Chapter 30 Seizing an Opportunity at the Scrap Yard

"Grandma, those bastards are gone." An eleven or twelve-year-old boy helped an old woman with gray hair out of the alley.

The boy was beaten black and blue, blood was still flowing from the corner of his mouth, and his ill-fitting clothes were tattered and hanging on his body. He was so thin that he looked like a gust of wind could blow him away.

"I wonder who benefited from those things."

The boy felt heartbroken when he realized that it was the last possessions the grandmother and grandson had left.

The old lady sighed, "It's better for whoever benefits than for those scourges. Even if we escape this time, the two of us don't have the ability to keep those things. Without this source of trouble, those people won't keep targeting us anymore."

The boy knew his grandmother was right, but the thought of their family having no money or food, and his grandmother needing money for medical treatment filled him with sorrow.

"Every cloud has a silver lining," the old lady said, patting her grandson's thin shoulder. "Being alive is more important than anything else."

The boy nodded. "Grandma, I understand."

Once the old man and the young man had walked far away, Ye Weiwei came out of her spatial dimension and followed them from a distance.

The grandfather and grandson lived in a dilapidated courtyard not far from the alley entrance.

Ye Weiwei and the other two went inside. After thinking for a moment, she took out a black plastic bag from her spatial storage, filled it with rice (about ten pounds), and also filled it with a bag of flour. She quietly placed the bag at their doorstep and then threw a small pebble into the yard.

The boy was startled and quickly came out. He saw two bags at the door, and when he looked at them, he was shocked and his eyes widened. He then quickly carried the two bags into the house, closed the door, and showed them to his grandmother.

The old lady held the white, fragrant rice in her hands, tears streaming down her face with joy. "Rui-ge'er, we've met good people! Remember what Grandma said earlier? Every cloud has a silver lining; this is our blessing!"

Young Luo Rui nodded vigorously, his eyes reddening.

With this food, he and his grandmother could eat sparingly and wouldn't have to worry about going hungry for at least a month.

This is the life-saving food for the two of them, grandfather and grandson!

Ye Weiwei listened to the conversation between the grandmother and grandson inside the room, feeling a mix of emotions.

She already knew where the grandmother and grandson lived. At worst, she could find an opportunity to bring them some food when she came to town in the future, so it wouldn't be like getting something for nothing.

However, after making this windfall today, Ye Weiwei suddenly remembered Ye Wanwan's experience of finding bargains at the scrap yard in the book.

Since the two of them are now irreconcilable enemies, there's no reason to leave this opportunity to her.

So Ye Weiwei rode her bicycle to the scrap metal recycling station.

The old woman who guarded the scrap metal yard didn't even bother to lift her eyelids when she saw her coming; she simply pointed to the wooden sign hanging on the wall.

Old newspapers and books cost one cent per pound, small household items cost two cents to one dollar, and large items cost five cents to ten dollars.

Prices for special items vary.

Ye Weiwei thanked her, took a handful of melon seeds from her pocket and gave them to the old woman guarding the gate, saying with a smile, "Auntie, I left my bicycle outside. Could you please keep an eye on it for me while I go in and pick out some old newspapers to paste on the wall?"

The old woman's eyes lit up, and when she saw that Ye Weiwei was such a pretty young girl, she beamed with joy. "Go ahead, go ahead! Don't worry, I'll watch over this bicycle for you, no one will dare to steal it!"

"Okay, thank you, ma'am."

The scrap metal recycling station was just a few large warehouses, filled with all sorts of random things.

Ye Weiwei remembered that the book described how Ye Wanwan found a mahogany eight-immortal table among a pile of old furniture. Under the tabletop was a hidden compartment containing gold bars and jade bracelets and pendants of good quality.

Two packets of Yuan Shikai silver dollars were hidden in the armrest of an ornately carved reclining chair.

A dozen or so small yellow croakers were hidden inside one of the table legs.

There are more than twenty gold leaves hidden in a scroll.

...

Looking at the messy pile of household items, Ye Weiwei thought that without some special skills, it would take a lot of time to find the treasure.

Just as Ye Weiwei found a carved recliner, she suddenly heard a gasp.

"Ye Weiwei! What are you doing here?"

Ye Weiwei calmly put the items on the armrest into her spatial storage, then turned around and looked unhappily at the people standing behind her.

Finally, her gaze fell on Tung Chee-hwa, and she sneered, "Why can't I be here? What's with that look on your face, like you've seen a ghost?"

Tung Chee-hwa's face turned pale and then red, and he couldn't say anything for a long time.

Isn't that like seeing a ghost in broad daylight?

At this moment, Ye Weiwei, dressed in a beige dress and with her clothes spotless, looked no different from a white-clad female ghost in Dong Jianhua's eyes!

His head was buzzing, and he didn't dare to look Ye Weiwei in the eye. He stammered, "I... I was just surprised to see you here. You... aren't you very rich? Why would you come to a place like a junkyard!"

Ye Weiwei rolled her eyes. "Do I need to report to you where I come from? Is it illegal for rich people to come to a junkyard?"

"No...no..." Upon hearing the words "illegal," Tung Chee-hwa panicked even more.

I always felt that Ye Weiwei's words had a hidden meaning, a veiled message.

“Weiwei, Brother Dong didn’t mean that. He just didn’t expect to run into you here.”

Ye Wanwan quickly stepped in to smooth things over and act as a peacemaker.

Ye Weiwei scoffed coldly: "Then please, Brother Dong, don't be so jumpy next time, especially behind me! After all, we're not close."

Tung Chee-hwa, his face grim, shut his mouth and remained silent.

Ye Wanwan smiled and changed the subject, "Weiwei, what are you looking for here?"

Her gaze fell on the recliner that Ye Weiwei had just been touching, and she walked over and reached out to touch it as well, then smiled and said, "This recliner looks really nice, Weiwei, would you like to buy it too?"
