Before Yan Junting could finish speaking, Yun Duoduo whispered to him, "Let him play here. When Honglan comes back later, I'll take him to help Honglan make dinner."
Yan Junting was naturally unwilling, but since the brat wouldn't leave, he had no choice but to let him go. He then carried the starter and went down to the ground himself.
Yan Junting served in the army for several years and rarely came back, but whenever he did, he would help with farm work.
After Yan Junting left, Yun Duoduo hugged Yan Dongdong and asked him very seriously, "Dongdong, is this really the first time you've seen me? Haven't you seen me before?"
Yan Dongdong kept staring at Yun Duoduo.
At that moment, Yun Duoduo almost held her breath, hoping for a miracle.
But after a while, Yan Dongdong shook his head and told her with certainty, "I've never seen you before, I didn't know you at all."
Hearing this, Yun Duoduo was somewhat disappointed, but she still asked him persistently, "So you've always been in the Yan family?"
Yan Dongdong immediately giggled, "Yes, I am a child of the Yan family. If I'm not in the Yan family, where would I be?"
Looking at Yan Dongdong's serious expression, it didn't seem like he was faking it.
Besides, what could a six-year-old pretend to be? It seems like it's just a coincidence.
Yun Duoduo was somewhat disappointed.
Perhaps Yan Dongdong just looks like his younger brother.
However, the child is indeed very cute, and they seem to have a special connection. Plus, the child is Yan Junting's younger brother, so they're practically like his own brother.
Yun Duoduo treated him like her own younger brother, as compensation for not finding a younger brother in her previous life.
What she overlooked was that while she was in a daze, a complex emotion flashed in Yan Dongdong's eyes.
Afterwards, Yan Dongdong played with Yun Duoduo for a while. Suddenly, he remembered something, took out a piece of candy from his pocket, and handed it to Yun Duoduo. "Sister-in-law, here you go. This is the last one. I didn't even give it to my brother."
Yun Duoduo laughed, took the candy, unwrapped it, and stuffed it into Yan Dongdong's mouth, saying with a smile, "Tomorrow I'll take you to town and buy you some delicious milk candy, okay?"
Yun Duoduo remembers that White Rabbit milk candy had already been released by this time, but it was a bit expensive and most families couldn't afford to buy it.
However, it wasn't a luxury for her; she had money.
Upon hearing this, Yan Dongdong was overjoyed and immediately nodded with a smile, "Okay, thank you, sister-in-law. It just so happens that there's a market in our town tomorrow..."
Yan Dongdong told Yun Duoduo a lot about the fun things that happened at the market. Yun Duoduo found that Yan Dongdong spoke very logically and was much smarter than the average six-year-old.
Moreover, Yan Dongdong was born at the beginning of the year, and is almost seven years old now.
At this age, a seven-year-old child should be in school; it's not during summer or winter vacation, nor on weekends.
Yun Duoduo asked him, "Dongdong, why didn't you go to school?"
Yan Dongdong shook his head while sucking on a candy, "Mom said that we don't have any money at home this year, so I have to postpone my studies for another year."
Upon hearing this, Yun Duoduo frowned, "What's going on? School can be postponed...?"
She didn't say anything more, but lowered her head and asked Yan Dongdong, "Do you want to go to school?"
"I..." For some reason, Yan Dongdong hesitated for a moment, then looked up and nodded at Yun Duoduo, "I want to, I really want to. All my friends have gone to kindergarten, and they say school is so much fun."
Yun Duoduo looked at Yan Dongdong and felt that the little guy was a bit strange. He said he really wanted to go to school, and his expression and tone showed that he really wanted to, but his eyes were very indifferent, as if he didn't have much interest in going to school.
However, when Yun Duoduo asked him again, he acted as if he really wanted to go.
Yun Duoduo thought the child probably hadn't realized it yet, but no matter what, if he didn't start school at this age, it would be a waste of his time. Her younger brother had missed a year of school because of family issues.
So, not wanting to hold Yan Dongdong back, she pulled Yan Dongdong aside and said, "Okay, then you can go to school too, and your sister-in-law will pay your tuition."
After saying that, Yun Duoduo saw that it was still early and there should still be teachers at the school. Since the school was right at the entrance of the village and not far from her home, she took Yan Dongdong directly to the school.
In rural schools, the admission process is not so strict. As long as tuition is paid, students can attend school, and Yan Dongdong is of school age.
Yun Duoduo paid five yuan for Yan Dongdong's tuition and spent another five yuan to buy some books and notebooks. She then told the teacher that she would be going to school the next day.
On the way back, passing by the village's grocery store, Yun Duoduo bought Yan Dongdong pencils, erasers, and a schoolbag, spending another five yuan.
This casual expense amounts to fifteen yuan; no wonder Ding Meixiang doesn't want Yan Dongdong to go to school—the tuition is indeed expensive.
Yan Dongdong carried his little schoolbag on his back, filled it with books and notebooks, and looked very proud of himself, eager to go back and show it off to his family and friends.
Yun Duoduo followed behind him, looking at his small body, and felt a sense of satisfaction, as if she had made up for her own younger brother.
Yan Dongdong was eager to show off to his friends, so Yun Duoduo took him for a walk around the village. They bought some food at a small shop in the village, and then played in the back mountain for a while. By the time they got home, it was already evening, and the Yan family had all returned.
From afar, Yun Duoduo saw Yan Junting waiting by the door, smoking and constantly looking out onto the road, looking very anxious.
As soon as he saw Yun Duoduo and the others return, he stubbed out his cigarette and quickly walked over.
