Chapter 516 Summer is Over (Bug Fix): The Dust Has Settled
Zhang Rujing was on high alert, wishing he could immediately pull Lin Benjian behind him and hide him away.
However, Vice President Chiang simply waved to Lin Benjian, who came out of the international arrivals channel, and said with a smile, "Welcome back to Taiwan! I am Chiang Shang-yi from TSMC, in charge of research and development."
Lin Benjian was extremely surprised.
When he worked at IBM, he had a lot of dealings with TSMC. Later, when he started his own company, TSMC was also one of his clients. In addition, he moved from Taiwan to the United States in his early years, while his parents stayed in Taiwan, so he naturally had a stronger connection with them and was familiar with many technical officials and engineers at TSMC.
But he didn't know Vice President Chiang Shang-yi before, nor had he ever dealt with this TSMC executive.
He was truly flattered when people suddenly appeared and greeted him so warmly.
When shaking hands with the other party, he couldn't help but express his surprise: "Hello, Mr. Jiang, what brings you here?"
This time, his trip to Taiwan was not official; apart from a few close relatives and friends, he did not notify anyone else.
Moreover, Chiang Shang-yi is the vice president of TSMC, not some unknown junior employee. Why would he go to the airport to pick him up?
Zhang Rujing also pricked up his ears, eager to know exactly where the problem lay.
In fact, if he were in a different time and space, he probably wouldn't have much of an opinion about this scene.
The problem is that when Mr. Wang was preparing to recruit Dr. Lin, he called him in advance to ask if Dr. Lin would agree if TSMC wanted to recruit him.
What was his analysis at the time? It was very likely.
So when he sees TSMC's Vice President Chiang, he can't help but feel nervous.
Vice President Jiang, on the other hand, appeared relaxed and cheerful, saying with a broad smile, "Born, your return to Taiwan is a great event for the Taiwanese semiconductor industry! How could I not come? I absolutely should have come!"
Taiwan's success in the semiconductor industry can be attributed not only to strong government support, but also to the impact of the mid-to-late 1980s. As the US semiconductor industry was severely impacted by Japan and declined, Silicon Valley companies laid off large numbers of employees, leading many Chinese engineers to return to Taiwan.
They brought back advanced technologies and industry experience, helping companies like UMC and Etron Technology to grow.
TSMC's development has also benefited from this talent acquisition.
Therefore, there is absolutely no problem with what Vice President Jiang said.
Although Lin Benjian was still full of doubts, he felt a sense of comfort. He was a little embarrassed: "I just got back and haven't tidied up yet."
Chiang Shang-yi is known for his magnanimity and is affectionately called "Father Chiang" by younger colleagues in the industry. He is not the type to make things difficult for others. He readily agreed with a smile and nodded, "Well then, Born, you go ahead with your work. We can have coffee together sometime."
As he turned to leave, he nodded to Zhang Rujing, "Richard, you're here too. Let's all have coffee together next time!"
Zhang Rujing was too preoccupied to even drink coffee; his back was covered in sweat.
We were colleagues when we were at Texas Instruments, and later when we returned to Taiwan to work in wafer foundry, we were in the same industry again.
Who doesn't know who?
Although Chiang Shang-yi's father is a core figure in TSMC's technology research and development, he is also very skilled in negotiation and talent recruitment. If TSMC sets its sights on Born and sends him to handle the matter, it will be a real headache.
So Zhang Rujing had no choice but to remain calm and nodded and smiled at him: "Okay, then you'll have to choose a good shop then."
Thank God, this uninvited guest has finally left.
Unable to contain his confusion any longer, Zhang Rujing helped Lin Benjian push his suitcase while muttering to himself, "Boss Jiang is really well-informed. How did he know all this?"
However, Lin Benjian's relatives and friends nearby took the initiative to answer his questions: "It seems that Mr. Jiang was seeing someone off just now, and we happened to run into each other. He took the initiative to chat with me."
