work points for a few more years!" Aunt Yang felt very touched when she heard her son's caring words, but she also missed her son, so she directly rejected her son's kindness.

"Xiao Nuan, she's a good girl. You have to treat her well and don't bully her. It's not easy to be a military wife. She's still young. You should take more responsibility. If you get pregnant, send a telegram home and I'll take care of Xiao Nuan and help her during the confinement period!"

"Hey, Mom, I know!"

Wang Jianshe lowered his head and lit the fire, while Aunt Yang chattered while busy with her work, but this happiness and warmth made this ordinary morning full of bliss!

After breakfast in the morning, Wang's father was waiting outside the door with a ox cart borrowed from the village. Wang Jianshe moved all the things he wanted to take away onto the cart, then took Wen Nuan to say goodbye to his mother and sister.

"Son, I still say the same thing as before. No matter what you do, think about your parents at home. Now you have a wife and will have children in the future. You must think more about your relatives and come back safely..." Aunt Yang looked at her tall and strong son who was about to leave her again, and she couldn't hold back the tears in her eyes. Every time she sent her child away, she was worried that he would never come back, but that was what the child wanted, so she could only support him and hope that her child was safe!

Seeing his mother crying, Wang Jianshe felt very sad. Tears welled up in the eyes of a tall and strong man. He knelt outside the door and kowtowed three times to his mother. Wen Nuan also knelt down and kowtowed, "Mom, it's my fault that I can't show my filial piety to you two. I hope you can take good care of yourselves!"

"Hey, we will take good care of ourselves!" Wang Fugui and Yang Chunhua hurried forward to pull their son and daughter-in-law up. Wang Xiaomei had already burst into tears, "Brother..."

"Little sister, take care of yourself and your parents!" Wang Jianshe rubbed Wang Xiaomei's head and pulled his tearful wife onto the ox cart.

Aunt Yang watched her son and daughter-in-law get on the ox cart, then turned around and went back into the house. Every time her son left, she would not look at his back...

When they reached the entrance of the village, everyone at the educated youth center was waiting there. Xie Sufang handed Wen Nuan a small package containing the dry food they had prepared early in the morning. "Xiao Nuan, remember to write to me!"

"Sister..." Wen Nuan was overwhelmed by the atmosphere of parting and couldn't say anything even if she had thousands of words to say.

"Let's go," Xie Sufang finally patted Wen Nuan's shoulder and waved goodbye.

The ox cart slowly moved forward. Wen Nuan looked at the figures and the village getting farther and farther away. Although she had been here for less than a year, she had received much more warmth than in her previous life. She would never forget the sisters who treated her sincerely, and she would never forget these years...

Because of the separation, Wen Nuan looked depressed, and Wang Jianshe felt bad too, but he had to be careful about the impact outside, so he could only hold his young wife's hand tightly, letting her feel his presence and that he was with her!

Wen Nuan did feel the comfort from the man. She smiled at him tenderly. Although the separation was sad, a happy life was waiting for her in the future. Her heart was filled with hope again...

The train was at 11 o'clock, and when they arrived at the train station, it was almost time. Wang Jianshe asked someone to buy hard sleeper tickets for them. Wang's father helped his son and daughter-in-law squeeze through the crowd to get to their carriage, put their belongings away, and prepared to get off the train.

"Dad, go slowly when you go back, don't be in a hurry, pay more attention to rest when you work, and take good care of my mother and yourself!"

"Well, Dad knows, you take care of yourself!" Wang Fugui stood on tiptoe and patted his son's broad shoulders, his tone full of reluctance, but there was no time left, so he could only get off the car quickly.

Wang Jianshe leaned half of his body out of the window and waved goodbye to his father.

This separation made Wen Nuan understand the man a little deeper. Although he was a tough guy, he was still gentle and delicate towards his family. She was more confident about her future happy life!

There was a lower bunk and a middle bunk on the bed. Wang Jianshe considerately took out a sheet and spread it on the middle bunk for Wen Nuan to rest. Wen Nuan shook her head. She had slept well last night and was not sleepy now. There were only two of them in the carriage at the moment, so Wen Nuan stayed on the lower bunk.

It was noon when they got in the car. The two took out the food prepared by Wang Mu. Wen Nuan was full after eating a boiled egg and an omelet. Wang Jianshe was reluctant to eat the eggs and omelets, so he ate two steamed buns with chili sauce, and then ate two omelet pancakes at Wen Nuan's strong request.

After dinner, Wang Jianshe went to get some water. He found out that it would take several hours to reach the next stop. He estimated that no one would get on this carriage for a while, so he closed the door and let Wen Nuan go to the middle bunk to rest. He also stayed in the lower bunk for a while.

The train ride was very boring. Wang Jianshe's troops were in Z County, G Province, and it took two days and two nights to get there by train. Fortunately, there were no other people in their carriage, so the two of them felt much more at ease and felt much better for a while.
