Xu Yanfeng withdrew his gaze from the car window, staring at her with a deep, cold gaze, like a bottomless pool.
Ling Yan's heart trembled, her fingers clenching the hem of her skirt. She didn't know which of her words had offended Xu Yanfeng, so she could only choose the most recent one to explain, "I, I accidentally heard Tang Yizhou mention it and found out that you had prepared a share transfer contract for her. I just remembered this matter and I'm worried that you've suffered any losses."
As for those insults to Xia Xi, she had nothing to explain.
Xia Xi betrayed Xu Yanfeng, shouldn't he be scolded?
Scolding her is an understatement. A fickle woman like her deserves a severe lesson. Simply never seeing each other again is too easy for her.
Xu Yanfeng ignored her, looked ahead, and said to Fu Li: "Send me back."
Fu Li turned at the intersection ahead and drove towards Xu Yanfeng's apartment near Nanjing University.
Xu Yanfeng recognized the route: "Not going there."
The apartment was full of traces of Xia Xi, and he didn't want to see them.
Fu Li eased off the accelerator, slowing down the car, undecided: "Where to?"
Xu Yanfeng closed his eyes and leaned back in his chair tiredly: "Whatever."
Fu Li was worried. Xu Yanfeng definitely couldn't go home in this state. His parents would ask questions if they saw him. He suggested, "Why don't you go to my place?"
Xu Yanfeng refused. He didn't want to stay with anyone and just wanted to be alone.
Fu Li mentally searched for Xu Yanfeng's properties in South City and finally took him to a villa, the same one where their student union had held a party last time. Xu Yanfeng opened his eyes, saw the gate of the villa through the windshield, and lowered his eyes in grief.
He and Xia Xi confirmed their relationship in this villa.
Xu Yanfeng: "Send me somewhere else."
Under normal circumstances, Fu Li would have been furious if he was picked on as a driver. But today was different. Considering Xu Yanfeng's mood, he turned the car around without saying a word and took him somewhere else.
*
Xia Xi was in too bad a condition to drink, and she didn't even enter the bar. Zhou Du stuffed her back into the car.
The car moved through the night, its shadows shifting, illuminating Xia Xi's huddled form. She leaned sideways, her shoes off, treading on the edge of the seat, hugging herself like an abandoned animal, feeling utterly insecure.
Zhou Du took her to the house he rented. Assuming she couldn't eat, he didn't order takeout. After thinking it over, he called Liang Yuan.
Half an hour later, Liang Yuan arrived in a hurry. She had the night shift, and since it was Friday, the mall didn't close until ten. She had been swapping shifts with someone else, still in her teller uniform, her face still made up, her hair pulled back tightly in a dark blue hairnet.
"You didn't explain clearly on the phone. What happened to Xixi?" Liang Yuan asked breathlessly.
Zhou Du stood at the doorway, his tall figure blocking out most of the light in the room. His face was in the shadows, and he looked very downhearted. He said simply, "She broke up with Xu Yanfeng. Don't ask any more questions now. Wait until she's willing to tell you."
"Ah?" Liang Yuan's face was full of surprise. "How could it be?"
Xia Xi likes Xu Yanfeng so much. She spent a lot of effort to pursue him and treats him as her own baby. Listening to her talking on the phone with Xu Yanfeng for a long time, calling him "baby" all the time, it's so corny. How could they break up?
Zhou Du said nothing, turned sideways and let her in.
Liang Yuan changed his shoes and saw Xia Xi in the living room. She was lying on the sofa on her side, covered with a thick blanket. Thinking she was asleep, Liang Yuan walked lightly and approached her only to find that her eyes were open. Tears from her left eye flowed into her right eye, and then from the corner of her right eye into her hair, wetting the sofa.
Liang Yuan squatted down beside the sofa, picked up the tissue box on the coffee table, took out a tissue and wiped her tears. He listened to Zhou Du's words and did not ask her why she and Xu Yanfeng broke up, but seeing how sad she was, it was definitely not because she no longer loved him.
"If you feel bad, just cry. Cry as much as you can. Don't hold it in. I'm here with you." Liang Yuan said, "When you've cried enough, take a nap. When you wake up, I'll take you out to eat. I've collected a lot of treasure restaurants. Let's go to each one to eat. Life is long, it's no big deal. What happened has already happened. If you can make amends, make amends. If you can't, forget it and put it behind you. You're Xia Xi, how can you be defeated so easily?"
Liang Yuan said a lot of things, wiping her tears as he spoke.
Zhou Du leaned against the door frame and didn't go in. Listening to the chattering voices inside, his heart, which had been tense for a long time, relaxed a little. After all, girls know how to comfort people. It was right to ask Liang Yuan to come over.
After waiting for a while, the errand boy he called arrived, took the plastic bag and turned to go into the house.
"She hurt her knee. Please apply some medicine to her." Zhou Du handed the plastic bag to Liang Yuan.
Liang Yuan lifted the blanket and rolled up Xia Xi's skirt. The wound on her knee was quite serious, the skin was broken and bleeding. Liang Yuan gently applied medicine with a cotton swab and put on a large waterproof Band-Aid.
"Do you want to take a shower and sleep in your room?" Liang Yuan asked her.
Xia Xi shook his head.
Liang Yuan didn't try to persuade her anymore and stayed with her in the living room.
Late at night, Xia Xi, exhausted from crying, finally fell asleep, tears still staining her face. Her skin was in a terrible state, red and bloodshot. Liang Yuan switched to a wet wipe and wiped her face. Then, tiptoeing to the bathroom, he removed the hairnet at the back of his head in front of the mirror and washed his face with Zhou Du's facial cleanser.
The house Zhou Du rented had two bedrooms and a living room, one used as a bedroom and the other as a workshop. He stayed in the workshop. Liang Yuan pushed the door open and went in. The room was filled with the smell of tobacco.
Zhou Du raised his eyelids and glanced at her, raised his hand to wave away the smoke, stood up to push open the window, and put out the half-smoked cigarette in the ashtray with his fingers.