He was flattered at the time because he was just a nobody who had only sent data to TSMC a few times, yet Mr. Chiang recognized him.
Later, upon hearing that he had come to pick up his great-uncle Dr. Lin, Mr. Jiang praised his great-uncle's abilities highly and insisted on accompanying them to pick him up, saying that his great-uncle's return was a source of pride for Taiwan.
He was beaming with pride as he listened.
Only now did Zhang Rujing's heart, which had been hanging in suspense, finally settle back into his chest.
Oh, it turns out it was just a false alarm, nothing more than a coincidence.
After picking up the person, when he called Boss Wang, he mentioned the matter and even analyzed it: "It seems that TSMC is really going to fight UMC to the death."
Why did he say that?
Because Chiang Shang-yi repeatedly spoke of Taiwan's glory and the good news for Taiwan's semiconductor industry, it was clear that he placed TSMC in the leading position of Taiwan's semiconductor industry, which is why he said such things.
Wang Xiao jumped up from the sofa and urged anxiously, "Zhang Bo, bring Lin Bo back right away. He can't stay in Taiwan, he absolutely can't stay."
Zhang Rujing wasn't a time traveler, so of course he didn't know that Lin Benjian was recruited to TSMC by Chiang Shang-yi, which led to TSMC's later success.
She's different; she knows that, which is why she reacts strongly when she hears that name.
Zhang Rujing was startled by her. He felt that this Boss Wang was good in every way, except that she was easily startled.
However, given that the other party's intuition was indeed very accurate and she precisely predicted that the US authorities would block people, Dr. Zhang was willing to trust her judgment and immediately agreed: "Okay, okay, I'll go find the person tomorrow."
It's too late today; it would be impolite to call or visit in person.
The next day, Zhang Rujing didn't waste any time, postponing all his work and going directly to Lin Benjian's mother's house.
Since he did not plan to stay in Taiwan for long, Lin Benjian did not buy a new property before returning, and only stayed temporarily at his mother's house with his wife.
The housekeeper came to open the door. She had seen Zhang Rujing yesterday, and now that she recognized his face, she immediately smiled broadly: "Dr. Zhang, you've come too."
When Zhang Rujing heard the word "also," his heart skipped a beat.
He asked with a smile, "Excuse me, is there another distinguished guest here today?"
The maid rambled on, "There are also two men in suits, Mr. Jiang and Mr. Yan."
Zhang Rujing's heart sank to the bottom. Boss Wang's intuition was indeed amazing, and he had predicted it once again. TSMC did indeed intend to recruit Lin Benjian.
He suddenly tensed up, fearing that Born might change his mind.
After all, staying in Taiwan to work means I can spend more time with my elderly mother, and I have many old relatives and friends there. I'm also more familiar with the peninsula-style corporate culture in Taiwan compared to the mainland.
It would be difficult for anyone to remain unmoved in such an environment.
But he absolutely could not allow this to happen; he was determined to bring Born to Shanghai.
Zhang Rujing quickly adjusted his expression and said with a smile, "Lin Bo is a good person. Everyone wants to see him when he returns to Taiwan."
Once inside the living room, he took the initiative to say to Chiang Shang-yi, "Mr. Chiang, you're not being fair. You said we'd have coffee together, but you didn't even invite me."
Chiang Shang-yi, who was sitting on the sofa, stood up with a smile when he saw him: "You didn't call me either."
Zhang Rujing said in a serious tone: "I'm not here for coffee today, I'm here for tea."
Everyone else in the living room laughed, and the atmosphere instantly became warm and cheerful.
The maid served tea and snacks. Some people drank tea, some drank coffee, and no matter what they drank, the tea and snacks went well with it.
The group chatted for a bit about the scenery of Florida. Linnovation was initially established in Austin, Texas, before moving to Temple City, Florida.
