The man's voice was strong and clear.
"impossible!"
"Yun-ge'er is going to have a big job soon. If I follow him, I'm sure I can make some money. When that happens, I'll definitely marry you in a grand and glorious way!"
Hearing this conversation, Lin Daiyu, whose face was still flushed, couldn't help but be a little dazed.
Bai Sang let out a cold laugh.
"Just you wait, girl, they won't make it."
She said in a low voice.
Lin Daiyu was somewhat puzzled.
Bai Sang did not explain further.
The two returned to their lodgings, which was a side room where more than a dozen maids lived.
While they were chatting, Bai Sang also figured out that they were basically maids who worked in the kitchen and garden.
Bai Sang and Lin Daiyu were the two who worked in the kitchen.
Here, Bai Sang also heard a familiar voice.
"Xiaoxue, we need to go clean the theater area tomorrow. Shall we go together?"
The girl called Xiaoxue was the one who cooked for people at the opera house.
"Okay, we'll get the road cleared tomorrow morning and then head over."
The girl who helped them wash the dishes was named Xiaoyue.
"You two need to be more observant tomorrow. You don't need to do anything else, just wash the dishes."
Bai Sang nodded quickly.
"Thank you, Sister Xiaoyue."
The sky gradually darkened.
That night, amidst the hustle and bustle, Bai Sang couldn't sleep at all, and happened to meet Lin Daiyu's open eyes.
The two wanted to go for a walk, and then they saw Xiaoyue quietly leave the house.
"You filthy hussy, so slow."
The one speaking is today's old woman.
"If you do everything well tonight, I'll allow you to go home and visit your family in the next few days."
Xiaoyue managed a weak smile.
"Thank you, ma'am."
Bai Sang and Lin Daiyu followed silently.
Finally, Xiaoyue entered a secluded courtyard.
Lin Daiyu was quite excited, as this was the first time she had encountered something like this.
She followed them and discovered that it was a group of people gambling.
Xiaoyue served tea and water to the servants.
Things were initially going smoothly.
But after one side lost and became enraged, Xiaoyue was also slapped and pushed away.
Xiaoyue, whose clothes were torn apart; a gambler who was blinded by losses; and a gambler who was overjoyed with his win.
Cries and pleas for mercy came from inside the house, along with the excited laughter of the men.
"Still a virgin, hahaha, still a virgin."
"Take your turn, what's the rush?"
"Damn it, I lost, I go first."
"Get lost, I'll come first if I win."
Xiaoyue's cries were mixed in, sounding somewhat weak.
"Please, please, let me go! Let me go!"
"You, you're already with Xiaoxue, why, why..."
Lin Daiyu suddenly stood up.
"Xiaoxue? She's practically begging to come to me. It's her good fortune to have her."
"What, you don't really think I would marry a maid who sweeps and cleans?"
A burst of laughter erupted.
"I'll call Xiaoxue out tomorrow and let you all have some fun. How about that to cover my bets tomorrow?"
"Bang!"
The door opened.
Bai Sang followed Lin Daiyu and strode inside.
"Oh, two more have come to our doorstep, though they're a bit young."
"Isn't it all the same once you take your pants off?"
The foul language was unbearable to hear.
Lin Daiyu's eyes are slowly turning black.
It looked quite terrifying in the candlelight.
"You two, get out of here! Get out of here!"
"Don't touch them, they're too young. I'm willing, I'm willing..."
Bai Sang kicked away the man who came to pull her away, helped Xiao Yue up, and straightened her clothes.
Water stains spread all around Lin Daiyu's feet.
Her black hair was also among them, spreading out in all directions.
Each strand of black hair, upon touching a man, would gently wrap around his neck before being cleanly and decisively snapped off.
Xiaoyue was stunned.
Until there was no one else alive in the house besides the three of them.
"Don't be afraid."
Bai Sang thought for a moment, then spoke up.
"us……"
"You'd better get out of here! If they find out, they won't let you get away with this!"
Lin Daiyu suddenly smiled, walked over and squatted down.
"And you?"
Xiaoyue was stunned for a moment.
"I want to go back and see my brother."
"I've already given my aunt the money for this month's medicine. As long as my brother is alright, that's all that matters."
The money Xiaoyue spent on medicine when she brought it home was enough for her frail and sickly younger brother to live on until he was fourteen.
The fortune teller said that the fourteen-year-old brother would be completely cured.
When that time comes, he can go out and find a job, and then he can live a good life.
Stepping out of the side courtyard, Xiaoyue saw Xiaoxue, who was crying uncontrollably in disbelief.
The four of them climbed out through the dog hole.
Xiaoyue had served the Jia family for generations, and her residence was not far from the Jia family mansion.
A tiny courtyard, and a small main house.
"What should we say if that girl comes back in the next few days?"
The woman spoke in a low voice.
"What are you afraid of? Just say you met a famous doctor who can cure that short-lived ghost and get more money in return."
The man was indifferent.
“It has to be you, sir. Okay, then I’ll find that straw mat under the eaves tomorrow, wrap it up for him, and bury it near the ancestral grave.”
"Why bury children in ancestral graves? Children who haven't reached adulthood shouldn't be buried in ancestral graves."
Xiaoyue stood at the door, speechless for a long time.
When she spoke again, tears streamed down her face.
“My brother is gone, but they didn’t tell me. They just want me to keep sending money home.”
