Chapter 18 The Young Lady in the Wheelchair 18: Wet

Chapter 18 The Young Lady in the Wheelchair 18: Wet

Xiao Liu put down his breakfast on the table and turned to speak.

"Miss, I've brought breakfast and medicine..."

But then Xi Congshuang looked up from the computer screen, raised a finger, and silently shushed everyone.

Xiao Liu immediately fell silent, and then Xi Congshuang waved her hand, and she quietly left without waking the person in bed.

After closing her laptop, Xi Congshuang wheeled herself over, quickly and silently finished her breakfast, picked up the medicine from the bottle cap, poured it directly into her mouth, and swallowed it with warm water.

She was already moving quickly. Cheng Zhishu, who was fast asleep, did feel cold and tried to pull her wrist, which was outside, back into the blanket. She also felt that the IV tube was cold against the back of her hand and wanted to rub it off with the blanket.

Xi Congshuang, who arrived just in time, grabbed her wrist: "Don't move, your hand will bleed back."

Cheng Zhishu stopped moving, her hands were pressed against the blanket, and she let out a faint groan.

He probably felt pain all over his body and his head hurt, so he couldn't help but groan softly.

Xi Congshuang also found it strange. When Cheng Zhishu was awake, she was very well-behaved and had a good temper. Xiao Liu and the others also liked to bring her some food from time to time.

A well-behaved child is always likable.

However, Cheng Zhishu, who was ill, was completely different; she would move around if she wasn't watched for a moment.

Dr. Qi said she hadn't been getting enough sleep these past few days, so don't wake her up yet; sleep is good for her recovery.

Now, Xi Congshuang looked closely at her face and indeed saw two dark patches under Cheng Zhishu's eyes, like a shadow covering them.

Not long after, Xiao Liu came up again to pack his things and asked Cheng Zhishu in a low voice if she needed anything to eat.

Xi Congshuang shook her head and told her to keep it warm and wait for Cheng Zhishu to wake up before eating.

Xiao Liu nodded and left.

Before closing the door, she glanced into the room and saw Xi Congshuang staring at the profile of the person on the bed, her eyes slightly lowered, seemingly lost in thought.

A few seconds later, she looked at the computer again, her brows furrowed slightly, maintaining the same posture as when Xiao Liu first came in: one hand covering Cheng Zhishu's hand and the other on the keyboard.

The door crack got smaller and smaller until it was closed.

Slender fingers slid across the touchpad, browsing through most of the computer's contents. While the phone had been broken and its contents hadn't been recovered, the computer had completely preserved everything the original owner had kept.

Xi Congshuang pondered for a moment, piecing together the information she had gathered, and gained a deeper understanding of the Xi family's current situation.

Ms. Xi never married and devoted herself to her career. It was thought that with her desire for control, she would remain firmly in the position of chairman and hold onto power until her death.

In recent years, however, her energy has waned, and she has shown a tendency to retire and recuperate. But she has never revealed to the public who she intends to become the next leader of the Xi family.

Since no one is favored, perhaps it means that in Mr. Xi's heart, anyone is fine?

As a result, people's hearts were unsettled.

For the past two years, the position of the successor of the Xi family has remained undecided. There are four most likely candidates: Xi Congshuang and her father, Xi Hanran, and Xi Congshuang's fourth aunt.

Before the car accident, the competition among the group was almost open. The original owner of this body was also an ambitious person. She was not willing to be a princess and showed her abilities from her teenage years, frequently visiting the company.

She knew her father well; he was a fisherman who liked to take his wife out to sea to fish. He was quite family-oriented and his personality was more like her deceased grandmother's—not very ambitious.

Even if her father succeeds in the competition by virtue of being the son of Chairman Xi's sister, once he takes power, he will still leave the work to her and become a figurehead emperor.

Since that's the case, why not just take it one step at a time and succeed directly, letting the angler focus on fiddling with his fishing rod?

But fate is unpredictable, and a car accident claimed the lives of two of the most promising heirs.

Xi Congshuang is now disabled and doctors have determined that she may be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

The Xi family will not allow someone with a significant disability to become the leader, as it would negatively impact the company's image.

After assessing the situation, Xi Congshuang finally understood why Xi Hanran always looked at her with a sense of impending doom.

If Xi Congshuang were willing now, even with her legs disabled, she could still return to the company thanks to Chairman Xi's favoritism, even if it would be pitiful.

Given the current situation, becoming the next leader will not be easy for Xi Congshuang, but influencing the final outcome will not be difficult.

After her father's death, all of his shares and everything else were inherited by Xi Congshuang, making her a shareholder with considerable influence within the Xi family business.

