As soon as Liu Guilan and Ye Weiwei entered the house, they saw Huo Xiao collecting bed sheets in the yard.
Liu Guilan scolded, "I don't know what strange habits this brat has developed in the army. He's washed the sheets three times this week. He's even more fussy than city people!"
Huo Xiao blushed deeply, feeling somewhat embarrassed to look Ye Weiwei in the eye.
Ye Weiwei smiled with an innocent expression.
I'm still young and don't understand anything.
When Su Xuemei saw Ye Weiwei arrive, she greeted her with a smile, "Weiwei's here! Come in quickly! Dinner will be ready soon. Go wash your hands and rest for a while."
Ye Weiwei greeted everyone with a smile, took out a small ceramic pot from her basket that could hold two servings of braised pork, and then took out twenty large meat buns and went to the kitchen. "Sister-in-law, these are what I bought from the state-run restaurant to add some dishes to the family."
When Su Xuemei saw the ceramic pot full of braised pork and the bag of large meat buns, she quickly waved her hand and said, "No need, no need, you can keep these for yourself. We don't need to eat such expensive things."
Ye Weiwei shoved the things into her hands, saying, "If you don't accept them, I won't dare to shamelessly come here for meals again."
Su Xuemei was so frightened that she quickly hugged the ceramic pot, afraid that it would fall to the ground and break. It was a pot full of meat, and it was braised pork from a state-run restaurant.
She dared not decide to keep these things herself, so she looked at her mother-in-law, Liu Guilan.
Liu Guilan was surprised that Ye Weiwei would bring so many nice things just for a meal. After thinking for a moment, she told her eldest daughter-in-law to accept them, saying, "Weiwei is so thoughtful. Don't do this again next time."
She felt sorry for Ye Weiwei because of the money.
How much money must all these nice things cost!
Judging by Weiwei's spending habits, I wonder if the third brother's meager earnings will be enough to support her.
But looking at Ye Weiwei's delicate skin and pretty face, Liu Guilan felt that this girl deserved to be raised with such fine things.
It seems I'll have to let the third brother sneak up the mountain a few more times to get some wild game and produce.
When dinner was served, Liu Guilan first gave Ye Weiwei two large meat buns and a bowl of braised pork, and then picked up a few green vegetables. "Weiwei, you must be hungry after walking such a long way back. Eat quickly."
Ye Weiwei looked at Liu Guilan's kind smile, then at the overflowing bowl of braised pork in her bowl, and felt a headache coming on. That bowl of pork must have been almost half full.
This is blatant favoritism.
However, none of the other members of the Huo family present showed any dissatisfaction. Even the younger ones did not cry or make a fuss, but waited expectantly for Liu Guilan to distribute the meat.
After the last pot of braised pork was divided up, Liu Guilan ended up with the fewest pieces, only two left.
"Auntie, how can I eat so much?" Ye Weiwei divided the braised pork in her bowl into several pieces for Liu Guilan, and then gave one piece to each of the children.
"You silly child!" Liu Guilan immediately objected when she saw that Ye Weiwei only had three or four pieces left. She tried to put them back on Ye Weiwei's plate, but Ye Weiwei stopped her. "This is enough. I already ate lunch. It would be too greasy to eat so much at night."
Liu Guilan didn't believe it.
Ye Weiwei repeatedly said that she really didn't want to eat anymore, and Huo Xiao also told Liu Guilan not to keep refusing, so Liu Guilan finally gave up.
"You can never get tired of eating meat! Don't be stingy with yourself, a girl should treat herself well."
Ye Weiwei smiled, her almond-shaped eyes narrowing into crescent moons. "I understand, Auntie."
Liu Guilan felt pleased as soon as she saw Ye Weiwei's smile. She then turned to the others at the table and said with a stern face, "You all got to eat braised pork and big meat buns at the state-run restaurant today because of Weiwei. You all know what's going on. If anyone dares to be an ingrate and bully Weiwei in the future, I'll break their legs!"
Su Xuemei was the first to speak up, "Mother, don't worry, I would never do anything to betray my own mother."
Liu Guilan glanced at her eldest daughter-in-law with satisfaction, then glared at her second son, Huo Jiang, with a hint of annoyance.
Huo Jiang touched his nose sheepishly, shrinking his head to try and make himself less noticeable.
He also had a lot of headaches about marrying such an unreliable wife.
Ye Weiwei noticed movement behind the house and quickly probed with her spiritual power. She found someone lying on the back wall of the Huo family's house listening to the noise. This person was none other than Sun Hongying, who had snatched three fruit candies from Xiaochun and her sister that day and had a big fight with Liu Guilan, and had been sent back to her parents' home.
After leaving that day, Sun Hongying lingered on the road for a long time, but no one came after her. She was furious and went straight back to her parents' home.
She distributed colorful fruit candies to her three nephews from her maternal home, hugged and kissed them affectionately, and then, not daring to say that she had been kicked out by her husband's family, she made up an excuse that she missed her nephews and wanted to go back to her maternal home for a few days.
At first, Sun's mother was quite happy. "You're doing the right thing. If you treat your nephews well now, they will be filial to you in the future. Your womb is useless; you haven't given your son-in-law a son who can carry on the family line. In the future, you'll still have to rely on your nephews to take care of you in your old age and see you off when you die!"
Sun Hongying nodded vigorously, "Mom, I understand."
Sister-in-law Sun carried a large pile of dirty clothes that she had changed out of at home into the yard and shouted to Sun Hongying, "Auntie, you wash these clothes for your nephews."
"Yes!" Sun Hongying replied as she rolled up her sleeves and sat down in the yard to wash clothes.
After washing the clothes, I cleaned the yard and tidied the kitchen, fetched water to feed the pigs and chickens, and cooked. After most of the day, I was busy like a spinning top.
During the meal, the entire Sun family sat around the table, while Sun Hongying sat to the side, eating a bowl of thin porridge with only a few grains of rice, her face beaming with happiness.
While eating, Sun's mother was still brainwashing her daughter, "Today, your eldest nephew Xiaowen came to see you and said that your aunt loves rice porridge the most, so we made this at home. We would never dare to eat such expensive things on ordinary days. Only your eldest nephew is so filial to you."
Sun Hongying looked at her eldest nephew with emotion.
It's only her own nephew who knows how to care for her. Unlike those good-for-nothings at home, who cry and whine when she tries to give them a few pieces of candy. They've raised a bunch of ungrateful wretches!
Sun Xiaowen glanced at his aunt with disdain, then lowered his head and continued eating.
His aunt is getting more and more useless. This time she came back with just a few fruit candies. With just a few candies, she has the nerve to stay at home and eat and drink for free!
"Grandma, I heard that my aunt's younger brother-in-law hunted down two big wild boars in the mountains a couple of days ago. The meat was distributed to the whole village, and my aunt's family got the most. Why didn't my aunt bring us even a scrap of meat back this time?"
"What? Your brother-in-law went up the mountain and hunted down two big wild boars?" Upon hearing this, Sun's mother's eyes widened immediately. She slammed her chopsticks on the table and glared at her daughter through gritted teeth: "Where's the meat?"
Sun Hongying looked flustered and almost dropped the bowl in her hand. She lowered her head under her mother's gaze.
"The meat was all eaten up..."
