Chapter Sixty-Two: The Long-Awaited Reinforcements
The first battle since the Da Yuan army set out on its expedition has finally come to an end. This battle was planned and executed by the great Crown Prince Qin Mo, with the veteran general Wu Shengze in charge of overall command, and the noble elven warrior Allen delivering the final blow. The entire leadership team can definitely be described as "luxurious".
However, this battle, which mainly took place between Cossack cavalry and new recruits of the Da Yuan army, completely deviated from Qin Mo's plans and expectations, especially the final encirclement phase, which was... a complete mess.
The cavalry's horsemanship was rusty, and their formation was disorganized; the infantry, though their formation was disciplined, lacked combat experience, allowing Xinsa to break through and escape in the chaos, exposing the lack of real combat experience among the new generation of soldiers in the Da Yuan army. After all, out of ten thousand men, only a thousand had actually fought face-to-face with orcs.
Fortunately, the main force consisted mostly of armored soldiers, resulting in a very low casualty rate. After this medium-scale battle, both their morale and the soldiers' teamwork will improve significantly.
There were several highlights in this battle: Qin Mo's elite elven followers' superb archery skills; the veterans' initial use of formations to trap Xinsa with low-level cultivators and ordinary warriors; and Kaihime's risking her life to challenge Xinsa in an attempt to create the illusion that the enemy's army had no high-level cultivators.
Now, the most important trophy—Sinsa's head—was pointed out by Eren to Kaihime. Everyone stared at her with burning eyes, a mixture of envy and jealousy, but absolutely no contempt. Everyone felt that her performance deserved this military achievement.
Kaihime hesitated. She felt that the credit belonged to Allen, so why should it be given to her? Was it because she was Qin Mo's personal maid?
The warriors pursuing Xinsa were still holding up her large head, and everyone was watching her, especially the Fusang warriors, whose eyes were beginning to gleam with fanaticism.
Kaihime finally reached out and took the heavy head. She found a powerful reason for herself... For these Fusang warriors, they had left their homes and risked their lives for a chance at a future. They needed recognition and respect, and if she received affirmation, it would naturally be an affirmation of the value of the Fusang warriors.
She held the spoils high, letting all the Fusang warriors see them clearly. A thunderous roar swept over them, and Kaihime burst into tears. She... had achieved all her goals in coming to Daxia, and Xiuxiao had gained the same respect as men.
Kaihime held up Shinsa's head, displaying it to all directions, then knelt on one knee before Qin Mo and presented the head to her. She loudly swore, "Kaihime swears by the name of her ancestors that she will follow Your Highness to the death and never betray you."
"We swear to follow Your Highness to the death, never to betray you..." Everyone began to swear an oath to Qin Mo, including the Japanese who couldn't yet speak the Great Xia language fluently. ...Of course, Allen wouldn't swear an oath; he would always be a free man.
The roar of tens of thousands of people taking their oath pierced the sky and reached Li Fengyan's ears. She glanced back, her face expressionless, silently urging Qing Ning to speed up the march.
For the next few days, Qin Mo's army never encountered that old carriage again until they arrived at Maimai City.
Maimai City, located 700 li north of Ulan City, was expanded from the site of Kyakhta by nearly a million Rakshasa people driven by the orcs, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. Maimai City has high walls and wide ramparts, with watchtowers everywhere, and its magnificent aura can be felt from afar.
When Qin Mo saw this magnificent city, he couldn't understand how such a city could be attacked and eventually fall.
"It's very simple. The orcs didn't expect the Great Xia to attack at this time of year, so they were unprepared. For some reason, the Witch King defending the city didn't make a move. Ordinary orcs and Rakshasas alone couldn't stop the Great Xia's elite forces." Allen noticed Qin Mo's confusion and explained the status of high-level cultivators in war to him.
“When two armies clash, if both sides have equally strong warriors, it is easy for the battle to become a stalemate, with neither side able to gain the upper hand. If one side has no strong warriors, they must either surrender or retreat... or... kill them all,” Wu Shengze added.
Qin Mo sighed, "So these high city walls... were just for cannon fodder! The city walls can't stop cultivators at all?"
"Not entirely. High-level cultivators are a minority, and even fewer enjoy battlefield combat. The towering city walls pose a significant threat to cultivators below the Yellow Realm. Thanks to this fortified city, the orcs have killed countless soldiers of the Great Xia." Wu Shengze looked at the towering city walls of Maimai City and sighed deeply.
"Woo..." A long horn sounded, and figures appeared on the city wall, indicating that lookouts had spotted Qin Mo's group. The city gate then opened a crack, and a troop of cavalry rushed out, spreading out to cautiously search Qin Mo's direction. Only after seeing the Great Xia banner flying high did they quicken their pace and arrive before the army.
"Where...are you from...the supply battalion? Where are your soldiers?" The cavalry leader from Maimai City was a captain. He was completely bewildered when he saw the sleds dragging along in Qin Mo's army. He had never seen such a long transport convoy before.
"The Crown Prince of Heng has led a large army to reinforce us. We are not a supply battalion; we are all soldiers." Liu Renguang stepped forward to answer. The other party was just a captain, not worth Wu Shengze's attention.
"The troops of Prince Heng? Could they be the troops of Prince Heng, Prince Qin Lan?" The captain was clearly excited.
"Of course, this time our Crown Prince is leading the army. Go and report to him, and tell him to enter the city as soon as possible; the air is too cold." Liu Renguang puffed out his chest and proudly admitted. Although Qin Lan had died in battle, his reputation remained. The Da Yuan army was still a formidable force.
