The three sisters squeezed into the back seat of a taxi, which was heading towards the hotel where they were staying.
Su Jinru couldn't sit still. She clasped her hands together tightly and walked around the room, looking at her watch from time to time. Maybe because the road was slippery due to the snow, she was much later than expected.
The two legs dangled from the sofa, and he sighed like an adult: "Brother, what happened to grandma?"
Ziheng was playing with a Rubik's Cube. Upon hearing this, he looked up at Su Jinru and said, "Mom and aunt have been out for a long time. Grandma must be worried about them."
"There's nothing to worry about. They're all adults now." Youyou held up her chin, her eyelids drooping. "Grandma is shaking me so hard I feel dizzy. I want to sleep."
As she spoke, she tilted her body and fell on the sofa.
Xia Ziheng patted her arm and handed her the Rubik's Cube with all six sides assembled: "I've put it together for you."
Youyou sat up quickly: "You are amazing! You put it together in such a short time? Why can't I do it? Teach me."
"If I don't teach you, you won't have the patience to learn."
"I'll study hard this time."
Ziheng was not fooled. His sister was only interested in things for a short time, except for playing with Barbie dolls.
The room was filled with the sound of children talking, so Su Jinru didn't hear the knock on the door.
Xia Xi pushed the door open and came in: "Mom, we brought my sister back."
Su Jinru had her back to the door. She turned around suddenly and saw Xia Yue wrapped in a black down jacket. She burst into tears of joy. Just as she took a step, Xia Yue rushed over and hugged her: "Mom, I've worried you all these years."
"It's good that you're back, it's good that you're back." Su Jinru hugged her tightly.
The two children had never seen Xia Yue before, so they jumped off the sofa and stared at her curiously.
Xia Yue stepped out of Su Jinru's arms and looked down at the little girl with her eyes wide open. She was wearing a pink sweater with ruffles, a gray woolen pleated skirt, and thick tights. Her face was white and tender, and she looked a little chubbier than in the photo, like a little princess.
Xia Yue squatted down and reached out to touch her face.
Youyou was very brave and never shy. She just felt that the expression of the adult in front of her was too strange. She was a little scared and stepped back timidly, avoiding her hand and hugging Xia Xi's thigh. She tilted her head to look at Xia Yue, but still felt that the look in her eyes was a little scary. She looked up and asked Xia Xi: "Mom, who is this? I don't know her. She looks so strange."
Xia Yue's hand fell empty, and a piece of her heart felt hollowed out, and tears blurred her vision.
Xia Xi looked at her sister with a soothing look, rubbing the little girl's head with her hand, and said softly: "Remember when mom told you before that mom had a sister, whom you and Ziheng had never seen? She is mom's sister."
Youyou pursed her lips, her memory was pretty good: "Is she Xiaoyue?"
Xia Xi smiled and nodded, then turned to explain to Xia Yue: "Grandma mentioned you at the dinner table once, and she remembered it and knew your name was Xiaoyue."
Xia Yue burst into laughter.
Youyou kept talking: "I still remember that Mom said Xiaoyue did something wrong and was scolded by the police and put in solitary confinement. When she reflected on it, she could meet us. It's just like when I didn't do my homework well and Mom made me lean against the wall to reflect on it."
"That's right." Xia Xi said, "She will live with us from now on."
Children aged five or six know much more than adults imagine. Many times when they ask her questions, she doesn't want to answer them by lying or deceiving them, and tries to use the truth that they can understand.
Youyou asked: "I call my mother's younger sister Auntie, what should I call my mother's older sister?"
Xia Xi looked at Xia Yue and couldn't bear to hear Youyou calling her aunt, as she was Youyou's biological mother.
Xia Yue stood up, shook Xia Xi's arm, and motioned her not to speak. Then she looked at the ignorant little girl, smiled with tears in her eyes, and said, "Just call me Xiaoyue."
"Xiao Yue?" Youyou was no longer timid. She let go of Xia Xi's thigh and ran over to hold Xia Yue's hand.
"Yeah." Xia Yue felt the warmth of her little hand, and her heart softened. She didn't dare to squeeze it hard for fear of breaking it.
Xia Yue wiped her eyes, looked at Ziheng again, covered her mouth, turned her back, and said to Xia Xi: "You raised these two children so well..."
Xia Xi knew that she had more to say, so she asked Ziheng to take Youyou to play on the sofa.
Avoiding the child, Xia Yue said seriously, "Don't tell Youyou that I'm her mother yet. I'm afraid she won't be able to accept it. Let's wait until we get to know each other better. I'm already very satisfied just to see her and touch her." She shook Xia Xi's hand gratefully, "She's really grown up well, so cute and so sensible. It's all thanks to you."
Xia Xi respected her decision and she believed Youyou would accept her.
*
The family spent New Year's Eve in their house in the south city.
Su Jinru prepared the ingredients for the New Year's Eve dinner, started kneading the dough, and prepared to make dumplings.
The three sisters helped her. Su Jinru looked over and saw that the three of them were huddled together, discussing what filling to use for the dumplings. They couldn't reach a consensus for a long time, and finally decided to use three kinds of fillings.
After the discussion, the three sisters started chatting.
Xia Yue asked: "Why didn't my brother-in-law come?"
She was not familiar with Chen Songbai and had never dealt with him. From Xia Xuan's description, he was an honest and considerate man.
Xia Yue herself had suffered a lot from men, so the word "honest" was something she had to consider. Of course, we can't generalize everyone, there are still many good people in the world.
Xia Xuan: "His parents are both in their hometown, and he's their only son, so he has to go back to spend the New Year with them. Our family finally got together, and I wanted to spend the New Year with you. We discussed it and decided to go back to our respective homes."