He also made some casual remarks about how long the summer was in Taiwan, and Chiang Shang-yi inquired about Dr. Lin's mother's health, saying he would introduce him to a doctor he knew.
When it was almost time, he and Manager Yan took the initiative to get up and say goodbye: "Born, it's so good to have you back. Let's talk in detail next time."
Lin Benjian smiled and saw the man to the door, nodding and saying, "It is my honor to learn from you. I think your idea of placing the photomask and the chip's micro-image in the same place is very visionary. The imaging on the chip and the imaging on the photomask have many things in common and can help each other."
Upon hearing this, Vice President Jiang's smile deepened.
When he met Dr. Lin in person yesterday, he really hadn't thought about hiring anyone, at least not so soon.
However, after returning to the company, he ran into his boss, President Zhang, and during their casual conversation, the topic of Dr. Lin's sudden return to Taiwan came up.
As a result, the boss immediately instructed him to recruit people.
Right now, they are fighting the fiercest battle with UMC. In addition to high-end production lines and skilled engineers, TSMC also needs continuous technological breakthroughs to remain invincible in this competition and in future competitions.
TSMC has always been the leader, never the second-best. Now that they have key technical talent, they must recruit them as soon as possible.
With the boss's personal instructions, Vice President Jiang naturally had to pay a visit in person.
He wasn't worried that Lin Benjian would be recruited by Zhang Rujing. Worldwide is known as the third largest wafer foundry in Taiwan, but its size is really small compared to TSMC.
Its size also means that it is difficult for it to invest too many resources and funds in research and development.
Dr. Lin's research focus is on lithography, and it's obvious that TSMC is a better fit for him than World Optoelectronics.
Chiang Shang-yi never imagined that Chang Ru-jing came as a middleman, but was actually recruiting people for lithography machine factories in mainland China.
He did know that Zhang Rujing was always going to the mainland, but he also knew that Worldwide was jointly building its third wafer fab in Hong Kong, and it was no secret that the funds behind the Hong Kong capital came from the mainland.
Therefore, it's perfectly normal for Zhang Bo to go to the mainland so often.
Moreover, he was well aware of the current state of the semiconductor industry in mainland China. No company should have the capability or the need to recruit Dr. Lin.
Feeling confident of victory and with no competitors in sight, Vice President Jiang left in high spirits.
Zhang Rujing, who was left behind, overheard their conversation about TSMC's R&D department, but his heart was in turmoil.
As a peer, both World Wide Semiconductor and TSMC manufacture wafers in Taiwan, so he naturally knows TSMC's organizational structure very well.
TSMC currently doesn't have a single department that combines chip and light lithography.
So the most likely reason they're discussing this now is that TSMC is preparing to offer the position of department head to recruit Lin Benjian.
It can be said that they spared no expense.
After finally seeing the person off, Zhang Rujing took the initiative to break the ice: "Born, what are you thinking?"
Lin Benjian knew he couldn't hide it from Zhang Rujing, and besides, he had no intention of hiding it.
Today, Vice President Jiang, whom he had only met yesterday, came to his door with Manager Yan, whom he had dealt with before, and it was indeed to recruit him.
The position offered was indeed that of a department head, and in addition to a salary, there were also stock options and a signing bonus; the attitude was undeniably enthusiastic.
Vice President Jiang said that if he was interested, he could go to TSMC for further discussions.
Zhang Rujing eagerly pressed him, "So, are you planning to go?"
Lin Benjian smiled and shook his head: "Of course I won't go. The Lord has already given me instructions. I should go to Shanghai."
From June to August, before leaving the United States, the couple actually suffered a lot.
It wasn't that they were reluctant to leave their 120-square-meter house by the sea, nor was it that closing the company was too frustrating; rather, it was leaving Tianbai City and the brothers and sisters there that they found so hard to let go of.
But since God has given them instructions, they should leave.
The same applies now.
Although he had a pleasant experience dealing with TSMC engineers before, and knew that it was a thriving company with hardworking and intelligent people, he was someone he really enjoyed interacting with.
