Lu Chen ignored him and sat back down with Ye Zhiyu.
"Li Dazhu, what do you mean? Didn't you see that someone else was bullying me? Why are you apologizing? How could I have married such a good-for-nothing like you?"
Seeing that she couldn't get anything out of them, the woman vented all her frustration on the men.
"Honghua, it's your fault..." the man was still trying to persuade her honestly.
The woman named Honghua slapped her.
"Shut up! Did I ask you to speak? You good-for-nothing! If you weren't so incompetent, I wouldn't be bullied like this. I must have had the worst luck in eight lifetimes to marry you."
Her voice was high-pitched, and the entire carriage was filled with it; she kept repeating the same few sentences.
Being humiliated by his wife in public seems to be a common occurrence for men. The two children clung tightly to their father's legs, their eyes slightly red, pursing their lips to keep from crying out and causing trouble for their father.
The woman wasn't satisfied with just scolding the man; when she saw the two children, she didn't hold back in scolding them either.
"And there are two little beasts, just like you. You can't even fart after being beaten three times. I'm their mother, but they always side with that old hag. You ingrates."
People enjoy watching the two sides argue.
One-sided insults can be amusing, but it depends on the situation.
It's obvious that the woman in their family is the one who dominates the household, which is fine, since even an upright official can't settle family disputes. But scolding the child is going too far; no matter what, the child is innocent.
"You're awake. Stop talking! Are you ever going to shut up? I'm going home for the New Year, and you've ruined my good mood. Try yelling again. I'm just like that guy from before; I don't have a habit of hitting women."
A kind-hearted man spoke up and even showed off his fist.
Only then did things quiet down, but the woman continued to stare at Ye Zhiyu with a vicious gaze, occasionally throwing a disgusted look at her husband.
Ye Zhiyu just doesn't understand this person's thought process. She didn't provoke her or cause any trouble, but she still has to come looking for trouble. It seems like she even hates her now.
I got up too early this morning and didn't get enough sleep.
Ye Zhiyu yawned.
Lu Chen supported her waist and said gently, "Tired? Go upstairs and get some sleep. I'll go to the dining car later and see what good food they have, and I'll buy you some, okay?"
"good."
Ye Zhiyu nodded and climbed up to the top bunk to sleep.
Seeing that she had fallen asleep, Lu Chen took out a Chinese textbook and started reading.
When Ye Zhiyu woke up again, she was a little disoriented and didn't know what year it was.
He rubbed his eyes and stared blankly for a long time.
Oh, still in the car.
I slowly sat up in bed and stared blankly into space.
When Lu Chen returned with the lunchbox, he saw Ye Zhiyu with a tuft of hair sticking up and staring blankly, looking adorable.
"Ayu? Dinner's ready."
Ye Zhiyu's eyes flickered slightly as she gathered her chaotic thoughts and got out of bed.
The little leather boots were at the bottom, making it difficult to put them on when going down the ladder, but the ground was very dirty, so Lu Chen lifted her down by the waist.
I put her on the bed, knelt down, and put the boots on her.
"Don't you have hands? You need others to serve you. This isn't the old society."
That woman started babbling again.
Lu Chen didn't speak, and Ye Zhiyu looked at her like she was crazy.
"Are you sick? We're getting married soon. It's our business whether my husband is willing to take care of me or what society has to do with it. We're both willing to give and receive. What, are you jealous?"
The woman's teeth were practically shattering; she couldn't think of a rebuttal.
As the Lunar New Year approached, the bus was mostly filled with couples and families.
"Look at her, she won't even pour me a glass of water normally."
"Hey, hey, honey, I was wrong, I was wrong, my ear is going to fall off."
Another couple experienced the same thing.
"You say it's shameful for a man to serve his wife? You're kidding me! If I ever ask you to do anything again and you keep making excuses, just try it."
The man muttered to himself, "You don't even look at what other people's wives are like, and what about you?"
"What did you say?"
"No, I didn't say anything. I didn't say anything. I'll listen to you from now on."
"That's more like it."
Ye Zhiyu and Lu Chen exchanged a smile.
Lu Chen was enveloped in happiness. A Yu said that we would be getting married soon, my A Yu.
The food on the dining car was quite good. Lu Chen's portion was braised pork and scrambled eggs with tomatoes. Knowing that Ye Zhiyu didn't like fatty meat, he bought her chicken nuggets and shredded potatoes.
"These are lean meat pieces, you can have them."
Ye Zhiyu actually eats a lot, but she just can't gain weight, giving them the impression that she's malnourished.
After all, people nowadays believe that fat people are blessed.
The lunchbox was large, and she couldn't eat anymore after eating half of it. It was enough for a girl's appetite, but Lu Chen felt that she ate too little.
However, I didn't force her. I finished off the rest of the food, took out some snacks, coaxed her to eat, and even made her some malted milk powder.
The woman opposite watched Lu Chen greedily as he took things one by one, her resentment reaching its peak.
Why is it that, even though they are both women, she can only marry a farmer for basic necessities, while others can live such good lives?
Her husband, Li Dazhu, who was standing next to her, saw her expression, opened his mouth, and then closed it sadly.
When Lu Chen went to wash the lunchbox, he followed him.
The two men were washing dishes when Li Dazhu suddenly spoke up: "You two are very happy."
Lu Chen found him somewhat inexplicable.
"My wife was a sent-down youth in the countryside in 1970. When I first saw her, I thought she was quite pretty, but I never expected anything to happen between us..."
The man, however, began to tell his story on his own.
When Honghua first went to the countryside, she looked down on these peasants and even loathed them.
But when you go to the countryside, the first thing you need to solve is the problem of food and clothing; you need to be able to support yourself.
But she couldn't manage it; her work points weren't enough to eat, and in less than two years, she had become emaciated and pale from hunger.
She wanted to marry someone with better conditions, and she set her sights on the village secretary's son because he was a worker with a secure job.
But she wasn't interested in him, and she also had her childhood sweetheart.
She jumped into the river in front of him, hoping that he would save her and they would have physical intimacy. He would have no choice but to marry her.
But things didn't go as she wished. The man left, and she got a leg cramp in the water because she was too excited. She could have come up, but she sank down little by little.
Li Dazhu happened to be passing by and quickly rescued the person.
And so, Honghua was forced to marry him.
Knowing that she didn't have feelings for him, Li Dazhu felt indebted to her and tried his best to treat her well.
They wouldn't let her work in the fields, cook, or wash her clothes. They would beat and scold her as they pleased, believing that one day she would see the good in them.
But so many years have passed, and they've had two children, yet they're still the same.
His own mother suffered at his hands every day, and many times he really couldn't go on, but when he looked at his two children, he felt that the children couldn't live without their mother.
