Chen Mian was carrying a bowl of oden and walking back to the dormitory while eating. He saw Xu Yanfeng sitting at the desk like a giant Buddha, his whole body motionless, his eyes wide open.
"Why are you still here?"
Xu Yanfeng's fingers hovered above the keyboard. He turned his head and glanced at him, a very casual look: "Where else should I be?"
Chen Mian pointed the bamboo stick in his hand toward the door. A piece of white radish was poked on the stick and accidentally fell to the ground with a "plop". Chen Mian's mouth twitched, and he lowered his head, looking at the white radish on the ground with regretful eyes.
The white radish was cooked until it was almost transparent, and it was soft and had absorbed all the broth from the oden. He hadn't even taken a single bite before it was sacrificed.
Chen Mian mourned for a second, then raised his head and spoke to Xu Yanfeng about business: "Don't you know that Xia Xi is waiting in the South Square to confess her love to you?"
While having dinner in the cafeteria, Chen Mian’s Tieba account named “cmbay11” received a private message from Xia Xi.
Xia Xi: "Excuse me, kind senior, the private information you provided me about Xu Yanfeng was 100% true. I assume you have a good relationship with him, right?"
Chen Mian didn't dare reveal his identity for the same reason - he was worried that one day Xu Yanfeng would find out that he had betrayed him behind his back, and he would definitely be in trouble.
He told Xia Xi that he and Xu Yanfeng lived in the same dormitory building, so he knew a little more about him than others.
This didn't count as cheating on Xia Xi, as they were in the same dormitory and in the same building.
Xia Xi: "Great! I just need your help with something. Could you please pass a message to Xu Yanfeng? Tell him I'll be waiting for him at the South Square of the school tonight. I have something to tell him, and he must come."
Thanks to the intelligence Fang Huaiyuan had brought back a few days ago, Chen Mian already knew that Xia Xi had come to Xu Yanfeng tonight to confess her love to him. He had also sounded out Xu Yanfeng's reaction, but Xu Yanfeng was not prepared to accept her confession.
He was even not sure whether Xu Yanfeng would go to see Xia Xi.
Chen Mian couldn't bear it, so he tactfully replied to Xia Xi, "What if Xu Yanfeng doesn't come?"
Xia Xi was very optimistic: "Just help me tell him the message. It's his freedom to come or not."
cmbay11: “…Alright.”
Chen Mian routinely gave her four words - good luck.
Putting down his phone, Chen Mian mentally composed his words. Without revealing himself, he conveyed Xia Xi's intentions to Xu Yanfeng: "You should know that Xia Xi will confess to you today, right? I just saw someone in the group chat say that she's waiting for you at the South Square. Judging from her attitude, she won't leave unless you go. Do you want to go and take a look?"
Xu Yanfeng didn't respond to his words. He put his chopsticks on the side of the plate, picked up the soup in the small bowl, and took two sips.
"Xu Yanfeng, did you hear me?" Chen Mian was a little anxious. He was worried for Xia Xi. People loved to join in the fun at this kind of thing. If Xu Yanfeng really didn't go, she would be so embarrassed. "If you didn't hear me, I'll say it again."
Xu Yanfeng finally spoke impatiently: "Are you very concerned about this matter?"
Chen Mian was choked: "No, I just..."
"Then shut up and eat."
Chen Mian fell silent and buried his head in his meal. He had bought teriyaki chicken leg rice tonight. The chef, perhaps in a bad mood or with shaking hands, had added a lot of salt, and he couldn't swallow it after just a few bites.
He poked the rice with his chopsticks and secretly glanced at Xu Yanfeng opposite him.
Xu Yanfeng must have practiced facial management skills and reached a level of perfection. His expression is flawless, and it is harder than climbing to the sky to peek into his emotions from his face.
Chen Mian sighed softly and couldn't help feeling a little sympathetic towards his junior Xia Xi.
Xu Yanfeng finished his meal, took his plate to the recycling area, slung his schoolbag over one shoulder, and walked away without looking back. Chen Mian was a beat behind, shouting "Wait for me" as he threw away his disgusting meal and caught up with the person in front.
Chen Mian ran out of breath. He opened the cotton curtain of the cafeteria, took a sip of cool air, and began to burp: "Burp... where are you going... burp...?"
Xu Yanfeng replied with three simple words: "What do you think?"
The tone in which he said these three words was quite intriguing. Chen Mian thought that he had changed his mind and was going to the South Square to meet Xia Xi. He smiled and said "Nothing", waved goodbye and watched him go away.
He noticed that Xu Yanfeng left in the direction of the South Square.
Chen Mian breathed a sigh of relief, put his heart at ease, and went to the store next to the cafeteria to buy a bowl of steaming hot oden to soothe his stomach that had just been ravaged.
This is why Chen Mian was so surprised when he saw Xu Yanfeng sitting here after returning to the dormitory, as if he had seen a ghost.
In his mind, Xu Yanfeng should be in the South Square at this moment. He had forgotten that there was a fork in the road between the cafeteria and the South Square, which led directly to the boys' dormitory through a grove of fir trees.
Chen Mian asked innocently, "Have you returned from the South Square?"
Xu Yanfeng had already turned his head back. On his computer screen was an open email. He was carefully choosing his words to reply to the other party. His mind was focused on typing, so his words naturally didn't come from the heart: "Why should I go to South Square?"
"Of course it's because of Xia Xi... Come on." Chen Mian shook his head and sighed, "Just pretend I didn't say anything."
Whether before or now, Xu Yanfeng's attitude has already explained his choice, so there is no need to pry into his true emotions.
Xu Yanfeng turned his back to him and reminded him calmly: "Clean the floor, it's easy to slip."
"Oh." Chen Mian put the unfinished oden on the table, took a few tissues to pick up the juicy white radish that fell on the ground, threw it into the trash can, and went to the bathroom to get a mop to wipe the stains on the tiles.