Compared to them, the engineers at the Shanghai Lithography Machine Factory are like wild animals; you can't predict where their thoughts will jump next or what they will do.
Dealing with the latter would obviously be more difficult for him, and he would face more challenges.
But since the Lord has directed him to Shanghai, he should not disobey the Lord's will and stay in Taiwan.
Zhang Rujing, a devout believer, smiled and nodded, saying, "The Lord will give us the best arrangement."
So, don't waste any more time, hurry up and pack your bags to go to Shanghai. Who knows what kind of trouble might arise if you stay any longer?
Dr. Zhang was quick and efficient, taking charge of everything and immediately starting to arrange all matters.
Wang Xiao answered his call and learned that Dr. Lin had declined TSMC's offer, which made her breathe a sigh of relief.
Xiao Gao and Xiao Zhao listened to the story for a long time and both found it unbelievable.
How amazing! Such a brilliant expert, a real scientist, can't even make his own decisions and has to rely on God?
Doesn't Mr. Ivanov also frequently invoke my God? Yet, they see him as someone who never asks for guidance from the Lord; he always does whatever he wants.
Oh, maybe the boss is his master.
Wang Xiao glanced at him sideways and said in a sinister tone, "Newton also believed in God."
In reality, no one can truly empathize with someone else. For example, she has no faith, so she doesn't understand the true thoughts of Christians.
Her original plan was to retain employees by offering high salaries, and to shock them with salaries three times higher than the market rate.
Whether a person values money or not, if you are willing to pay a high price, it is a high degree of recognition and affirmation for them.
After all, in this life, everything else is illusory, except for real money in your hands.
Unexpectedly, even though they were genuine Christians, their final choice still depended on God's guidance.
Xiao Gao and Xiao Zhao were chatting idly next to the boss, extremely curious: "How exactly does God guide us? Is it like burning incense at a temple, or drawing lots?"
Lyuba rolled her eyes and said irritably, "Whether it's Catholicism or Christianity, there are no lots to draw."
The two bodyguards asked their colleague, "So what guidance does God give?"
Lyuba blinked and said seriously, "Pray to the Bible, express your doubts, and God will give you guidance at the right time."
Good heavens, that's a mysterious statement.
What constitutes the right time? And what qualifies as guidance?
Xiao Gao couldn't help but complain: "Your God is too lazy and too good at shirking responsibility! At least our temples and Taoist monasteries give you a divination slip with good, medium, and bad fortune, and they even interpret it for you after you draw it. So you rely entirely on sudden enlightenment? If the final result is bad, then it's all your fault because you misunderstood God's guidance. God refuses to take any responsibility at all!"
Wang Xiao slapped him on the head and scolded, "What nonsense are you spouting? You have to respect beliefs! Let me tell you, from now on, experts will come from all over the world, each with their own beliefs. No one is allowed to criticize anyone's beliefs."
Xiao Gao and Xiao Zhao chuckled.
I understand. Sometimes it's better to see through things than to say them.
But frankly, someone who works like God would never fit into the pantheon of gods in China.
Didn't you see that even when it doesn't rain, the Dragon King gets dragged out of the temple and beaten?
Wang Xiao skipped over that part and focused entirely on waiting for Dr. Lin to return to Shanghai.
Fortunately, even God probably felt that such repeated torment was too cruel, so this time, Dr. Lin's journey from Taiwan to Shanghai did not encounter too many setbacks.
The procedures were completed smoothly, and the plane arrived at the airport on time without any delays.
When Wang Xiao saw the person dragging their suitcase out, the heart that had been in her throat finally settled back into her chest.
Once people arrive, they must stay and not even consider leaving.
At 57, I'm at the prime of my life, and working for another 20 years shouldn't be a problem.
Oh no, 30 years is fine too.
After all, the Bible clearly states that the prophets Moses and Caleb only started their new careers after the age of 80.
