Chapter Fifty-Five: A Hero

Chapter Fifty-Five: A Hero

The smugglers had chosen a small hill for Qin Mo to camp on, right next to the lake, making it easy to get water. The hill also blocked the north wind, making it an ideal campsite. But now, a lone figure stood between the lake and the hill, the narrow passage and his solitary form giving off a sense of "standing alone with a sword drawn."

Meanwhile, Qin Mo's personal guards crowded onto this side of the passage. They didn't rush forward to gang up on the other party, seemingly waiting for Qin Mo's decision before letting this guy know what it means to be in cahoots with the enemy.

"What happened? Why did you get into a fight with someone?" Qin Mo breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that the other party was indeed not injured. He also agreed with Kaihime's intuition. This carriage was indeed strange, and it was best not to provoke it if possible.

"Reporting to the young master, we came here to set up camp, only to find that they had already arrived, but they are blocking the road and preventing us from passing. I followed them, and we only occupied a small area, but they just wouldn't let us pass. They insist on monopolizing such a large area." After clasping his hands in a military salute, Liu Renguang, the head of the personal guards, reported to Qin Mo in detail.

Qin Mo glanced at the armored warrior blocking the entrance. She was still fully armored, with only her eyes showing. Even so, under Qin Mo's eyes, enhanced by Nirvana Flame, her curves were clearly visible. After all, elves are very sensitive to the opposite sex, and it was no problem for them to identify a woman with their discerning eyes.

The charioteer wielded a two-handed greatsword, her feet sinking into the snow. She was alone, but her imposing presence was no less than that of Qin Mo's dozens of personal guards. This alone was enough to tell that she was no mere figurehead; she was undoubtedly a skilled fighter.

Qin Mo hadn't paid any attention to this charioteer initially, her mind completely captivated by her phoenix eyes. Now, judging from the radiant energy emanating from her eyes, she should be a Yellow Realm cultivator. However, seeing the footprints she left in the snow, Qin Mo felt that her combat strength couldn't be judged solely by her cultivation level.

Her armor was ordinary, the kind of leaf-patterned armor commonly seen in the military, but it was unusually heavy, as evidenced by the deep indentations of her footprints in the snow. You see, unless you're in the Lin Realm, you'll always leave footprints in this kind of snow; even Qin Mo was no exception. Unless you're willing to expend your energy to levitate, you can naturally disappear without a trace in the snow. But who has the time to expend their energy like that?

A tough woman who could fight wearing extremely heavy armor and wielding an extremely heavy two-handed sword—Qin Mo felt she was no ordinary Yellow Realm cultivator. More importantly… a Yellow Realm cultivator working as a coachman—who was the person in the carriage? A fallen noble? Or was this coachman a bodyguard hired at a high price?

Qin Mo glanced behind her; there was no movement from the carriage. The other party clearly didn't want to reveal their identity, which suited Qin Mo perfectly. Everyone had their own path; it was best to ignore each other.

“She’s just a woman, so it’s not convenient for her to stay with us. Let’s find another place to camp. Let me know when you’ve set up the tents. I’m going to get some sleep first.” Qin Mo turned her horse around and headed back to the carriage.

"Young Master...we...two of our brothers suffered a loss...you see..." Liu Renguang, the head of the guards, said embarrassedly. He originally wanted to get revenge when Qin Mo came, but Qin Mo didn't care at all. How was he going to manage dozens of men under his command in the future...how could he not get revenge after suffering a loss?

Qin Mo glanced at the two guards whose clothes were covered in snow water; the snow stains were clearly marks from the heavy sword strikes. Helplessly, she said to the guards, "There are always people stronger than you. You always think you're strong and tough enough, but now you've met your match. They've already shown mercy, and you still want to gang up on them without waiting for a chance to retreat? Victory and defeat are common in war. Just practice more and come back to fight."

At this point, Qin Mo turned around and shouted to the female charioteer, "Hero over there, if you dare, leave your name! My brothers will definitely come back to pay you a visit when we've honed our skills!"

"This...this hero is named Qing Ning. I'm ready to fight anytime you want. Are you afraid of me?" The female charioteer didn't understand the tricks and Qin Mo easily tricked her into revealing her name.

Qin Mo ordered the camp to be set up a hundred paces away from the carriage, both to maintain distance and to deter wild animals in the vicinity. There are many wolves that come out to hunt in winter on the snowy plains, and being surrounded is a big problem. You have to stay alert and vigilant at all times. Unless you are strong enough to ignore the fighting power of the wolves, you will eventually be worn down by the tenacious wolves.

The situation was different at the military camp of the high-ranking officials. Even the hungriest wolves would not approach the camp to look for food. Their cunning genes, passed down through generations, taught them that if they came near, they would basically become food for others.

The high-ranking military sleds formed a large circle, serving as a fence. A dozen or so sleds were erected in the camp for surveillance and guard duty. The artisans' camp placed one of the sleds directly opposite the old horse-drawn carriage. Liu Renguang climbed up himself; he didn't plan to come down that night to see just who this woman named Qing Ning really was.

The hanging basket was designed by Qin Mo. It was quite spacious inside, but it was made of two layers of wooden planks filled with wool, which kept it warm and protected it from arrows. A cleverly placed iron stove was tucked into the corner, with the charcoal fire burning brightly. As long as the felt lid was closed, leaving only a palm-width slit for looking out, it would be a warm and cozy nest.

Liu Renguang took out the wine flask, took a sip, and felt the wisp of fire travel straight to his stomach. He then let out a comfortable burp. Carefully, he took out the telescope he had obtained from Kaihime from his bosom, held it up to his eyes, and looked at the tent next to the carriage.

This magical object was invented by the young master and has always been kept by his personal maid. Today, when he went to ask for the telescope, she resolutely refused to give it to him, leaving Liu Renguang only able to feel angry. After all, she had an affair with the young master! But when he said that he needed it to monitor this old carriage, the spirited Japanese woman changed her mind and handed the telescope to him, only instructing him not to let it fall into the hands of others under any circumstances.