No wonder Xi Hanran always keeps an eye on Wen Hai; she's afraid her fourth aunt will come knocking and try to form an alliance with her, which would only make Xi Hanran's hopes even slimmer.

However, Xi Hanran still didn't understand that her fourth aunt would never come to Xi Congshuang to form an alliance; the other party clearly thought too highly of herself.

She considered herself the most senior and of the highest rank. After seeing Xi Congshuang's father die, she believed that the biggest threat had disappeared and that she would not waste her energy on Xi Congshuang.

The remaining Xi Hanran is an impetuous young girl, not to mention Xi Congshuang who is disabled in both legs. Even with Chairman Xi's love, how much influence can she have on the huge Xi Group?

However, Fourth Aunt was indeed right. If it were the original owner, she would only be busy tormenting Cheng Zhishu and would never have considered returning to the Xi family.

Xi Congshuang, who was lost in her own world, suddenly heard a low voice beside her. She came back to her senses and thought that Cheng Zhishu had woken up.

Turning her head, she found that Cheng Zhishu's eyes were still closed, and her originally smooth brows were furrowed again, clearly indicating that she was not sleeping soundly.

Her lips, which had just been moistened with a cotton swab, became dry again, pale and sickly. She tried to say something, but her voice was too soft to be heard.

"Don't……"

"What do you want?" Xi Congshuang turned her wheelchair and leaned closer, bringing her ear to Cheng Zhishu's mouth, finally hearing what she was saying.

Cheng Zhishu: "Mom...Mom...I'm in pain..."

Xi Congshuang was taken aback.

Cheng Zhishu started fidgeting again, trying to curl up into a ball, and kept calling out, "Mom, Mom, it hurts so much..."

Xi Congshuang grabbed her wrist with some force to prevent her from moving: "You're looking for Wang Ya?"

"..."

The person in bed continued to cry, but no longer called for her mother. She buried her face in the pillow, biting her lip and silently shedding tears.

People who are used to hiding their emotions cry silently, subconsciously suppressing their voices and sobbing softly.

Xi Congshuang: "..."

She didn't shed a single tear when she received the gift from Wen Can; she was strong and calm. I thought she had already adjusted herself and moved on to the next step in her life. The red apple even whispered in my ear more than once that she truly deserved to be the female lead.

She's the kind of female protagonist who will bankrupt the Xi family, a clan with a history spanning over a century.

The female protagonist, who could easily destroy the Xi family with a wave of her hand, lay on the bed, her shoulders hunched and tears streaming down her face like pearls falling from a broken string.

The sense of threat that the system had painstakingly created for Xi Congshuang vanished instantly, leaving only a pillowcase soaked with tears, like the footprints of a stray animal passing by the door on a rainy day.

Cheng Zhishu seemed to have become a person made of water, with tears flowing out continuously, silently releasing the grievances that had been suppressed for a long time.

The system message didn't mention Cheng Zhishu's background, only briefly stating her ending: she was alone until she was imprisoned. The mother she mentioned was probably her adoptive mother, Wang Ya.

Xi Congshuang asked again, "Can I call Wang Ya over? Do you want to see her?"

Answer me, and I will grant your wish.

Whether the person who was asleep heard Xi Congshuang's words or not, they probably did, and they lowered their sobs even further.

With her other hand, she touched Cheng Zhishu's damp face, bent her knuckles, and wiped away the tear that had slid down from the corner of her eye. She looked at the tear with a strange feeling.

Xi Congshuang has seen many people cry, and has witnessed all kinds of tears: the tears shed by grieving family members in hospitals, the tears shed by people in the business world begging her to be lenient, tears of fear, or tears of regret...

But she herself didn't cry. If it weren't for the few tears she shed during her treatment, Xi Congshuang would have almost thought she was born without tears.

Tears silently slid down her knuckles, dripping onto the hem of her skirt. Xi Congshuang lowered her eyes, staring at the wet stains on the pure white skirt.

She watched Cheng Zhishu's tears as if she were an outsider, not quite understanding why she would so weakly seek out someone who had abandoned her, and then looked down at the traces of tears that had blurred her vision.

Then the crybaby moved her face, stretched out her other hand from the warm blankets, pressed down on Xi Congshuang's hand, and carefully pressed it against her own face.

For someone who has a fever, the cool touch of this hand on their skin can be very soothing.

The remaining tears dampened her palms, and Xi Congshuang tried to pull her hand away, but failed.

The soft, slightly cool touch on Cheng Zhishu's face made her feel very comfortable, and she couldn't help but rub against it.

It felt like she'd been nuzzled by a furry animal's head.
