He put his fist to his lips and coughed lightly, then said to the driver, "Drive a little faster."
The driver thought he was in a hurry to get home, so he said "Oh" and increased the speed slightly.
Half an hour had been agreed upon, and a little over twenty minutes later, Xu Yanfeng opened the door. The sounds of cartoons and the voices of two children came into his ears, and a sense of joy filled him.
"Uncle!" Youyou raised the small fork in her hand, which had a piece of cantaloupe on it, and greeted Xu Yanfeng, "You're back."
The little girl had two ponytails and her eyes were as curved as crescent moons, revealing two rows of neat teeth. Ziheng, who was standing next to her, looked straight ahead, as if he hadn't noticed there was someone else in the house.
Xu Yanfeng nodded and smiled gently: "Where's your mother?"
Youyou puffed up her cheeks and mumbled, "Cooking in the kitchen."
Xu Yanfeng was slightly stunned. Why was Xia Xi cooking? Where was the nanny?
Can Xia Xi cook?
Xu Yanfeng walked towards the kitchen. Xia Xi was wearing a loose lavender sweater and beige knitted pants. Her sleeves were rolled up to her elbows. Her forearms were slender and white. She lowered her head, and her thick eyelashes cast a small shadow on her face. Her long hair was tied low behind her head, with a few strands scattered on her cheeks and neck.
Xia Xi was peeling shrimps when she heard familiar footsteps approaching from afar. She turned her head to look, raised her arm, and brushed aside the few strands of hair that were floating around her cheek.
Xu Yanfeng's Adam's apple moved slightly, and he glanced at the ingredients on the counter: "Where's Aunt Zhang?"
"Her father-in-law was in a car accident and is in the hospital for surgery, so he can't come." Xia Xi said, "I gave her a few days off."
Xu Yanfeng: "Can you cook?"
In his memory, Xia Xi, like him, knew nothing about cooking. She even joked to herself that it seemed a bit embarrassing for the second lady of the prestigious Peishan Hotel to not know how to cook.
Xia Xi: "Don't worry, I won't blow up the kitchen, nor will I poison you."
When she reminded him of this, Xu Yanfeng remembered his dark history of ruining a bunch of eggs and choked.
Xu Yanfeng left the kitchen and came back in a few moments later. He was only wearing a shirt, with his suit jacket and tie removed. He folded his sleeves as he walked, "Let me help you."
"Don't." Xia Xi refused bluntly, "Get out and don't cause trouble for me."
Xu Yanfeng: “…”
She refused, so Xu Yanfeng did it himself. He held her wrist, pushed her aside, and took over peeling the shrimp for her.
Seeing that he was peeling the vegetables properly, Xia Xi let him do as he pleased, heated up the oil in a pan, and started cooking.
Xu Yanfeng was worried at first, but when he saw her stir-frying and adding seasonings skillfully, he believed that she really could cook and was not just talking.
Lu Mingji’s words suddenly rang in her mind—it wasn’t easy for her during those years abroad.
"When we were together, why didn't you mention your plan to go abroad?" Xu Yanfeng threw a peeled shrimp into the glass bowl and said lightly, "At grandma's funeral, I heard Aunt Lin mention that after your family was in trouble, Xia Yue went out to borrow money."
The implication is that the cost of her studying abroad is not low, and where does the money come from?
