Chapter 4: Deadly
Chi Cheng withdrew his gaze from the blurry photo on the car screen of the stubborn figure stumbling away with his hands covering his forehead.
As his fingertips moved slightly, a small snake, as white as jade and only as thick as a finger, slid out from his sleeve tenderly and wrapped around his slender fingers. The triangular snake head rubbed his fingertips affectionately.
Chi Cheng lowered his eyelids, and his thick eyelashes cast a small shadow under his eyelids, making it impossible to see the emotions in his eyes.
In the passenger seat, a burly, resolute-looking man named Li Gang sat upright, holding a tablet in his hand. On the screen were a few blurry snapshots and a simple information summary.
"We've checked it out," Li Gang said in a low, steady voice. "The guy who got hit was called Wu Suowei. He's a local, unemployed, and shares an apartment with a man named Jiang Xiaoshuai who runs a clinic. Around 3:00 this afternoon, he got into an argument with Miss Yue Yue at the entrance to the commercial street. Miss Yue said some harsh words, and then a yellow-haired guy hit her with a brick."
"Brick?" Chi Cheng's eyebrows raised slightly, his fingertips still teasing the little jealous girl, his tone emotionless. "Who is Yue Yue looking for?"
"Not really," Li Gang answered simply, "it was more like... a spontaneous act. The person was shouting about protection and love or something like that."
Chi Cheng chuckled softly, the laughter was cold and contained a hint of playful mockery.
"Protecting love? With a brick?" The little vinegar bag seemed to sense his owner's emotions and spat out his bright red tongue.
Chi Cheng's gaze returned to the neon lights outside the window. He gently tapped the little snake's head with his fingertips and suddenly changed the subject: "Have you found the lost snakes?"
He teased the little jealous girl's chin, and the little white snake immediately wrapped itself around him tighter and more affectionately.
Li Gang was stunned for a moment, obviously not expecting the boss to suddenly ask this.
He quickly adjusted his attitude and lowered his voice, "Not yet. The chairman is watching too closely. It's hard for our people to get close enough to conduct a thorough search."
Chi Cheng nodded expressionlessly, neither surprised nor disappointed.
He extended his index finger, letting the little vinegar bag slowly slide along his finger toward his palm, his movements carrying the calmness of a master. "Let's go, back home."
"Yes." The driver responded and started the car.
Li Gang hesitated for a moment, carefully observing his boss's expression through the rearview mirror, but couldn't help but ask, "Then... that kid you asked me to investigate, does he need... any help?"
Of course, he was referring to the poor boy who dared to provoke the boss's wife in the street and attracted the boss's attention.
Chi Cheng leaned back in the leather seat, the little vinegar bun in his palm curled up into a ball, as quiet as a piece of warm white jade.
He closed his eyes, his thick eyelashes cast a small shadow under his eyes, and his thin lips were slightly parted, with a clear and unquestionable command.
"Keep a close eye on it."
Film and Television City, the filming site of a costume drama.
Wu Suowei was wearing a tattered soldier's uniform, and his face was smeared with several lines of blood plasma by the makeup artist. The scar on his forehead was particularly realistic, and he looked extremely miserable.
The director really has a good eye for talent!
He thought happily, recalling that during the interview just now, the assistant director just casually glanced at his gauze-wrapped head and asked, "Can you lie down?"
He immediately patted his chest and guaranteed, "Yes! I can lie down until the end of time!"
The other party waved his hand and let him stay.
This money is so easy to make! No need to be blown by the wind or exposed to the sun, just lie down and act as a background!
It's the perfect safe haven after rebirth! Chi Cheng? Don't ever get close to me in this life!
While applying his makeup, the young female makeup artist couldn't help but steal glances at his handsome face, even with the gauze and fake blood wrapped around it. She whispered, "With your background... it's a shame you're playing a corpse... why don't you talk to the director and give you a smaller role with lines?"
Wu Suowei was so embarrassed that he dug his toes into the ground and could only laugh dryly: "No, no! Playing a corpse is fine! It's fine! It saves you the trouble!"
I was madly complaining in my mind: Will I have lines? Will I show my face? What if I accidentally become famous and that crazy Chi Cheng sees me?
No! Absolutely not! Dead bodies are king! Safety first!
"Hey! The one...playing the corpse!" A man with a booming voice shouted from a distance, holding a megaphone. "Yes, you! The one with the blood on his face! Come over here and lie down! There's going to be an explosion later, and you'll be right next to it! Remember! Stay dead! Don't move! Don't even move your eyes!"
"Hey! Okay, Director!" Wu Suowei immediately put away his silly smile, picked up his small stool and ran over happily. He quickly found a designated position, and without saying a word, he stretched out his body and lay face down in a pile of rubble and dust that had been arranged in advance.
His posture was perfect, motionless, and he was so professional that he looked as if he had been dead for eight hundred years.
The cold gravel scratched his cheeks and chest, and the smell of dust filled his nostrils.
He closed his eyes and tried to empty himself.
Dead...dead...I am now just a corpse without any emotions...
Money…money…
One hundred and fifty a day...
There was a cacophony of voices and the noise of moving machines all around.
He heard the hero and heroine acting out their affectionate and romantic scenes.
The hero embraced the heroine affectionately: "Nian Nian~ I will never let you down in this life!"
The heroine was in tears: "General, if there is an afterlife..."
Wu Suowei couldn't help muttering in his heart.
Tsk tsk, this line... makes my teeth so sour...
But it’s really nice to be the protagonist… The pay for one scene is enough for me to eat spicy hot pot for several months…
Speaking of which, that madman Chi Cheng... seemed to have said something like 'you are mine'?
Chi Cheng's handsome and cold face, and the cold touch of the little white snake coiled between his fingers, suddenly entered his mind.
Wu Suowei's body, lying on the ground, stiffened almost imperceptibly for a moment, and he quickly shook his head as if to throw away something dirty.
Bah! Why would you miss him? It's bad luck!
No! Damn it, brother next to me, you pressed my arm!
I lay there for most of the day.
The coldness of the ground seeped through the thin costume into the gaps between his bones, causing pain in his back and waist.
The blood plasma on his face had dried, leaving him feeling tight.
What's even more terrible is that because the place where he died was relatively important and was a must-pass place on the protagonist's charge route, he felt that he had been stepped on by different types of ancient combat boots at least ten times!
Once, a size 42 big foot stepped firmly on his calf, and the pain was so severe that he almost jumped up and cursed on the spot!
Depend on!
Don’t you have to pay for medical expenses if you step on someone?!
Wu Suowei wailed in his heart, gritting his teeth and holding on, his little calculations in his mind began to work frantically again.
I wonder if the crew will reimburse me for safflower oil? Safflower oil costs money too…
Just bear with it! It will pass if you bear with it! Think about the lunch box!
