Chapter 9
Regardless of his age, Yoda was certain that it wasn't the right time for him to make the decision to get married.
Startled, he waved his hands repeatedly, uttering countless "no"s.
Yoda's mother suppressed her own burgeoning thoughts and comforted her, "I know young people these days don't think much of being a housewife, and I don't want you to be stuck at home after marriage. You could work at a trendy agency. It would be so nice for two people to be together."
Yoda thought about what it was like to work alongside Shi Xing, and still shook his head.
Yoda's mother: "You two used to be together all the time, didn't you?"
Yoda felt helpless. It was natural for the two of them to be together before. They were the same age, had similar grades, and eventually chose the same school and the same major, so naturally they were often together.
If things continue as normal as they go through school, exams, and employment, the two inseparable people will get married when the time is right.
But now, Yoda must face alone the unfinished studies, the uncertain job market, and all the life experiences he missed.
“The past is the past, the present is the present. Hey, it sounds like your brother is calling you.” Yoda couldn’t explain his vague thoughts, perhaps it was to avoid the risk of being judged and giving up at the beginning of his life plan.
"I'll go check on it. You should go to sleep early."
Seeing that his mother had finally left, Yoda flopped onto the bed. Discussing this topic was more tiring than reading.
"Isn't this a normal thing? Is it really worth keeping you tossing and turning all night?"
Xie Yiyi typed furiously on the computer screen, her fingers flying across the keyboard. She even managed to talk to Yoda while simultaneously working on the screen.
Yoda was shocked by what her mother said last night and couldn't sleep. Now, the only people she could talk to were Shixing and Xie Yiyi. Shixing was the center of attention, and Yoda felt a little shy about complaining to him about this.
I couldn't help but vent to Xie Yiyi in the middle of the night, and to my surprise, she replied instantly and we agreed to meet during the day to talk in detail.
Yoda wondered, "Am I too young? But you weren't asleep either, were you?"
Xie Yiyi glanced at the baby sleeping soundly in the stroller. "You don't understand, mothers with babies never get a full night's sleep."
Yoda: "Then why don't you stay home and rest? Taking the kids out is so troublesome, isn't it even more tiring?"
Xie Yiyi stopped what she was doing and looked up at the computer screen. "You still don't understand. Besides taking care of the child, I also have to do my job. This is what it means to balance work and childcare. What's a little tiredness? I've evolved to the point where I don't even need to rest anymore."
Just listening to it made Yoda feel exhausted for Xie Yiyi.
"If it's so tiring, then marriage and childbirth become a one-way street with no turning back?"
Xie Yiyi: "How could I regret it?" Pushing aside the computer, Xie Yiyi looked at Yoda: "Before getting married, I had enjoyed enough of my single life and was sure I could bear all the risks after marriage, so I chose to get married. After enjoying enough of married life as a couple and being sure I could afford the cost of raising children, I started trying to conceive."
"In short, making the choice to get married and have children may be more tiring than being single, but if you are well prepared, you won't have to regret it."
Xie Yiyi looked at the baby, and the warmth and gentleness in her eyes moved Yoda.
Do you think I should get married?
Xie Yiyi turned around and scanned Yoda from head to toe, making the man feel uneasy. "What's wrong?"
Xie Yiyi shook her head. "There's no right or wrong, it depends on whether you want to or not."
Yoda himself didn't know; it seemed like it should be, but it also felt a bit off.
Shaking his head, Yoda watched Xie Yiyi start working again, the sound of her tapping away echoing in his ears. He turned to see what she was writing, but before his eyes could even touch the screen, Xie Yiyi forcefully pushed them back down.
"Don't look."
Yoda's curiosity only grew stronger. "What are you doing? Why are you being so mysterious?"
Xie Yiyi zoomed in on the computer screen, glancing left and right to make sure Yoda couldn't see it. "Work, I'm writing a commentary article. Work confidential, no visitors allowed."
Yoda was speechless. "What's the secret?"
Xie Yiyi: "No, this is my habit. No one can see it. I can rant and rave in my articles, but if others know my real identity, how can I express myself freely?"
As if struck by inspiration, he leaned closer to the screen and started clicking away.
Yoda watched Xie Yiyi's expression shift from fierce to sinister, the reflection on the screen making it appear even more sinister. It certainly seemed like a very scathing critique.
Turn the baby, who had already woken up, opened his eyes, and was obediently sucking on his hand, to her side. "Baby is so good, look at Auntie, mua~~~."
"It's done." Xie Yiyi pressed send, finished her work, and stretched out her stiff fingers with her hands crossed.
Seeing the baby fall asleep after playing with Yoda, she gently took the baby, put the baby in the stroller, and whispered, "Do you want to come with me? I'll take you home."
Yoda shook her head and replied softly in return, "No need, my friend has booked a lecture by a famous designer for me tonight, and I'm going with her."
As he spoke, he pointed to Zhou Ying, who was walking over not far away. When she saw Yoda, she waved, and Yoda responded with a smile.
