The ghost market wasn't small. In the dimly lit environment, each stall had a lamp hanging on it, and the white paper lanterns had numbers written on them, probably the stall numbers.
The pale light couldn't illuminate much area, and with the occasional cold wind blowing by, the swaying lights, combined with the strangely shaped indigenous people around, made Zhang Baye feel a little uneasy. He hadn't felt it when watching the live stream, but now that he was actually there, Zhang Baye felt somewhat panicked.
With two silver coins he had gotten from the cat in his pocket, Zhang Baye quickly set his sights on a small stall.
This is a junk stall, displaying many not-so-new human props.
Zhang Baye was aiming at a folding knife on the grocery stall. It looked like the metal of the knife was a bit rusty, which was as if it was enchanted. One slash would probably give someone tetanus.
Of course, she certainly wouldn't tell the stall owner this.
On the contrary, this is still a direction Zhang Baye can use to bargain: "Boss, how much is this?"
The stall owner was a two-headed humanoid monster whose head looked like it had been split open. Veins bulged on the left side of his head, and half of his brain was exposed on the right side. He would twitch as he spoke: "This is a folding knife, fifty silver coins each."
"So expensive? Why don't you just rob someone?"
Zhang Baye was startled, but he didn't rush to put the knife back: "Your knife is rusty. Is the blade made of silver or the handle? It's worth at most a silver coin."
"Kid, you're haggling way too much. This is a knife that fell from the human side, after all. It can't hurt any ghosts or monsters, but it can be a collectible. A collectible, you know? Artwork is worth this price." The stall owner, with a blade of grass dangling from his mouth, was nonchalant and didn't take Zhang Baye seriously at all. He was practically saying, "If you don't buy it, there are plenty of others who will."
"At most two silver coins."
Zhang Baye took out his only two silver coins, slapped them on the stall with a very generous attitude, then picked up his folding knife and turned to leave.
Seeing that Zhang Baye was about to leave, the stall owner didn't even try to stop him, but calmly reminded him, "You don't have enough money."
After all, the "Market Guide" explains it very clearly:
2. To ensure fair transactions and prevent fraud, theft, or other acts that disrupt the normal order of the market, all monetary transactions must be completed under the supervision of the "slippery ghosts." Taking goods out of the market without supervision will be punished.
[5. If the buyer does not have enough currency during the transaction, the seller is obligated to remind the buyer of this. If the buyer insists on continuing the transaction, the seller may choose the buyer's limb as tokens to continue the transaction process.]
However, what the stall owner didn't expect was that Zhang Baye's bigger purpose than buying things was to test his black talent.
"one two three……"
Listening to the stall owner behind him coldly counting numbers, Zhang Baye had a rough idea in his mind: he was waiting for him to be punished by the rules.
"...four, five."
The moment Zhang Baye took her fifth step, an unnamed fire suddenly ignited on her body, spreading along the ground towards the stall owner.
The eerie aura emanating from the flames startled the stall owner, causing him to stand up abruptly, but he was powerless to stop the fire from gradually encroaching.
"You! Are you deliberately picking a fight?"
The stall owner was so frightened that he couldn't help but scream, which made Zhang Baye, who was also watching the flames, pause for two seconds before running away.
The situation with the stall can wait and see, but if any law enforcement officers arrive, I won't even have a chance to run away. It's best to slip away first, since what I did was practically forced buying and selling.
After running to a bend, Zhang Baye stopped to check his condition.
The flame seemed to be coming from her own body, but she didn't feel any "heat" at all; instead, she felt a chill for a moment.
The flames were a ghostly green, possessing a beauty reminiscent of burning copper ions.
As for the cost...
Zhang Baye squinted and touched his entire body. He didn't feel any missing arms or legs. It seemed that although he had broken the rules, the flame had burned away the connection between the rules and himself.
Returning to the general store, Zhang Baye watched from afar and saw the stall owner complaining to the stall owner next door with his hands on his hips: "...You have no idea how strange that little girl was! She stole my goods and didn't even lose an arm or a leg! Not only did she run away, but she also set me on fire. Luckily, the fire went out before I got there. When that slippery fellow comes along, I'll give him a good talking to!"
"..." The stall owner next door whispered something, but Zhang Baye couldn't hear it.
"What are you talking about? Where is my price too high? It's always been this price! Human goods are only for collection and appreciation. Is it wrong for me to sell art at this price?" The stall owner's two heads sang together loudly, making the stall owner next door cover his ears.
It seems everything is alright.
Zhang Baye did not stay there any longer, but returned to the entrance and looked at the "Market Guide" again.
You wouldn't believe it until you look again; Zhang Baye immediately noticed the difference between the before and after.
The text on the paper regarding the fifth rule had a faint, scorching quality, as if it had been burned. The characters were no longer as clear as they originally were, and there were some light brown burn marks on the paper.
Although the paper wasn't burned directly, it was still quite obvious.
It seems that [Hellfire] only affects the rules themselves. Whether it is the Chosen Ones or the natives, there is no harm from contact with Hellfire. Moreover, this talent is a passive skill, which shattered Zhang Baye's dream of becoming a mage by creating a fireball on the spot.
