Chapter 316 Atonement
Although Kelly's expression was not good, she still suggested that Qin Mo keep one of the "maids" assigned to him by the temple, which made Xu Luo, who was standing next to her, very envious.
"They are actually holy servants, but they are being used as maids. Holy servants are meant to dedicate themselves to the temple. Qin Mo, you can enjoy them to your heart's content." Kelly said this with a double meaning as she left, making Qin Mo feel extremely embarrassed.
By the time Qin Mo came to her senses, the chestnut-haired girl had already taken charge of making her bed.
"May I have your name?"
"Lord Qin Mo, my name is Leif." The girl answered obediently as soon as she heard Qin Mo's voice.
"Oh! You... what do the servants of the saints usually do?"
Qin Mo felt the atmosphere was a bit awkward, so she wanted to chat with Winnie and also learn about the Riga Fortress through her.
“Sir, we can do anything!” Leif lowered her head and replied, blushing.
Qin Mo's face didn't turn red, but he was a little embarrassed. He knew for sure that wasn't what he meant to ask.
Looking at the long, straight legs faintly visible beneath the thin gauze dress, and at Leif's increasingly flushed cheeks, Qin Mo could only ask a question that would never be ambiguous: "Have you eaten?"
Leif clearly didn't understand this question, which had a distinctly Chinese flavor. She tentatively asked Qin Mo, "Does Your Excellency want to eat?"
Qin Mo touched her stomach and nodded.
Leif ran quickly out the door and returned a moment later carrying a large dinner platter.
Large chunks of beef, soft white bread, and a tin pot filled with wine, which was not encouraged in the temple.
Winnie cut the beef with a knife and placed it on the table with the bread, then sat obediently to the side.
Qin Mo keenly noticed Leif swallowing, so he pushed a plate in front of her and started eating on his own.
Kelef didn't dare to move until Qin Mo gave her an affirming look, then she began to swallow in small bites. Judging from her eating posture, she had obviously received special training, elegant and alluring.
Qin Mo poured her a glass of wine, but Leif shook her head vigorously, saying in a flustered manner, "My lord, only heroes who have slain orcs are qualified to drink wine. We will be punished for drinking."
Although the temple's doctrine does not forbid alcohol, it does discourage drinking. Qin Mo did not force Rave, but gave her some more beef, which instantly made Rave's eyes moist. She lowered her head to hide it for a long time.
A spring breeze blew in through the window, and the girl couldn't help but shrink back and shiver, which made Qin Mo feel very sorry for her.
Qin Mo tossed her a thick coat and gave her a commanding look, telling her to put it on. How could a thin gauze dress possibly ward off the chill of early spring? The Temple of Liga had really gone to great lengths to comfort the powerful warriors who had come to fight.
"Leve, how long have you been at Riga Fortress?" Looking at the girl's gradually rosy face, Qin Mo began to inquire about the situation at Riga Fortress.
“My lord, Leif has been here for three years.”
"Oh! Are you familiar with Riga Fortress? This is my first time here, so I need to get acquainted with people to avoid any unpleasant encounters. Do you... understand what I mean?"
Leif nodded to indicate that she understood, and then carefully began to explain to Qin Mo.
Riga Fortress has a standing army of 35,000, which is a very strong force in the Western Continent, where the population is far smaller than that of the East. In the spring, elite knights from various countries will come to reinforce it in order to deal with the orcish offensive.
The Temple is undoubtedly the highest leadership body in the entire Riga Fortress. Elder Ryan, a Saint-level expert of the Temple, is stationed in Riga Fortress year-round and also serves as the supreme commander of the Allied Forces.
The Riga Temple was the civil administration authority for the entire Riga defense zone, covering a radius of thousands of miles. From taxation to public security, everything was handled by the temple's subordinate branches.
The temple implemented a resource control system along the entire defensive line. All supplies needed within the orcish territory, such as food, cloth, and refined iron, were confiscated and then redistributed. Nobles were spared, enjoying some privileges. Commoners, however, were basically on the verge of starvation.
Anyone who dares to rebel against the Temple is a blasphemer of God and will be captured and brought into the Temple. Men will be used as cannon fodder, and women will become servants of the gods... or even worse.
Qin Mo looked at Leif, who had unconsciously started to cry, and didn't know what to say. In her previous life, she had a chauvinistic slogan: "War is a man's business and women are not needed."
However, when war comes, no one can escape it. Women will not receive any pity, and the weak are always at the bottom of the oppression.
“Lord Qin Mo, I am not a blasphemer of God. My father is a knight with a fiefdom. He spared a family of farmers who stole grain, but he was implicated. I have come here voluntarily as a holy servant to atone for my sins.” Leif suddenly remembered something and hurriedly explained to Qin Mo.
Looking at the anxious girl, Qin Mo nodded and asked gently, "Where is your father? Perhaps I can help you go home and reunite with your family." Qin Mo wasn't just saying it casually; all he had to do was take out a pair of orc general fangs, which would be enough to offset Leif's so-called "sins."
Leif shook her head blankly and murmured, "My father didn't want his family to be disgraced, so he joined the Knights of Light... and died in battle."
The Knights of Light may sound prestigious, but the fates of its members are tragic. They are knights who seek redemption, and they use their blood and lives to pursue the so-called "light."
