Chapter Seventy Search Team
Carl carefully scanned his surroundings, not missing a single clue. This morning, he'd been assigned a dreaded task; the whole morning was almost over, and he hadn't even found a trace of the target, let alone completed the mission. But he remained calm, maintaining a standard search formation as he moved, his pace varying from fast to slow, cautiously searching before setting off.
Decades ago, the Great Xia Empire launched a surprise attack on Maimai City. As one of the lucky ones who escaped from the city, Karl always believed that he was able to escape death because of his caution, not his strength.
When the Great Xia army suddenly breached the city, while other orcs were shouting to block the breach, Karl keenly sensed that something was wrong. He did not feel the fluctuations generated by the battle between his own Great Shaman and the enemy's super strongman. You must know that the destructive power of a battle at that level is terrifying.
Karl made a decisive move, leading his people to retreat through the north gate. After they had fled for several miles, the trading city behind them was ablaze with flames, and the screams of the orcs echoed through the sky. Later, a few hundred more orcs escaped. According to them, the Great Xia army accepted the surrender of the Rakshasa, but slaughtered all the orc warriors.
Karl had no choice but to follow the others north to Ulan-Ude and join the ranks of King Bernullis. This was far enough from Maimaiti City that the Great Xia army wouldn't attack Ulan-Ude again during this cold winter, and Karl felt that he and his people should be able to get through the winter safely!
Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. As orc reinforcements continued to gather, Karl knew that the important figures among the orcs wouldn't be able to wait until next spring. They wanted to return to the city of Marshall as soon as possible to wash away their shame.
Karl's tribe wasn't large, numbering less than ten thousand, young and old. His strength wasn't great either; he was merely an orc general. In Ulan-Ude, this strength was barely enough to protect themselves, and the hard and dirty work often fell to their tribe.
This morning, Karl was leading his people in repairing their houses that had collapsed under the weight of the snow when his superior, Overseer Cabos, summoned him. When Karl saw the Overseer's gloomy face, he knew that trouble was brewing once again.
Sure enough, Overseer Cabos's first words sent a chill down Karl's spine: "Karl, have you heard about what's been happening outside the cities lately?"
“Your Excellency Cavos, I know a little bit. It seems that bandits have robbed our brothers.” Karl replied. This Overseer Cavos had a rather bad temper, and the various tribes under his command had suffered a lot.
“Bandits? You filthy idiots, would bandits only kill elite warriors and not take the mission spoils? Your Green Clan is a well-known tribe, how could you have such a stupid general like you?” Cavos suddenly went crazy, roaring at Karl, spitting large drops of saliva on Karl’s face.
“Respected Kavos, our Green Clan is located in a remote area, and naturally cannot compare with the glorious Twilight Hammer Clan. Please forgive my ignorance.” Karl did not dare to refute Kavos at all, and let the saliva on his face dry naturally, without even wiping it.
While the Twilighthammer Clan might not be considered a powerful force in the Western Continent, it was one of the strongest clans in the Far East. If he angered Cavos, Cavos could tear him apart without any punishment; King Bernoulli wouldn't reprimand the Twilighthammer Clan for his sake.
"Take the warriors of your tribe, and I'll send you a general. Go outside the city and drag that damned reptile out of here." With just one sentence from Cavos, Karl's fate was sealed.
"A reptile? Reports have come from several surrounding villages that so many elite warriors have died without even seeing what the other side was. How could it be a reptile?" Karl felt resentful but helpless. The orc clans were clearly hierarchical, and the weak Green tribe simply couldn't afford to offend the Twilighthammer clan, one of the honor clans.
"You're in charge of the rear of the column. Don't let anyone ambush us from behind, understand?" Karl said to General Gug, who was sent by Cavos. Gug was of even lower birth than Karl. His tribe didn't even have a name, and he only brought seven elite warriors. You can imagine how much value they had in the eyes of Overseer Cavos.
The two men and their men searched tirelessly all day, but to no avail. Several surrounding villages had been attacked, indicating that the damned "reptile" was clearly active in the vicinity, yet they couldn't find him. Looking at their exhausted men, the two men prepared to end the day's search and rest for the night at the Russian settlement ahead.
The vast northern lands belong to the orcs, but in terms of population, the orcs are less than one-fifth the size of the Rakshasa. The orcs have been able to rule the entire north through their overwhelming military power and bloody, oppressive policies. The Rakshasa have always lived in the shadow of the orcs.
"Cheer up, all of you! Hang in there a little longer, we'll rest at the rendezvous point ahead tonight!" With Karl's shout, the elite warriors' tired and listless appearance vanished, their eyes gleaming with excitement. They whispered among themselves, discussing the private topics between men.
Qin Mo watched as the approaching orc search party suddenly erupted into a commotion, and her heart skipped a beat. "Have I been discovered? No way..."
The Rakshasa settlement behind them was the largest village in the vicinity, and Qin Mo had carefully chosen an ambush point on the only road leading to the village. Whenever a search team was active in this area, they would most likely stop here to rest at night. After all, he hadn't attacked any Rakshasa villages, and unless the orcs were incredibly stupid or extremely arrogant, they wouldn't choose to spend the night in an orc village.
