Chapter 213 Lost the novelty to him

Xia Chenggang had indeed not left Ganlin. After the incident, he had hidden away in the countryside. A few days ago, he disguised himself and took a villager's truck to the county town. He borrowed a public landline to call Su Jinru, hoping to gain her forgiveness.

He thought Su Jinru scolded him harshly, but she was reluctant to leave him. Because it was the same before, when he made a mistake, as long as he apologized to her sincerely and comforted her, she would no longer be angry and treat him the same as before.

Xia Chenggang had never expected that Su Jinru would not be soft-hearted this time. She turned around and asked Xia Xi to call the police and provide clues to the police.

The police traced the landline number to the county seat, and the next step was to search the surrounding towns and villages.

Xia Chenggang accidentally heard the delivery driver in the village talking about encountering the police investigating at the supermarket door when unloading the goods. Alarm bells immediately went on in his heart, and he had a premonition that the police were coming for him.

He returned to his house in panic, cursed at the air, drank half a bottle of liquor, and smashed everything he could see in the house.

Xia Chenggang felt sad and thought that he was finished this time. If the police found him, he would only end up in jail.

Su Jinru was so cruel as to betray him that she would definitely not hire a good lawyer to defend him. Even if he was released from prison in the future, he would have no place to live, let alone live out his life in peace.

Imagining his miserable old age, Xia Chenggang shed tears of regret.

His previous phone call to Su Jinru to cry and confess was not true. At this moment, he really regretted it.

Xia Chenggang squatted on the ground with his head in his hands and cried for a long time. Then he stood up suddenly, shook his head and said no, he couldn't just sit there and wait for death, he couldn't be arrested by the police and put in jail. As long as the police hadn't found him, he still had a chance.

After waking up, he washed his face, tidied his clothes, pretended to be a decent person, borrowed a van from a simple villager, and fled the village overnight.

Xia Chenggang was already flustered and drunk, so his reaction was slow and he hit someone before he even drove out of the country road.

The sharp sound of brakes pierced the silent night, leaving a long black tire mark on the road. The middle-aged man he had hit was lying on the ground, blood all over his head and face. His bicycle fell to the side, parts scattered everywhere. The man raised a hand towards the car and whispered the word "help" in a weak voice.

Xia Cheng just jumped out of the car and took a look. He was so scared that he stumbled back, his back against the cold car body. His face was as pale as paper under the street light, his dry and chapped lips kept trembling, and he was covered in cold sweat.

He twisted his neck stiffly to look around, but there was no one around and no cameras. He climbed into the car in a panic, backed it up a bit, turned the front of the car, drove past and continued his escape.

Poor person who was hit by him, if he had been sent to the hospital in time, he could have saved his life...

Xia Xi stood there stiffly holding her cell phone, a chill running up her entire body from the soles of her feet. She wished so much that this wasn't reality, but a nightmare, and that everything would disappear when she woke up.

But the voice coming out of the receiver was so clear that it reminded her that this was real: "Did you hear what I said?"

Xia Xi opened her mouth, but her throat seemed blocked and she couldn't utter a word.

Suddenly, a broad, warm hand fell on her shoulder. She was startled and shivered. She shrank her neck and turned back suddenly, meeting Xu Yanfeng's caring eyes. She pursed her lips and said to the person on the phone without leaving any trace, "Okay, I understand."

Then hang up the phone.

Xu Yanfeng held her tightly from behind, his eyes passing over her shoulder and landing on the phone in her hand. His brows knitted slightly, "Who's calling you so late?"

Xia Xi lowered her hands, scratched the phone case with her nails, and swallowed: "It's my family calling."

Xu Yanfeng paused slightly. It was not that he didn't want to believe her, but he clearly saw that when she hung up the phone, there was a string of numbers on the screen, but no name.

Will you not note the numbers of your family members?

What's the matter that warrants a call at 3:30 in the morning?

Xu Yanfeng loosened his arms around her and walked around to her. The moment he left, Xia Xi felt cold and subconsciously raised her hand to rub her arm.

The living room lights were off, but the light from the bedroom leaked through the open door, so it wasn't impossible to see. Xu Yanfeng lowered his eyes, his scrutinizing gaze lingering on her face.

Xia Xi turned her face away and rubbed her eyes: "I'm so sleepy, let's go back to sleep."

Xu Yanfeng asked tentatively: "Your family is calling you at this time, has something happened?"

Xia Xi's heart trembled, and she had an urge to speak out. After struggling for a while, she couldn't open her mouth and shook her head gently. If she told too many lies, even she would be deceived. "It's nothing. It's my sister. She hasn't slept yet. She came to me to chat with me. It's all gossip."

When they returned to the room, the warmth in the quilt had dissipated. Xia Xi felt a little cold lying in it, so she curled up. Xu Yanfeng held her, his body like a big stove, continuously releasing heat to drive away the coldness in her body.

From then on until dawn, Xia Xi didn't sleep well. When he closed his eyes, his mind was filled with chaotic things, and his heart was also a mess, wandering between sleep and wakefulness.

*

The next day, Xia Xi was woken up by Xu Yanfeng. After breakfast, he drove her back to school.

When the car stopped, Xia Xi pushed open the door and was about to get out, but Xu Yanfeng grabbed her wrist and pulled her back. Xia Xi fell into the seat, her eyes blank. Xu Yanfeng stared at her with dark eyes, his expression somewhat indifferent: "Are you..."

He stopped talking mid-sentence, remembering that she had called him clingy yesterday.

Xia Xi didn't realize the problem and asked, "What's wrong?"
