Before leaving, Xu Yanfeng didn't tell Xia Xi that he had come out of the high-speed rail station, took a taxi, and went to the hotel he had booked to put his things. The hotel provided a car service for guests of the suite he had booked.
Xu Yanfeng refused the business car sent by the hotel and took a taxi himself.
The driver asked him where he was going, speaking in a dialect accent.
Today is Saturday, and Xu Yanfeng is not sure whether Xia Xi is in her restaurant. He just takes a chance and tells the driver "Pei Shan Hotel". On his phone is the hotel navigation that he searched before the high-speed train arrived.
The driver chuckled, his face understanding. "From out of town, huh? Did you see the news and come here to check in? That girl has become an internet celebrity in our Ganlin area. She's quite popular lately."
Xu Yanfeng didn't know how to answer the driver. He was indeed here for the girl, but not because of the news. The girl was his girlfriend.
He smiled faintly in response.
The driver knew the route well, so he didn't need the navigation system and took a shortcut to Pei Shan Restaurant. "The food there is excellent, and the service is great. It's been open for decades and is well-respected in our area. It's worth a trip just to try the food. Ever since the news went viral, it's been hard for us to get a bite. There's no queue."
The driver was talkative and told us a lot of rumors about the Pei Shan Hotel along the way.
"The restaurant is full of veteran employees who have worked there for over ten or twenty years, with an average age of around forty. Many of them work with their families. The boss's family has many women and they're very kind, so many people are vying for jobs there. I saw some people online saying that the girl was a waitress, but that's just speculation. She's the boss's second daughter, probably helping out that day when she was photographed by a TV reporter..."
Xu Yanfeng listened quietly and responded occasionally so as not to embarrass the driver.
Arriving at the destination, Xu Yanfeng paid the fare. The driver reminded him, "You're here on short notice, so you might not be able to eat. Peishan Hotel is doing a booming business lately, so you need to make reservations in advance. Ganlin has many other reputable, time-honored restaurants you can try."
Xu Yanfeng thanked him politely and got out of the car.
The sun was shining brightly. He walked to the shade and looked up at the Pei Shan Hotel not far away. It was almost eleven o'clock, and there was a constant stream of customers coming in and out. Just as the driver said, business was booming.
Xu Yanfeng didn't go in. After thinking for a moment, he called Xia Xi.
Xia Xi was in the store, and she couldn't escape the fate of being a mascot even on the weekend. She had just sent a group of customers upstairs to the designated private room when the cell phone in her pocket rang. She didn't rush downstairs, but leaned against the wall next to the elevator. When she saw the caller ID clearly, the corners of her lips curled up.
She held the phone in both hands and couldn't wait to put it to her ear. Still pressing her hands on the back of the phone, she raised her voice: "Why are you calling me at this time? Do you miss me?"
Xu Yanfeng didn't ask her whether he wanted to or not, but asked her first: "Where are you?"
Xia Xi crossed her legs, swayed on her toes, and pursed her lips silently, as if Xu Yanfeng was right in front of her. She complained to him, "Where else can I be? I'm working as a waiter in a restaurant. I had two online classes today, but I skipped them both."
Xu Yanfeng paused, a hint of joy leaking out of his usually calm and steady voice: "I wonder if this waiter can serve me."
Xia Xi blinked slightly, not quite understanding what he said, and asked, "What do you mean?"
Xu Yanfeng stopped beating around the bush and said simply, "Come out."
Xia Xi was stunned: "Huh?"
Come out, then what? Where to go...
The expression on Xia Xi's face suddenly froze. Could this be what she thought it meant?
Before she could ask clearly, the call was hung up. Xia Xi turned around and pressed the down button of the elevator. The elevator stopped at the first floor and went up one floor at a time. For the first time, she felt that the speed of the elevator was so slow. She was so impatient that she wanted to fly down.
"bite."
The elevator finally arrived. Xia Xi walked in with her hands and feet together, pressed the first floor button, and then pressed the door closing button. The elevator carried her down one floor at a time, but her heart kept rising, almost jumping into her throat.
She was so afraid that she had misunderstood and would not see Xu Yanfeng when she ran out.
When Xia Xi reached the first floor, she almost bumped into a customer as she exited the elevator. She apologized, but the customer stopped her in surprise, "It's you! Can we take a photo together?"
In the past, Xia Xi would have agreed without hesitation, but at this moment, nothing was more important than Xu Yanfeng.
She apologized again: "Sorry, I have something urgent to go out now, it's not convenient, maybe next time."
Xia Xi didn't want to say more. She squeezed out from beside the customers, ran away, opened the glass door, and a heat wave swept over her. Her face turned red due to the surge of emotions. She looked around and her gaze suddenly stopped.
Xu Yanfeng stood on the right, next to a colorful billboard. He was so handsome and clean, like a miniature of the blue sky and white clouds, diluting the strong colors, yet so conspicuous.
Like a dream, Xia Xi's eyes changed from clear to hazy, and then from hazy to clear again.
Xu Yanfeng seemed to smile and walked towards her.
He took only one step before Xia Xi couldn't help but run towards him, so he stopped. Within three or four seconds, Xia Xi crashed into his arms, and the force was so great that he could hardly stand and leaned back.
Xu Yanfeng put his arms around her waist and felt that she seemed to have lost some weight. Was she tired?
Xia Xi's eyes flashed with surprise and excitement, as if she had won the first prize. The corners of her mouth curved to the extreme, and her emotions fluctuated so much that she gasped when she spoke: "You...how...why are you here?"
His appearance here was totally unexpected to her, it was such a pleasant surprise.
