Chapter 39 Conditions
Wen Eryu bit her lower lip, not daring to look up at him, but just struggled in vain with her hands that were restrained by him.
The hustle and bustle of the banquet hall was isolated by an invisible barrier, leaving only this dimly lit corridor.
Shen Jize's tall figure completely enveloped her. At such a close distance, she looked so frail, as if she could be easily crushed by him.
She had nowhere to escape.
“Let…let me go.”
Wen Eryu thought Shen Jize would cling to her tightly, but the next second, the man let go of her hand.
Shen Jize took a few steps back, leaving her enough space.
But he saw a hint of doubt on her face.
Shen Jize said in a muffled voice: "Why, you are not used to me like this?"
Wen Eryu: “…”
She wanted to turn around and leave, but as soon as she took a step, she remembered the purpose of coming to the dinner.
Wen Eryu retracted the foot he had taken.
She showed a standard smile: "Mr. Shen, long time no see."
Shen Jize put one hand in his pocket and looked her up and down several times, finally stopping his gaze on the scar on her forehead that was covered by foundation.
His eyes darkened and he looked away silently.
Wen Eryu felt a little embarrassed when she saw that he didn't respond. After a long ideological struggle, she closed her eyes and showed an expression of resignation.
“…I came here specifically to see you.”
Hearing this, Shen Jize's body trembled imperceptibly.
But soon, he sneered and took a half step forward: "Oh? Is it business or...personal?"
Shen Ji Ze paused deliberately and emphasized the pronunciation of the last two words.
Wen Eryu felt a little embarrassed. After all, she had divorced Shen Jize, and they had a very unpleasant quarrel at the beginning.
The air seemed to freeze, and the corridor was so quiet that one could clearly hear the conversations in the banquet hall.
At this moment, Chen De suddenly came over.
The moment he saw Wen Eryu, his pace slowed down a lot and he subconsciously looked at his boss.
Judging from Chen Jize's expression, it seemed that the two of them got along well, at least they didn't quarrel as soon as they met.
Chen De breathed a sigh of relief.
"Boss, Mr. Li from Jintai Pharmaceutical is looking for you."
Shen Jize glanced at his watch: "Well, let's go."
He stopped halfway, turned his back to Wen Eryu and said, "Come to the company to see me tomorrow morning at nine o'clock. I won't wait for you after that time."
*
When Wen Eryu returned to the banquet hall, Wei Yan was looking for her.
"Where did you go?" he asked.
Wen Eryu replied: "The dress was stained, I went to the bathroom to wipe it."
Wei Yan nodded and said, "Boss Shen is over there, let's go over and talk to him now."
But just as he finished speaking, Shen Jize left the banquet hall under everyone's gaze.
Wei Yan patted his head, his face full of regret, and kept muttering, "Why did you leave?"
Then he turned to Wen Eryu and said, "It's okay, we'll go to his company next time."
"Manager Wei." Wen Eryu called him.
"What's wrong?"
Wen Eryu said awkwardly, "Why don't you find someone else? I'll pay you back for the dress."
Wei Yan was puzzled: "The money issue is a small problem, do you have anything else to worry about?"
"That's not the case, it's just..." Wen Eryu hesitated to speak. She couldn't tell him that Shen Jize was her ex-husband.
Wei Yan interrupted her: "That's good, hey, as long as you convince Mr. Shen, everything will be fine for promotion and salary increase."
Having said that, Wen Eryu couldn't refuse anymore.
*
The next day, Wen Eryu arrived downstairs of Shen Jize's company on time.
Wei Yan had something urgent to do and had to go on a business trip to another province, so he didn't come with her.
Before Wen Eryu could speak, the receptionist came out and greeted her with a smile.
“Miss Wen, Mr. Shen has already told us, please follow me.”
"Thank you." Wen Eryu replied politely.
In a moment, she arrived in Shen Jize's office.
The air conditioning was on high inside, and the front desk made her a cup of coffee.
"Mr. Shen is still in a meeting. Please wait here for a moment."
Wen Eryu nodded. She sat on the large black leather sofa, her body straight like a fully drawn bow.
Today she wore a slightly formal work suit, her long hair was neatly tied behind her head, and she had light makeup on her face, but it still couldn't hide the trace of fatigue deep in her eyes.
She folded her hands on her knees, her fingertips cold and clasped together with a slight force.
Are you nervous? I think I am a little bit.
