Chapter Fifty-Nine: Luring the Enemy
The Da Yuan army casually set up a loose, temporary camp using sleds. Qin Mo placed the Japanese soldiers at the front, while the elite Da Yuan troops were hidden. This served two purposes: firstly, they could be used as a surprise force, and secondly... who knew if this Cossack cavalry was the vanguard, or if there were more enemies nearby? Having watched so many war dramas, how could Qin Mo not know the importance of reserves?
The Kazakh cavalry stopped two miles away from the main army. Any closer and they would not be able to reach maximum speed before entering the range of the archers. Cavalry without speed is not cavalry; they are targets for archers and prey for spearmen.
Qin Mo's palms were sweating profusely. As a Xuan Realm expert, it was a disgrace to be nervous in the face of ordinary cavalry. But his heart was pounding uncontrollably. He didn't even need to turn his head to know that annoying Allen was silently mocking him. Damn it, everyone has a first time!
The two thousand cavalrymen lined up together put considerable pressure on the Japanese spearmen in the front ranks. Two thousand cavalrymen... How many cavalrymen did the Takeda clan, renowned for its cavalry, actually have? Now they were facing two thousand cavalrymen. Although they had several thousand cavalrymen on their own side behind them to bolster their courage, panic still spread like a plague.
Qin Mo didn't take any measures to boost their morale. Since the goal was to lure the enemy and feign weakness, the more realistic and natural the better. Using these two thousand cavalry to instill confidence in the main army was a strategy he and Wu Shengze had agreed upon. If they were scared off, how could they possibly pursue them across the vast mountains and plains?
Once these cavalrymen get close, the sharpshooters will shoot down all the Cossacks leading the charge, and then lead the charge into the enemy ranks. Given the density of cultivators in the large army, cutting through enemy ranks is a piece of cake.
But after waiting for a while, the Cossack cavalry did not launch a charge. Instead, a tall figure stepped out from the crowd, walked a mile away, and then roared madly at Qin Mo.
"What...is this thing?...Is it an orc?" Qin Mo's eyesight was too good. The tall figure was obviously not human. The green muscles, the wide nose, and the two long fangs created a strong visual impact on him.
“He was an orc general. Killing him would be a decent military achievement. Hehe, an unexpected gain,” Wu Shengze said with a relaxed laugh.
"How did you figure out he was an orc general? What's your basis for that? And what's he doing? Is he crazy?"
"Judging by their size, the length and color of their fangs, the orc generals can fight against cultivators at the Yellow Realm level, and those with exceptional talent can even defeat peak Yellow Realm experts. As for what he's doing... he's naturally challenging us, demanding a duel with our experts..." Wu Shengze explained to Qin Mo in detail. Although his young master was exceptionally talented and knowledgeable, he had never been on a battlefield and knew nothing about these kinds of miscellaneous facts.
"Then...should I go out and kill him now?" As the commander-in-chief, Qin Mo was very responsible; he would act when necessary and never back down. Of course, if the opponent were an orc warlord, he would consider asking Allen to cover for him.
“If you want to scare those Cossacks away, go and kill him. He’s just testing whether there are any high-level cultivators in our camp.” Allen finally couldn’t stand his sworn brother’s ignorance and tried to shut him up with a taunt.
"What a joke... I have over ten thousand people... and not a single high-level cultivator? Are all orcs idiots?" Qin Mo almost jumped up. This was contempt for him, contempt for the large army. He had to make them pay a heavy price.
“The He Jin you killed was a commander of an army with 20,000 to 30,000 men under his command, and he was only at the Profound Realm cultivation level. He was a border army. We look like a grain transport team. How high a cultivation level do you think we should be assigned to? The Yellow Realm is the best we can do.” Wu Shengze was patient, instilling battlefield knowledge in Qin Mo bit by bit.
The army of Da Yuan was far too bloated. During the daytime march, most of the warhorses were used in rotation to pull sleds, leaving less than a thousand cavalrymen as guards. This amount of guard force was far too meager for carrying such a large amount of military supplies. No wonder the Cossacks only had two thousand cavalrymen to try and take over this prize.
"You... put on your armor and go fight him... be careful... don't die..." Qin Mo stretched out her finger, walked over the bodies of several people around her for a moment, pointed at one of them, and said with some reluctance.
Kaihime stared at the tip of her nose... her slender fingers, her eyes glazed over... not understanding why it was her. It wasn't that she was afraid to fight, but rather that the orc opposite her disgusted her; thick saliva dripped from his long fangs... how could anyone fight like that?
"Don't misunderstand... This is a trap... Do you understand the trap? You can lose, but you can't win. The fight has to be realistic... Of course, survival is the most important thing... I'll have Allen watch over you." After Qin Mo finished speaking, Allen casually moved his finger towards Kaihime with a straight face, meaning, "Go ahead... I heard what you said."
Kaihime's large eyes welled up with tears. She knew Allen's identity and strength. How could she not be moved that Qin Mo had assigned a powerful Earth-level expert to support her? More importantly, Qin Mo was treating her as a warrior, not a maid.
Kaihime hurriedly went to put on her armor. After entering the Dao, she received a new set of armor, the kind only cultivators in the Grand Army were issued. The new armor had been personally modified by Ximan at the joints, making it more flexible and form-fitting. When Kaihime first received that armor, she polished it three times over. After entering the snowfield, she was scolded by Qin Mo and only then did she change into a fur coat. In his words... "Have you ever seen a personal maid wearing iron armor?"