As a devout Christian, Dr. Lin Benjian would surely agree with his idea.
Mr. Wang confidently planned out the next 30 years of someone else's life.
She stepped forward with a beaming smile, first shaking hands with Dr. Lin, then with Mrs. Lin, her voice brighter than the Shanghai sunshine at the end of August: "Welcome, welcome, a warm welcome."
The talent recruitment plan, which started in early May and lasted for nearly four months, has finally come to an end, and her lithography machine factory is about to usher in a new era.
Xiao Gao and Xiao Zhao exchanged a glance, sensing that the boss and Liu Ba were still a bit more formidable.
Their original thought was that since Dr. Lin's mother was still in Taiwan, it was likely that Dr. Lin would come to Shanghai first, while his wife would stay in Taiwan to take care of his elderly mother.
As a result, the boss and Lyuba both rebuked them, saying, "Are you crazy?"
Only a man would make such a selfish attempt to outsource his filial piety.
How can you force your wife and mother, who have lived alone for many years, to live together? Do you even have a brain? What are you thinking?
As it turns out, Dr. Lin's IQ and EQ are both higher than theirs, which is why he came to Shanghai with his wife.
Wang Xiao was an impatient person. He had just settled the people in when he dragged Dr. Lin to negotiate with the German company. He didn't dare to waste even half a minute.
On the one hand, lithography machine manufacturers cannot afford to wait.
Historically, TSMC only began recruiting Lin Benjian in 2000, but this time it was only the summer of 1999 when Vice President Chiang couldn't wait to make a move, which shows that everyone was eager for technological breakthroughs.
As a latecomer, Wuzhou's lithography machine factory needs to work even harder to move forward.
On the other hand, Boss Wang has been suffering for so long, she also needs to take a vacation and relax. Otherwise, her nerves will break down from being so tense every day.
So after September 1st, when the students all started school, Ms. Wang finally got her long-delayed vacation.
The reason it had to be delayed until today is partly due to her issues and partly due to Ivanov's reasons.
The latter also only managed to find the time now.
Upon seeing Wang Xiao for the first time, Ivanov was taken aback: "Wang, you've lost weight!"
Her face looked noticeably smaller.
However, back in the spring, she complained that she couldn't fit into her new dress anymore because it was a whole size too small.
Xiao Gao and Xiao Zhao both thought that the boss would use the excuse of being suffering from the summer heat. After all, if he directly said that he was unable to eat or sleep because of Dr. Lin, something just didn't seem right.
As it turned out, they underestimated their boss.
Because what Boss Wang said right away was, "I miss you, don't I?"
The director of the Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office, who was in charge of receiving foreign guests, understood Russian and instinctively wanted to turn his head away.
This time, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister came to Shanghai, claiming it was a private trip with no official business involved.
However, in China, no diplomatic matter is trivial, and diplomatic etiquette has always been thorough and rigorous.
For important guests of this caliber, the official attitude is usually to interpret it as "publicly declaring it a private trip, but in reality carrying a semi-official flavor," and therefore it will be prepared according to the standards of a quasi-official visit.
In addition to him, the director of the Foreign Affairs Office, the vice mayor of Shanghai in charge of foreign affairs and trade also came to the airport to pick him up.
But now, they can only wait for the embrace in front of them to end.
Prejudice is such a strange thing. Even though reason can calmly analyze that it was just a joke, emotions have already kicked reason to the winds before reason can even clear up.
Now Ivanov completely believed Wang Xiao's claim that he had lost weight because he missed her, just like the ancient Chinese poem says, "For her sake, I have become haggard."
He was filled with guilt, and as he held her, he kept apologizing: "I'm sorry, Your Majesty, I should have stayed by your side."
But he simply couldn't get away this summer.
From spring to summer, the Kremlin was busy mediating the Kosovo crisis, and the President made several visits to European countries, trying to bring the two sides together and force them to negotiate peace.
