Chapter Ninety-Four: Clever People
The war drums began to beat, "Boom...boom...boom," the war drums of the orcs. Inspired by these drums, they were once invincible, sweeping across the Western Continent. It wasn't until those damned vampires, elves, dwarves, sea creatures, and others betrayed their promise and made peace with humanity that the orcs halted their victories.
For nearly a century, the Great Xia, this colossal empire in the East, has been quietly supporting the humans of the Western Continent, repeatedly sending powerful warriors to aid the Holy Temple in its fight against the orcs, causing heavy losses to the orcs of the Western Continent. The orcs were forced to reinforce their forces in the Far East in an attempt to contain this vast yellow empire.
As the war drums sounded, a large contingent of orcish allied forces began their assault on the city. The orcs dispersed among the Rakshasa in squads to avoid being caught in a concentrated barrage of catapults from the Great Xia army, but they couldn't be too spread out, or they wouldn't have enough impact.
A large number of catapults were deployed to the front lines to engage in a siege with those in the trading city. Over the long years of war, the Russians had learned a great deal from the Great Xia, including catapults and siege ladders. However, they could never match the superior weaponry of the Great Xia army. Their style was simple and brutal, using sheer numbers and the lives of their fearless soldiers to compensate for the technological imbalance.
The orcish alliance, without employing any fancy tactics, charged to the city walls amidst a hail of flying stones and ice. The frozen moat became useless, and the heavy siege ladders were easily pushed into position and placed against the city walls.
Joseph was lucky; the orcish troops he was with didn't push them to the front, but instead charged up the city wall by howling. A dense barrage of arrows immediately turned the first few orcs into pincushions. Even so, they still managed to cut down two Xia soldiers before falling.
The Great Xia army quickly dispatched a squad of armored warriors to resist, but ordinary soldiers were no match for the hordes of orc warriors. Burning rockets were continuously fired at the siege ladders, but this time the ladders had been doused with water beforehand, forming a thin layer of ice, making it very difficult for the rockets to burn.
Joseph followed the orcs up the city wall. He had to prove himself to his orc masters. Now that he was on the most dangerous part of the city, he was willing to risk his life to please the orc lords so that he could be promoted to captain and then cut rations from others to feed Yakov.
Kong Yue coldly stared at the orc warriors on the city wall, not engaging in battle. He was waiting; his target was the orc general. These were not even elite warriors, so there was no need for him to intervene.
Not all orcs were tall, elite warriors, nor did every tribe have enough food to raise a large number of elite warriors. Ordinary orc squads were quickly surrounded by the armored warriors of the Great Xia, and sharp javelins were hurled in continuously, causing orcs to fall in droves, and the Great Xia army also suffered heavy casualties.
Joseph sadly discovered that the orc lord, whom he had previously considered invincible, was not without his strength. Although the Xia army was shorter than them, their iron armor made up for the difference in combat power, and the Xia army was also more knowledgeable in battle formations.
No matter where the orc warriors charged from, several spears would always thrust forward simultaneously. The Great Xia army coordinated seamlessly, relentlessly slaughtering the orcs and Rakshasa.
The siege ladders behind them finally burst into flames, their retreat was cut off, and reinforcements could not get up. Joseph's force of less than a hundred men was now isolated. Although the archers below the city desperately supported his unit, and the makeshift ladders were also used to try to bring reinforcements up, the Xia army threw out grappling hooks and, with the help of a large number of crossbowmen, pulled down the ladders one by one.
Without reinforcements, the army could not last long. As both sides fell one after another, the Great Xia army went berserk. Finally, a cultivator charged into the orcs and began a massacre.
The most valiant orc captain was killed by that monk, and the remaining orcs and Rakshasa lost their confidence. With their morale low, they quickly collapsed. But with the Great Xia army on both sides and burning siege ladders behind them, where could they escape to?
“I surrender…I surrender…” The clear and resonant Xia language suddenly appeared on the city wall. Facing the spear formation that was right in front of him, Joseph finally threw down his weapon and shouted out the phrase that he had practiced so many times.
The Great Xia army opposite him paused for a moment, but didn't stop, charging towards him with their spears. Joseph's heart pounded; he didn't know what to do. Was he going to die here? Someone as intelligent as me...
Joseph suddenly dropped to the ground, the cold floor almost sticking his face to it, but he had to take the gamble, a gamble with his life at stake.
As heavy footsteps pounded on Joseph's back as he charged toward the Rakshasa men behind him, Joseph's eyes, which hadn't shed a tear in years, finally welled up with tears. He had made the right bet; the Great Xia army hadn't killed him, they just thought he was in their way.
There were still some clever ones. In the end, a dozen or so Rakshasa people followed suit, threw down their weapons, and lay down in unison. They were then tied up one by one by the Great Xia army and led to the city. Of course, they were constantly being punched along the way.
Kong Yue has yet to find a target to deal with. Several elite warriors have been dealt with by his subordinate captains. Several dangerous situations have occurred on the city walls, but the orcs have not committed enough high-level experts to break through the stalemate and have failed to gain any real advantage.
The orcs' retreat horn sounded again, and the few remaining orc allied forces on the city wall were unable to retreat in time and lost their reinforcements, and were finally all killed.
Joseph was taken out alone and soon met a Daxia man. Judging from his words and actions, the man seemed somewhat frivolous and arrogant, and his eyes were full of contempt when he looked at Joseph.
"Ask him what's going on in the orc camp?" Kong Yue said casually as he sat down in a chair.