Xie Yiyi didn't insist any further. When she was younger, she didn't like other people getting involved in her good friends' lives. Now, she only hoped that Yoda could make new friends and be as happy as before in his new life.
However, as Xie Yiyi watched Yoda and the other man's figures gradually disappear into the distance, she felt that the man looked somewhat familiar.
After thinking for a moment, I couldn't recall anything. Looking down at the baby who was still fast asleep in the car seat, I whispered, "Baby, let's go home."
Inside the lecture hall, the designer on stage is a senior expert in the design field, runs a well-known design company, and is also an alumnus of the school.
Yoda quietly thanked Zhou Ying, realizing that he had been so busy with classes and keeping up with the schedule that he hadn't even noticed the lecture. He hadn't expected Zhou Ying to be even more attentive than him. Seeing people coming in and even sitting on the steps, he knew Zhou Ying must have put in a lot of effort to reserve a seat for him.
"You're welcome. There's another movie showing next week. I heard that the houses in the movie use a lot of modern and popular styles and elements, which are valuable for interior design. I've already bought the tickets. Hehe."
"Wow, I never thought we could learn from this angle. I'll definitely come next week. But, aren't you studying lately?" Yoda felt a little embarrassed that Zhou Yinghua had spent so much time helping him.
"I've already passed the exam, and now I'm free of worries. I'm also interested in this anyway. Don't worry about it, just think of it as you keeping me company," Zhou Ying said casually. After they finished talking, the lecture began.
Yoda's heartfelt gratitude could only be expressed in a grateful look as he turned to listen attentively.
Designs should have their own style and theme. As a designer, you usually choose a style you like. In-depth study will make it easier to develop your own unique style.
What style do you like? Yoda thought for a moment. Chinese elegance, European luxury, and modern minimalism all look comfortable. The recently popular industrial style also seems interesting. All styles are nice, it's really hard to choose.
As interior design has developed, its relationship with other disciplines has become increasingly close. For example, interior design and ergonomics, through the application of reasonable spatial dimensions, can make people's indoor activities healthier and more comfortable.
Yoda nodded in agreement. Indeed, advancements in other disciplines also drive the development of interior design. If more scientific and specific figures can be used in interior design for spatial layout and furniture placement, the comfort of living will certainly be improved.
Design is crucial for the people living in it; every design project must be analyzed specifically based on the user's preferences and habits. When designing, one should not only strive to create a masterpiece but also fully consider the needs of the users.
This is also Yoda's original intention in choosing design as his major: to make users feel satisfied and happy through his designs.
My design company is currently hiring. If you are interested, you can register after the lecture.
At the end of the lecture, seeing the crowd gathered around the registration area, Yoda casually filled in his name as well.
"Then it's settled. We'll get together next week, at the same time."
"Uh-huh"
After parting ways with Zhou Ying, Yoda remembered to check his phone. He hadn't been able to answer calls while indoors. Seeing Shi Xing's missed call, he called back.
"Tomorrow is the weekend, I'm off. Are you free?"
Yoda nodded quickly. Shi Xing's firm was very busy, with people working overtime every day. Yoda himself also wanted to learn as much as possible before graduation, otherwise he would be clueless about finding a job after graduation.
Both of them were very busy, and they had to make an appointment in advance to meet at a time that suited both of them.
He nodded, then realized the other person couldn't see him, and quickly agreed over the phone.
"Ah, I remember now," Xie Yiyi said excitedly on the other end of the phone. Last night, in a half-awake state, she finally remembered where she had seen that girl before.
I called Yoda first thing in the morning to make sure he got the important message.
“I saw her and Shi Xing struggling in the hospital before, it’s definitely not normal.”
Yoda: "Huh?" Yoda was momentarily unable to connect the two unrelated people.
Xie Yiyi said anxiously, "What do you mean 'ah'? You have to be careful. What if there's some special relationship between you and you're the only one being kept in the dark?"
Yoda wanted to explain further, telling Xie Yiyi that Zhou Ying had always been very good to her and didn't seem like there was anything going on. After saying so much, his mouth was dry, and he couldn't help but take a sip of his drink.
Xie Yiyi was furious at his lack of self-respect: "If there really is something between them, the better they treat you, the more suspicious it is, okay?"
“Things are different now. Before, you were bedridden and had no choice. Now, if Shi Xing does anything to wrong you, you can just walk away, kick him to the curb, and find someone better and younger.”
Yoda couldn't resist and choked on his juice.
A tissue was handed to him from behind. Shi Xing stood quietly behind him, his eyes deep, and it was unclear how much he had heard.
Yoda saw it was Xie Yiyi calling and immediately put it on speakerphone. It's a habit of his, since they're all very familiar with each other.
Just when Yoda felt guilty about turning it off, but also foolish to keep listening, Xie Yiyi seemed to think that Yoda's silence was an attempt to quell the situation and pretend not to know anything, and then she made a surprising remark.
"If it's true, you have to give me a share!!!"