In this situation, the White House in Moscow naturally took on almost all other tasks, and no one dared to rest.
Finally, at the end of July, under pressure from various countries, the two sides in the Kosovo crisis signed a peace agreement, basically maintaining the principles. Exhausted senior officials in Moscow seized the last days of summer and quickly arranged their vacations.
Ivanov couldn't leave either; he had to stay and guard the base camp.
Everyone's gone on vacation, so who's going to do the work?
Besides, he's so young, how could he possibly compete with Prime Minister Chernomyrdin and Deputy Prime Minister Soskowitz, who are both over fifty, for vacation time?
Only after both of them had finished their vacations did he feel comfortable applying, and he finally received his own vacation in September.
Well, while others are enjoying the summer, they've turned it into an autumn outing.
It's Shanghai, just like other places in the Yangtze River Delta region. After the Warring States period, there was no Spring and Autumn period.
The sun in early September can also turn people into melted butter.
The Shanghai vice mayor, who was also covered in sweat, could only secretly rejoice that he hadn't taken the easy way out by not picking people up at the airport, but instead waiting to show his face at the banquet.
Thank goodness he's hardworking.
Because this Deputy Prime Minister Ivanov resolutely refused to attend the banquet.
He even hugged himself to express his apology: "I'm sorry for causing trouble for your work. But this trip to China is really just a private one. I would much rather spend time with my loved one. I'm so sorry, we have our own plans."
Well, what else can we say? The first principle of foreign affairs hospitality is to fully respect the opinions of foreign guests.
Fortunately, Deputy Prime Minister Ivanov was not a stubborn person; on the contrary, he had a good temper and at least did not make things difficult for anyone regarding security.
In accordance with international practice, all countries provide high-level security for important foreign guests.
Some of the more easygoing foreign guests found this inconvenient and preferred their own security teams to handle the security. However, Mr. Ivanov didn't send anyone out; his only request was that it not be too ostentatious, as it was truly a private trip and he hadn't come with any mission.
China cooperated with his request, and a security team composed of professional departments such as the Ministry of Public Security and the Public Security Bureau's Guard Bureau worked in coordination with their Russian counterparts.
The latter are responsible for the innermost area, while they oversee the overall security of the outer perimeter.
This includes conducting preliminary reconnaissance and covert control of the route His Excellency will take, implementing strict security measures and technical monitoring at the hotel where he will stay, clearing, conducting security checks and controlling the flow of people at the places he will visit in advance, and leveraging local advantages to assess all possible social security risks.
When Wang Xiao saw the arrangement, he felt that it was no wonder that high-ranking leaders were best not to travel around, because no matter where they went, it would put enormous pressure on local security.
I guess everyone will have to work overtime, and I don't know if there will be overtime pay or bonuses.
It's a pity that the security personnel on the perimeter were all in plainclothes and hidden in the crowd, otherwise she would have definitely invited them to dinner.
However, she quickly forgot about it.
The reason she and Ivan got along so well was largely because they had the same illness.
To put it simply, they were both pretty bored and often did things that outsiders would find incredibly frustrating.
For example, their pastime right now is guessing which of the tourists, citizens, and waiters in the crowd are plainclothes officers.
The two even made a bet.
As for how to reveal the answer, Wang Xiao really wanted to ask the security chief from the Chinese side.
But Ivan is, after all, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister, and he has some self-respect; he can't let others know just how boring he really is.
So in the end, they decided that Lyuba and Nikolai would vote together to decide.
To ordinary people, plainclothes officers wouldn't notice anything amiss.
But for experts, a quick glance is enough to guess the truth, and a closer look will provide further evidence.
Then the tragic thing happened: she made five bets with Ivan and lost all five of them!
When they were playing cards, Ivan was just as bad as her, with pretty low skill and bad luck.
