Chapter 37: How did we meet?
"Tsk~"
Little Sangzhu curled his lips, lowered his head and started fiddling with the toy in his hand again.
The conversation came to an abrupt end.
Song Lehan was surprised that Xu Jiangcuo could speak for her. She looked up at him with a grateful look.
Xu Jiangcuo on the opposite side scratched his head uncomfortably and lowered his head to play with his mobile phone.
Song Lehan had not been at Sangzhu's house for a while when Zhu Yue sent her a message, asking her to come to the village branch as soon as possible.
They said they were discussing accommodation issues.
"I have something else to do, so I won't bother you anymore." Song Lehan stood up and prepared to leave.
Sangzhu's mother tugged at Xu Jiangcuo and said, "Okay, come back when you have time. Let Dajiang take you wherever you want to go."
"Ah..." Song Lehan glanced at Xu Jiangcuo, "No need to bother."
"It's not a bother, it's not a bother." Sang Zhu's mother didn't even ask Xu Jiangcuo a question and pushed him out. "Dajiang, be careful what you say. If you dare to bully Teacher Song, I'll be the first to beat you up!"
"Aunt, am I that bad?!" Xu Jiangcuo was at a loss whether to laugh or cry. He turned around and motioned Song Lehan to go first.
The two left one after the other.
Looking at the backs of the two, little Sangzhu tugged at the corner of her mother's clothes, looked up and asked, "Mom, I want Sister Lele to stay here all the time. I want to play with Sister Lele."
"Don't think about it, unless you are a man—" Sang Zhu's mother paused and waved her hand, "Forget it, even if you are a man, you can't marry her."
Little Sangzhu's mind raced, his eyes darting around as he asked, "Will marrying Sister Lele allow her to stay here?"
"That's hard to say." Sang Zhu's mother seemed to be talking to herself, "If Teacher Song had a softer temper, she might really listen to the man. But unfortunately..."
Sang Zhu's mother shook her head, then came to her senses and said, "Why would I tell you this, a child?"
She scratched Xiao Sangzhu's head and said in a long voice, "Why do you insist on me staying here? Don't you have your brother Dajiang to play with you now?!"
When little Sangzhu heard Xu Jiangcuo's name, her big, watery eyes suddenly widened.
——
"This way."
At the fork in the road, Xu Jiangcuo reminded.
Song Lehan had been to the village several times before and was quite familiar with it. She was a little skeptical of Xu Jiangcuo's reminder.
"I'm going to the village party committee," she repeated.
Xu Jiangcuo nodded and said, "Yes, the village party committee is this way."
"No, that's not it." Song Lehan frowned doubtfully, "Why do I remember it was this way?"
As she spoke, she pointed to the other road.
Xu Jiangcuo put his hands on his hips and chuckled, "I've lived here for more than ten years, so I'm sure I'm more familiar with it than you."
Song Lehan still stood on the path he believed in, unmoved.
"No, why don't you believe what I said?" Xu Jiangcuo didn't quite understand. "How could I really lie to you? My aunt said that to me, I..."
At the end of the conversation, he was speechless.
"But you have lost your memory." Song Lehan reminded at the right time.
Xu Jiangcuo was stunned, and the expression on his face changed from confusion to bewilderment.
Song Lehan lowered his eyes slightly, pursed his lips, and explained, "Last year, the village was renovated and the village branch moved here. You just came back, so you probably don't know about this yet."
"Oh, sorry." Xu Jiangcuo's face suddenly became serious. "Then let's go. As you said."
Song Lehan took a step forward, observing Xu Jiangcuo. After thinking for a moment, he asked, "Have you lost all your memories since you turned 18?"
"Yeah. I just remember that I was going to college and I was very happy. I don't remember anything else."
Song Lehan lowered his eyes and asked tentatively: "So, you have no impression of me at all?"
"Um."
Xu Jiangcuo nodded in response, was silent for a second, and then asked her, "Are we classmates in college?"
"I guess...right?" Song Lehan wasn't sure.
"In the same major?"
"No." Song Lehan answered very straightforwardly this time.
Xu Jiangcuo was curious, "Then how did we meet?"
Song Lehan looked away, bit her lower lip, and wondered how to answer.
As soon as he learned that Xu Jiangcuo had lost his memory, Song Lehan was actually more happy than sad.
She felt that she owed him, but due to her status, she could not make direct compensation, so the guilt grew and lingered in her heart for a long time.
And God suddenly gave her an opportunity.
Xu Jiangcuo doesn't remember her.
I don't remember the grudges between the two of them.
Song Lehan thought, why not take advantage of now, while he has no memory of her at all, to silently and quietly make up for the harm she had done to him.
To settle her long-accumulated debt.
Song Lehan came back to his senses and looked at Xu Jiangcuo calmly.
"It was probably because of an event. I don't remember exactly, but we became friends after that."
Xu Jiangcuo remained calm, but doubts arose in his heart.
Was it so easy for him to make friends in college?
Xu Jiangcuo understands his own personality and what kind of person he is. If they were not in the same class and major, he would not have made "accidental" friends at all.
He is not proactive, outgoing, or interested in socializing.
"What was I like in college?" Xu Jiangcuo asked again, with some curiosity.
"Well... I'm not very familiar with you." Song Lehan said this deliberately, "Anyway, I feel like you're a nice person."
"Specifically?" he asked.
It was this sentence that immediately put the unsuspecting Song Lehan on alert.
Xu Jiangcuo usually wouldn't be so curious unless he was suspicious.
He didn't believe what he said now.
Or maybe he didn't believe they were friends they met in college.
In just a second, Song Lehan broke out in a cold sweat on his back and his fingertips also became cold.
"I really can't remember."
This excuse is the best.
Anyway, Xu Jiangcuo had forgotten about it.
"All right."
Xu Jiangcuo let her go.
The two chatted for a while and soon arrived at the village branch.
"Then you go in, I'll leave first."
The task assigned to him had been completed, and Xu Jiangcuo had no interest in following in and listening to words that had nothing to do with him.
"Hey——" Song Lehan called him, but when he turned around, he didn't know what to say to keep him.
"What's wrong?"
"That's right," Song Lehan clenched his fingertips and stopped talking awkwardly.
The two just stared at each other silently.
Until the village chief ran out of the house and broke the silence.
"Oh! Teacher Song!" The village chief's eyes smiled when he saw Song Lehan.
This is the village’s reliable money bag, so we have to treat them well!
"I was just saying this. I thought you couldn't find your place, so I wanted to go look for you!" The village chief said this with a smile. Seeing Xu Jiangcuo still there, he was delighted. "It's just right that Dajiang is here too. It saves me from having to make another trip."
Xu Jiangcuo pointed at himself and asked with his head tilted, "Is there anything else I can do?"
"right!"
The village chief took the two into the house and kindly poured a cup of tea for Song Lehan.
"Well, isn't Teacher Song here to teach in our village? We have to arrange a place for him to stay."
"I figured Dajiang lived alone in that house, so the other rooms were just sitting there unused anyway."
"Why not let Teacher Song and her assistant live there? It's close to the school."
