John's years managing the family business have not been without their challenges. He has frequently traveled the world and encountered dangers, inevitably resulting in some hidden injuries to his body.
Since taking Ye Weiwei's pills, the area on his arm where he had previously been injured and fractured has been feeling warm for the past two days. It used to be sore and painful, especially when the weather was cold and the temperature dropped.
But after taking the pills for only two days, he clearly felt that his old arm injury had improved a lot, and he felt much more relaxed.
Even Creek could clearly see that his mental state had been exceptionally good these past two days, and he no longer said that he had been deceived.
Ye Weiwei gave John a nonchalant smile, as if she had known this all along and it was no surprise.
Remain unmoved by favor or disgrace.
John was even more convinced that Ye Weiwei was the legendary reclusive master.
"Ye, could you manufacture another batch of those pills? I'd like to buy some more to take back to China."
John revealed the ultimate purpose of his invitation, and Creek, standing beside him, looked at Ye Weiwei with anticipation.
Ye Weiwei shook her head helplessly, "I'm sorry, if possible, I would also like to make more, but unfortunately, good medicinal materials are hard to come by. For pills like these, the requirements for the medicinal materials used are particularly strict. Even a slight difference in age will greatly reduce the efficacy."
Crick, standing nearby, grew anxious. "Ye, I can offer more money, how about ten thousand per pill?"
Ye Weiwei's expression was serious: "Crick, this isn't about money. As a doctor, I must be responsible for my actions."
Knowing he had misspoke, Creek quickly apologized, and John also stepped in to smooth things over. He exchanged contact information with Ye Weiwei and asked her to give them priority if she had any more pills like that.
Unable to refuse Ye Weiwei's earnest invitation, she reluctantly agreed.
After the meal, the train conductor escorted them back and invited them to his office to discuss the matter of the more than 50,000 foreign currency.
I didn't rush to talk about it before because I was worried about what might happen with the medicine. Now it seems that my worries were completely unnecessary.
"Comrade Ye, Comrade Huo, what do you plan to do with these 50,000+ foreign currency? If needed, I'd be happy to help exchange them."
Ye Weiwei looked at Huo Xiao, signaling him to make the decision.
Huo Xiao said, "Then we'll have to trouble the train conductor. It is indeed a bit troublesome for us to carry so much foreign currency."
Upon hearing their agreement, the train conductor immediately exclaimed happily, "No trouble at all! You're contributing to our country's foreign trade; that's a great thing!"
So, Huo Xiao and Ye Weiwei went back to the carriage. Ye Weiwei pretended to take the more than 50,000 foreign currency out of her bag but actually took it out of her spatial storage and gave it to Huo Xiao. Huo Xiao took it to find the train conductor. When he came back, he had an extra receipt in his hand. When the train arrived at the terminal station, he took the receipt and went to the bank with the train conductor to conduct business.
After another day and night of bumpy train travel, we finally arrived at our final destination, Northwest Ning City.
After getting off the train, Ye Weiwei and Huo Xiao went with the train conductor to the Ning family's People's Bank to exchange foreign currency.
Upon seeing the large amount, the staff immediately reported it to their superiors.
The bank's leaders met with them privately. After hearing the train conductor's account of what had happened, and after checking the conductor's credentials as well as Ye Weiwei and Huo Xiao's letters of introduction, they happily helped them with the transaction.
When Ye Weiwei left the bank, she had a savings book with more than 130,000 yuan in her hand and a large stack of foreign exchange certificates.
Hearing that the two were going to visit relatives, the train conductor was very kind and arranged a car to take them to the town they were going to.
It took Ye Weiwei's parents more than five hours to travel from Ning City to the township where they had been assigned, and that was even with a direct route. If they had to transfer, it would have taken much longer.
It takes about three or four hours to walk from the town to the farm.
With so much luggage, it's impossible for the two of them to walk.
Huo Xiao found a quiet place to put down his luggage, and then went to inquire if there was a bus to April Farm.
They were lucky; there happened to be an oxcart going to April Farm. Huo Xiao and Ye Weiwei, along with their three large bags of luggage, paid five cents, and the driver agreed to take them there.
On the way, Huo Xiao took out a cigarette and offered it to Grandpa Zhang, who was driving the cart. Grandpa Zhang took it, smelled it, and his eyes lit up. He carefully put the cigarette in his pocket and then chatted with Huo Xiao about the April Farm.
Hearing that the two were visiting a friend at the farm, Grandpa Zhang sighed, "People like you are rare. Those locked up over there are all here for reform, I don't know what they did wrong, there are even little kids. What can such little children understand!"
Few people come to visit throughout the year. There was an accident a couple of days ago; I heard someone died. They said they couldn't go on living like this and hanged themselves in the night. When they were found in the morning, their bodies were stiff. Every year for the past few years, people can't take it anymore; they either go insane or die. Every year, several are found in the ditch behind the farm…”
Grandpa Zhang was a chatty person, and he told Ye Weiwei and Huo Xiao a lot about things on the farm along the way.
When Ye Weiwei heard about the death at the farm a couple of days ago, her heart clenched, and she wished she could sprout wings and fly to the farm immediately.
She kept reassuring herself that the book said her older brother had injured his leg and didn't survive the winter, so the one who hanged himself probably wasn't her older brother!
Huo Xiao noticed Ye Weiwei's nervousness and anxiety, so he held her hand tightly and whispered to comfort her, "Don't worry, Mom and Dad will be fine."
Ye Weiwei nodded absentmindedly, using her mental energy to explore the familiar surroundings along the way, trying to distract herself.
Finally, as dusk fell, we arrived at Daqiao Village, which is next to the farm.
They had already discussed it with Grandpa Zhang on the way. The two of them would stay at Grandpa Zhang's house for the next few days, and he would pay them 50 cents a day for the room. If they ate at his house, he would give them food.
Mr. Zhang has only one son and one daughter. His wife passed away two years ago, and his daughter married into a neighboring village two months ago. The family has four rooms, and they live in the room that Mr. Zhang's daughter used to live in before she got married.
Grandpa Zhang's son and daughter-in-law both seemed kind-hearted. They were happy to hear that they would be paid 50 cents a day to stay, but their expressions turned sour when they learned that the children wanted to visit friends at the farm.
Ye Weiwei and Huo Xiao pretended not to see it.
It's dark now, so it's not realistic for them to move to another place. They can only make do for the night, and if there are any problems, they'll find another place to stay in the village tomorrow.
In the evening, Ye Weiwei and Huo Xiao gave Zhang Daye's daughter-in-law some food, ate some dinner with them, and then washed up and went back to her room early.
Although they were both exhausted from the day, neither of them felt sleepy.
