Wen Nuan had just taken two mouthfuls of porridge when she saw the egg buried underneath. She ate it without saying a word.
After eating, she felt better with food in her stomach. She washed the bowl and asked, "Sister Yiman, is there anything I can do for you?"
"Please help me pick some onions," Lin Yiman was busy boiling the rice, so she didn't bother to be polite to Wen Nuan.
Wen Nuan responded and went to the small vegetable garden in the yard to pick onions.
There are now four men and four women in the educated youth site. The female educated youth are responsible for cooking, while the male educated youth are responsible for fetching water and chopping firewood.
It was Lin Yiman's turn to cook today, so she came back half an hour early.
Wen Nuan plucked a few shallots, washed them and brought them into the kitchen, where she saw Lin Yiman peeling potatoes. "Sister Yiman, do you want shredded potatoes today?"
"Well, let's make some shredded potatoes today!"
"Great! Sister Yiman's fried shredded potatoes are the best!"
What Wen Nuan said was true. Among the four female educated youth who cooked in the educated youth camp, Wen Nuan and Liu Xiaoling were only able to cook cooked dishes, and the eldest sister Xie Sufen could only stew dishes, and a variety of them at that. Only Lin Yiman was good at stir-frying dishes that were colorful, fragrant and delicious. So whenever Lin Yiman cooked, everyone tacitly asked her to cook more to improve their poor lives a little.
"Sister Yiman, what are we having for lunch?" Wen Nuan approached Lin Yiman who was cutting potatoes and asked obediently.
"I still have the steamed buns from yesterday. How about some spicy stir-fried potato shreds and some wild vegetable soup?"
“That’s great!”
The food was really good. Many families in the village could hardly even afford steamed buns made of three-grain flour.
Wen Nuan went to the countryside in Northeast China. The village she stayed in was called Wawu Village, which belonged to the Dongfeng Brigade of Hongqi Commune and mainly produced corn, soybeans and wheat.
Winter wheat is planted here, and it will be harvested in a few days.
Therefore, the main ingredients here are cornmeal, wheat flour, and bean flour.
Except for a few solid meals of steamed buns during wheat harvest and autumn harvest, the villagers mainly eat cornmeal porridge and corn grits porridge at other times.
After all, the educated youth in the youth centers were not native rural people. Moreover, they were all young men and women in their twenties, 17 or 18 years old. Therefore, they could not just drink corn paste or eat corn grits porridge like the villagers. Therefore, they could only eat steamed buns every two or three days, and most of them were black steamed buns made of three-grain flour.
Just as Lin Yiman was preparing to stir-fry shredded potatoes, the courtyard gate was opened and all the educated youth came back.
As soon as Xie Sufen entered the room, she saw Wen Nuan standing at the kitchen door and asked softly, "Xiao Nuan, how do you feel? Are you feeling unwell? Do you need me to accompany you to the clinic?"
Wen Nuan looked at Xie Sufen, who looked exhausted, and felt comforted. She replied obediently, "Sister Sufen, I'm fine. I feel much better. I don't need to go to the clinic."
After washing her hands, Xie Sufen came to Wen Nuan and took a closer look at her face. She found that she looked much better, so she said softly, "You suffered so much yesterday. You should rest more. Go back and sleep for a while after dinner. The village chief has given you two days off. Take advantage of these two days to have a good rest. The wheat harvest will start in a few days. Don't be too exhausted by then."
Listening to Xie Sufen's careful and thoughtful words, Wen Nuan felt as comfortable as drinking a cup of hot water!
"I know, Sister Sufen, I will definitely have a good rest and try to get my body in good shape so that I can prepare for the wheat harvest in a few days!"
"Well, let's get ready for dinner!" Xie Sufen looked at Wen Nuan's high-spirited appearance with satisfaction, and felt that the little girl had never been so full of energy as she was now.
"Xiao Nuan, are you okay?" Wen Nuan was setting the table when Liu Xiaoling's weak voice rang out.
"Xiaoling, what's wrong with you? Why do you look so listless?" Wen Nuan asked Liu Xiaoling with concern, looking at her pale face.
"I'm fine, just tired..." Liu Xiaoling waved her hands, sat down weakly and lay on the table.
"Xiaoling, why don't you take a leave for the afternoon? Can you do this in the afternoon?" Lin Yiman put down the food in her hand and looked at Liu Xiaoling worriedly.
"Sister Yiman, I'm fine. I'll be fine after eating and taking a nap. I'm sure I can hold on through the afternoon..." Liu Xiaoling said dejectedly.
"Liu Xiaoling, this is not good. You have been in the countryside for a year, and you are still so lifeless when doing farm work."
Just then, a shrill male voice sounded.
"Yang Zhijun, what does this have to do with you?" Liu Xiaoling suddenly sat up straight and asked.
Following Liu Xiaoling's line of sight, Wen Nuan saw the male educated youth who had just spoken, a short, dark and thin man.
"I'm just concerned about you. If you really can't stand the hardship of working in the fields, just find a man to marry. Women should rely on men, right?"
"Yang Zhijun, you!" Liu Xiaoling was so angry that she couldn't speak. She turned around and shouted at Xie Sufen aggrievedly, "Sister Sufen, look at him!"
Xie Sufen put the bowl in her hand on the table with a bang, "Yang Zhijun, the task this morning was not too light, right? Otherwise, how could you still have the energy to say such nonsense!"
"Xie Zhiqing, I..." Yang Zhijun wanted to say something unconvinced.
"Okay, let's eat!" At this time, a loud voice rang out, "Yang Zhijun, if you don't know what to say, just shut your mouth!"
Wen Nuan looked in the direction of the voice and recognized it as Zhang Hongliang, the eldest brother of the male educated youth.
"Okay, let's stop talking and eat quickly. After eating, take some time to rest because we still have to go to work in the afternoon," said Zhang Hongliang, then he picked up the steamed bun and started eating it in big mouthfuls.
