Chapter 75 Wasteland
Xu Miaomiao was thrown to the side and half-knelt to steady herself.
The county magistrate standing by was laughing, as if he was enjoying Xu Miaomiao's miserable appearance.
Hearing the laughter, Xu Miaomiao seemed to be motivated and ran over to hold down the angry and howling horse.
The horse's neck was held tightly, and it roared in dissatisfaction and struggled hard, as if it wanted to throw the woman in front of it away. However, Xu Miaomiao did not give it this chance. She found the right moment to take off her coat and cover the horse's head with it.
Sure enough, the horse that had just been running wildly stopped immediately, avoiding kicking Xu Miaomiao again.
Xu Miaomiao came to her senses, stepped on the saddle and sat on the horse, but the horse still stood still.
Xu Miaomiao patted the horse gently with one hand and carefully took off her coat with the other.
The horse that had just been running wildly was suddenly calmed down.
The county magistrate looked at Xu Miaomiao suspiciously, and then asked the yamen runner beside him in confusion: "Could it be that this horse has really been tamed by her?"
Just when everyone was suspicious, the horse began to bark wildly again and roared at the sky.
Xu Miaomiao's body was unstable and she was about to be shaken off. In the critical moment, she quickly put her coat back on the horse's head.
After going back and forth several times, the horse finally calmed down, as if it obeyed Xu Miaomiao and let Xu Miaomiao drive.
"County magistrate, this horse has been tamed."
Xu Miaomiao shouted to the people on the stage while riding on her horse, like a tall female general on a mighty horse.
Hu Chong was startled by her appearance, but after recovering from his shock, he looked at Xu Miaomiao and said, "No, you are riding on it, so I can do it too."
Hu Chong looked at Xu Miaomiao with dissatisfaction. He didn't want to lose such a fertile land.
Xu Miaomiao frowned and looked at Hu Chong with dissatisfaction: "Then according to your opinion, how can I be considered to have successfully tamed the horse?"
"You have to at least ride it across that track." Hu Chong pointed proudly to the track next to him. The fence there was very high and it was impossible for an ordinary horse to pass through, let alone someone like Xu Miaomiao who had just tamed a horse.
"Okay, then let's do as the county magistrate says." Xu Miaomiao said.
Hu Chong leaned back in his chair proudly. He wanted to see how Xu Miaomiao would be thrown off the horse and kneel down to beg for mercy in front of him.
But the expected handover did not come. Xu Miaomiao tightened the reins and jumped over it safely. Then Xu Miaomiao jumped over several fences before it was over. She patted the horse under her and thought, "This is such a good horse!"
"Hmph." Hu Chong shook his hands impatiently and prepared to leave, but then he remembered something and said to the horse breeder, "Poison this ungrateful horse to death!"
The horse breeder did not dare to disobey Hu Chong's order and could only nod regretfully.
"Wait." Xu Miaomiao looked at the horse in front of him with nostalgia and said to Hu Chong: "Sir, I like this horse very much. Why don't you sell it to me?"
"Oh?" Hu Chong became interested and asked the man carrying the chair to stop. He looked at Xu Miaomiao and slowly said, "This horse costs three hundred taels. Do you want to buy it or not?"
An ordinary horse only costs ten or twenty taels, and even a famous horse does not exceed a hundred taels. Hu Chong asked for three hundred taels, which was obviously a rip-off for her, but Xu Miaomiao looked at the color of the horse and nodded.
She took out three hundred taels of silver from her chest and said that she was willing to be the sucker today.
When Hu Chong saw that she was willing, he immediately sent someone to take the banknotes, carefully put them in his pocket and looked at Xu Miaomiao: "In this case, I will also give you the land I promised to give you."
As he said this, Hu Chong ordered the maid to bring the land deed over.
"Thank you, sir."
Xu Miaomiao took the land deed and took a look at it. She saw that it said "Water Land in the South of the Village". She couldn't help but feel confused. It was water land. Although the area was not large, it was good land. How could Hu Chong give me the land like this?
"Since you have taken the land, you can leave. I will not keep you for dinner."
As he said this, he shouted to the bailiffs to carry him away.
"Sir, why should such good water land be given to Xu Miaomiao?" The bailiff at the side asked in confusion.
Hu Chong shook his head indifferently: "It doesn't matter, it's not a good place. Besides, we got an extra three hundred taels of silver today, so it's our profit anyway."
As he spoke, Hu Chong took out the silver note from his chest and counted it proudly.
The yamen runner standing by also looked at the banknotes with shining eyes.
Xu Miaomiao rode the horse back home quickly.
When Erbao saw a horse for the first time, he ran out to have a look: "Before, I have only seen other people use horses to pull carts. From now on, we can use them too."
"Where did this horse come from?" Gu Yuanniang asked curiously.
Xu Miaomiao was combing the horse's hair and patted Erbao's head: "I bought it."
"Yes." Gu Yuanniang nodded, looked at the horse and said, "This horse looks like it will cost fifty taels of silver."
When Xu Miaomiao heard this, she said lightly, "Three hundred taels."
Gu Yuanniang was a little surprised: "Three hundred taels!"
He quickly stepped forward and pulled Xu Miaomiao, saying in disbelief: "Three hundred taels to buy a horse, Miaomiao, have you been cheated?"
Xu Miaomiao shook her head and pulled Gu Yuanniang into the house: "Sixth Mother, I was not deceived. This horse is priced at this price. Magistrate Hu bought it for me."
Then, Xu Miaomiao told everyone what had happened in the county magistrate's mansion.
"It's so abominable! How can a county magistrate be so untrustworthy!" Gu Yuanniang was so angry that she pulled Xu Miaomiao out of the house.
Xu Miaomiao thought that she was going to find the county magistrate to explain things, and was immediately frightened and stopped in her tracks.
"Sixth Lady, he is the county magistrate. It would be crazy for you to go to him to reason with him." Xu Miaomiao said, "Besides, I bought this horse willingly."
"Who said I was going to see the county magistrate!" Gu Yuanniang explained, "I'm not that stupid. I just want to go and see if there is any problem with this land and whether it is a good land."
Xu Miaomiao kept silent and left with Gu Yuan's mother. She also wanted to know what could be done with this land and whether she could grow something on it like she did with the cotton field.
But when she got there, Xu Miaomiao was dumbfounded.
It is a palm-sized area surrounded by bamboo forests, with a small pond in the middle that looks to be two meters deep.
Xu Miaomiao sighed. She now finally understood what it meant that you might make money but others will never lose money.
Gu Yuanniang also stood there in a daze. She reached out and touched the pool of water. Fortunately, the water was not too cold, so she could raise some fish or something.
"Miao Miao, it's okay. Although the place is small, we can make use of it." Gu Yuanniang thought Xu Miaomiao was a little discouraged, and immediately spoke out to comfort her.
"Yeah." Xu Miaomiao nodded and looked at Gu Yuanniang: "Sixth Mother is right, there must be a way."
She should have thought about it earlier, why would Hu Chong give her such a good piece of land?
But after taking a look at the horse in the yard, Xu Miaomiao felt relieved. Saving a life was not a loss at all.