Ivanov laughed, unable to hide his pride: "Of course, I deal with them every day. They even train me on what situations might lead to assassination, where those people are most likely to hide, and what position I should stand in for maximum safety."
He spoke with a smug look on his face.
When he looked down again, he was horrified to find that Wang's eyes were red and wet.
Startled, he exclaimed in a panic, "Hehehe! What's wrong, darling? Are you feeling unwell?"
Wang Xiao reached out and hugged him tightly: "You've worked so hard, Ivan. I've been making you take such big risks all this time."
Ivanov paused for a moment, then hugged her back and gently comforted her, "It's okay, I feel fine, there wasn't much danger."
He had already stated that he would not run for president, and people were more willing to bring him on board as prime minister, so there was no need to assassinate him.
Although the Chechen problem has never been completely resolved, it has suffered a crushing defeat from the very beginning, so it has not been able to gain much traction even today.
As for the others, although they had grudges against each other, they didn't necessarily want him dead.
So it's alright! He doesn't regret becoming the deputy prime minister.
What he probably didn't know was that even if he regretted it, Wang Xiao wouldn't let him leave, because they were life partners, and now he had to stay in that position.
Yes, that's how domineering Boss Wang is.
She patted Ivan hard on the back. "Good job, we can continue to team up."
————————!!————————
Note: According to Dr. Lin Benjian's own account, in early 2000, I received a call from Manager Yan Taonan (who was working at TSMC at the time and is now the Global Vice President of ASML), asking if I was interested in coming to TSMC to take over a research and development department for lithography. I found this a bit puzzling. It would have been more reasonable for someone of a higher rank than the department head to ask me this. What was even more unusual was that he asked if I was over 50 years old, as this was a requirement. I told him not to worry, as I was already 57. He then explained to me that it was Vice President Chiang Shang-yi who had asked him to make the call. If I was interested, Vice President Chiang would call me personally.
At that time, Leadcore sold some of its products to Taiwan, and TSMC was one of my clients. I had a very good impression of TSMC and the TSMC engineers I interacted with, so I told him that TSMC's invitation was worth considering. A few days later, Vice President Jiang called me to inform me that he was going to set up two departments, one responsible for chip lithography and the other for photomasks. Yan Taonan would be the manager in charge of chip lithography, and Lin Jinxiang would be the manager in charge of photomasks.
I've met and interacted with both of them. I think they're very suitable candidates, and I believe that placing the photomask and chip lithography in the same place is very visionary. Chip imaging and photomask imaging have many similarities and can complement each other; they should be promoted together. Vice President Chiang's idea is very forward-thinking. He then invited me to TSMC for an interview.
I said okay, I could go in May. He said that was too long and asked what I'd been busy with lately. I explained that I was going to California on February 27th to attend an international microfilm conference hosted by SPIE. He suggested that after the conference I could fly west to TSMC, with TSMC covering all the airfare, which would also save me the cost of the Florida-California flight. I thought that made sense, so I adjusted my original plan and went to TSMC for a meeting on March 6th.
Besides Vice President Chiang, who invited me, the people from TSMC who interviewed me included General Manager Tseng Fan-cheng, Vice President Tso Ta-chuan (Operations), Director Sun Yuan-cheng (R&D Integration), and Director Liang Meng-song (R&D Module); as well as two department managers, Yen Tao-nan and Lin Chin-hsiang. The interview went smoothly. Some of these interviewers had heard me speak, some had taken my classes, and some were former colleagues from IBM. Only Vice President Chiang was someone I didn't know before.
The next day, Vice President Chiang asked me about my impressions of the past two days and invited me to become a senior department head at TSMC. He told me about the salary, stock options, and signing bonus, and explained that he wanted me to come for an interview because I needed to join TSMC within April; joining later would delay my stock dividends by a year. At the time, I didn't think much about receiving stock options. Then, another senior department head arrived in May. His office was next to mine, and he was also a Christian. We later became good friends, and I realized that Vice President Chiang was indeed right.
