Chapter 19 What a lousy man!

Their village had only recently distributed land to individual households, and their family had just received their share, so naturally they were very motivated.

After all, in the past, when people earned work points, the main thing was that as long as you showed up, you would get paid. Whether you worked hard or not, people couldn't tell.

But now it's our own land, every penny we earn is our own, so how can we not work harder?

Therefore, most of the time, if there is work to be done in the fields, most people working in the fields at noon will not go home. They will either bring some dry food to eat or have their families bring them some food.

This can save a lot of time.

Ding Meixiang instructed Yan Honglan to bring them food later, and also said that if the second son Yan Qiuting came back, Yan Honglan should ask Yan Qiuting to do some work.

As for Yan Dongdong, he went to school early this morning, bringing rice to cook at school, and he won't be back for lunch.

Yun Duoduo remembered that Yan Junting seemed to have mentioned yesterday that he was going to town today to find someone to buy tickets, but she had fallen asleep in a daze.

She nodded to Ding Meixiang, "Mother, I understand. You can go about your business."

Ding Meixiang nodded, picked up her hoe, and went out.

The atmosphere at home was quite harmonious this early in the morning.

Yun Duoduo had just gotten up and wasn't that hungry, so she didn't immediately go to the kitchen to find something to eat. Instead, she went to Yan Honglan and watched her make clothes.

Several unfinished garments lay beside Yan Honglan, her sewing machine clattering away busily. Yet, she still remembered to ask Yun Duoduo, "Sister-in-law, what would you like to eat for breakfast? I'll make it for you."

"I'll make breakfast myself," Yun Duoduo thought. She could just get some food from her space later; she had bread, milk, and all sorts of things.

Yan Honglan was too busy to spare any time at the moment, so she smiled at Yun Duoduo and said, "Okay, there are still a few buns in the kitchen that your older brother has kept warm for you. Just make do with those, and I'll cook you something delicious for lunch."

"I need to finish these two garments. My master wants me to deliver them today, saying that someone is waiting for them tonight," Yan Honglan said, pointing to a pile of clothes on the small table beside her.

"Your master?" Yun Duoduo tried her best to recall if there was anything about Yan Honglan's master in the book.

She quickly remembered that there was such a person, but he wasn't a very kind person.

Master Yan Honglan received many clothes that the villagers wanted made, but they were all given to Honglan to make. In the end, however, he was the one who received the money.

Yan Honglan assumed Yun Duoduo didn't know who it was, so she simply said, "Yes, my tailor, Master Zhao, from your village."

Yun Duoduo remembered that this person was a mean and sarcastic person with a bad reputation in the village.

But seeing how much respect Yan Honglan seemed to have for her master, she didn't say it directly. Instead, she pointed to the pile of clothes and deliberately asked, "How much money will you get for these clothes you made for your master?"

Upon hearing this, Yan Honglan smiled and waved her hand, "These large pieces of clothing were taken by the master, and I didn't get any money."

When Yan Honglan said this, her eyes dimmed slightly, as if she wanted to say something, but she shook her head and lowered her head to press the sewing machine again.

Just as Yun Duoduo was about to speak, an impatient voice suddenly came from outside, "Honglan, have you finished making the clothes my father asked you to make? Didn't you say you would send them over first thing this morning? Why haven't I seen you yet? I had to come all the way here."

As soon as he finished speaking, a young man ran in from outside.

Seeing the young man in front of her, Yun Duoduo frowned slightly.

The boy was probably in his early twenties, quite good-looking with delicate features, but he had a bad temper; he spoke as if he were arguing and was extremely angry.

Yan Honglan, who was operating the sewing machine, seemed frightened when she heard the sound, and her whole body visibly trembled. She forced a smile and greeted him, "Qingshan, you're here."

The boy named Qingshan glared at Yan Honglan with annoyance and frowned, saying, "Of course I came, otherwise what you saw was a ghost."

Upon hearing this, Yan Honglan bit her lip, glanced quickly at Yun Duoduo, feeling somewhat embarrassed, but still unsure how to retaliate.

Yan Honglan still felt wronged, but she was used to being scolded by Zhao Qingshan, so she accepted it.

She immediately lowered her head and went to operate the sewing machine. Her hands and feet were clearly a little flustered, probably because the pressure from Qingshan was too great for her.

Qingshan, completely oblivious to his own shortcomings, walked straight to Yan Honglan's side. After looking at the two garments Yan Honglan had finished, he began to scold her again, "Didn't I tell you? These aren't any fancy clothes. Single-stitched seams are fine. Double-stitched seams would waste so much thread, and they're so slow. How can you be so dense..."

Qingshan kept scolding Honglan, as if he was dissatisfied with everything about her.

Seeing the man muttering to himself in front of her, Yun Duoduo narrowed her eyes slightly.

Green Mountain? What a pathetic man!

Yun Duoduo remembered that the book mentioned Yan Honglan, whose husband was named Zhao Qingshan, the son of her master, who also made clothes.

Because they were of similar age and often made clothes together, they developed feelings for each other, and Yan Honglan married Yan Qingshan when she turned 18.

However, Yan Honglan, who married Zhao Qingshan, was not happy.

Zhao Qingshan has a bad temper and is even prone to violence. When he is in a good mood, he treats Honglan quite well, but when he is in a bad mood or drunk, he verbally abuses Honglan, which later escalated to domestic violence.

In addition, Yan Honglan later gave birth to two more daughters and had no sons, so Zhao Qingshan treated her even worse.

In any case, Yan Honglan's married life in the book was anything but happy.

From this perspective, Zhao Qingshan's change didn't happen after marriage; rather, there were signs of it before marriage. Judging from his temperament, he wasn't a good man.

Moreover, Yun Duoduo also knew that the Zhao family was very mean and always made Honglan do unpaid labor.

They mostly took tailoring jobs from the villagers, but they handed over these village tailoring jobs to Yan Honglan. They would travel around and help other people make clothes, which earned them more money and included room and board.

The problem is that Yan Honglan made these clothes in the village, but they were the ones who collected the money.

That's it. He didn't even express gratitude. Instead, he took it for granted that he was Honglan's master and it was only natural for him to make Honglan do some work.

Or say that Honglan and Qingshan are dating and don't care about such things.

In fact, Honglan had been learning for over a year and had already mastered almost everything she could learn. Moreover, she had paid tuition fees while learning the craft, so she should be charged for it.

Yan Honglan is a good girl. She is beautiful, hardworking, capable, and has a good skill. Marrying her to Zhao Qingshan is a waste.

Yun Duoduo sat to the side, unable to bear it any longer. How could Yan Honglan be so foolish, being manipulated like this? She probably really doubted whether she had done something wrong.