She took a sip of coffee, trying to ease the tension.
Ten minutes later, the wooden door of the office was pushed open and Shen Jize walked in.
He walked with a steady pace. Although he was over thirty, time seemed to be particularly kind to him. His angular face looked even deeper and colder against the backdrop of the gray sky outside the window.
Shen Jize walked straight to the desk, seemingly not noticing the person on the sofa.
After he sat down, he slowly raised his eyes.
Wen Eryu's heartbeat accelerated uncontrollably, and her throat felt dry. She forced herself to meet his gaze, trying to make her voice sound steady and without any personal emotion.
“Mr. Shen, thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule.”
Shen Jize didn't respond immediately, his gaze lingered on her for a few seconds.
These few seconds of silence were stretched infinitely in the empty office, like a silent torture.
Finally, he opened his thin lips slightly, and his voice was low and steady. It was impossible to tell whether he was happy or angry, but it carried the natural aloofness of a superior.
"It seems that Miss Wen came to see me today for business."
Wen Eryu did not respond to him, but took out a thick folder from the bag beside her. Her movements were quick, but there was a slight tremor in her fingertips.
She stood up, walked over to the desk, and gently pushed the folder in front of him.
"This is a detailed plan and quotation for the material supply for the 'Nanwan Project', as well as our technology company's qualifications and past success stories." She stated it clearly, but she was unsure.
Shen Jize didn't touch the document.
He leaned back slightly in the leather chair, his hands casually folded in front of him. His posture was relaxed, yet there was an invisible sense of oppression.
Shen Jize's eyes were still fixed on Wen Eryu's face. To him, the document was not important at all. What was important was his ex-wife in front of him.
"I remember." He paused, as if trying to capture every subtle change in her expression. "When we divorced, you said you would no longer have anything to do with the Shen Group, or with me personally."
His voice was not loud, but every word clearly struck Wen Eryu's heart, carrying a cold reminder.
Wen Eryu's fingertips dug deep into his palm, using the pain to maintain his clarity and apparent calmness.
"I believe that Shen's criteria for selecting suppliers are professional capabilities, product quality, and cost-effectiveness, rather than... personal relationships with partners."
Shen Jize looked at her forced calmness and the stubbornness in her eyes, and his gaze deepened.
Suddenly he leaned forward, and his slender fingers casually turned the first page of the folder. His eyes swept over the densely packed text, but he obviously didn't really read it.
"That's right." His fingertips unconsciously traced a line across the smooth paper. "So, Miss Wen, what do you think is the reason why your company was able to convince Shen's to take on this huge project in Nanwan?"
His questions went straight to the point, which is how negotiations should be.
Wen Eryu took a deep breath, suppressed the complex emotions surging in his heart, and began to explain the advantages of the plan in a clear and orderly manner.
As she concluded her statement, silence fell again in the office.
Shen Ji Ze closed the folder without giving any comment.
He stood up, walked around the large desk, and walked towards Wen Eryu step by step.
As he approached, the clear and powerful aura that belonged only to him came again, bringing with it a huge sense of oppression.
Wen Eryu didn't dare to look up, but just subconsciously stepped back.
"I'll consider the project." Shen Jize changed the subject, "But—"
When Wen Eryu heard the last two words, his heart rose to his throat.
However, Shen Jize did not continue speaking immediately. His eyes slowly moved downwards and he suddenly raised his hand.
Wen Eryu's heart stopped beating, wondering what he was going to do.
But that slender hand reached out with a clear purpose towards the half-drunk coffee she placed on the table.
Under Wen Eryu's astonished gaze, Shen Jize lowered his eyes, then brought the rim of the cup to his lips and took a shallow sip.
The movements were so smooth as if they had been rehearsed a thousand times.
The bitter aroma of coffee filled the air between the two of them.
He put down the cup, and the bottom of the cup made a crisp sound when it touched the table.
Shen Jize raised his eyes to look at her again, his deep eyes surging with undercurrents that she couldn't understand, and the corners of his lips seemed to be raised in an extremely imperceptible arc.
"You have to promise me one thing."
Wen Eryu swallowed and asked, "...what's the matter?"
Shen Jize: "Stay with me for a day."
Wen Eryu refused: "No."
"Are you sure?" He sneered, "I don't need to consider the project then."
Wen Eryu: “…”
Despicable! Shameless! Evil capitalists.
