Chapter 28 Twenty-Eight Bats

"Evil." Hawkeye made a voice similar to Catwoman's. "I can't imagine how Batman deals with this thing."

In front of him, Xiao Chou was tied up like a caterpillar, twitching every few minutes as if in its death struggle.

"You'll gain experience as you sort garbage for a long time." Iron Man said, "I haven't finished my work yet but I've been pulled into this meeting. Who can give me an explanation? Mr. Fury, the cheerleader?"

The director of SHIELD said seriously: "I need to write a report."

"…What?"

"Report. For the higher-ups. We have to explain how this all happened." The director held the report in one hand and the ballpoint pen in the other without looking up. "The confession of the criminal is very important, you know, no matter whether what he said is true or false. There will be 'professionals' to help judge."

Iron Man's lips moved slightly. Hawkeye was sharp-eyed and felt that he probably said a slang with a similar meaning to "a dog's mouth cannot spit out ivory".

"You are about to become a team, so it is better to get used to the necessary group activities as soon as possible." Fury tapped the pen, "Okay, let's start now. Xiao Chou, cooperate with us so that we can send you to the hospital as soon as possible."

Black Widow rolled her eyes.

It was obvious that none of them liked or approved of this.

"Huh~ What do you want me to confess?" Xiao Chou took a deep breath and said, "A list of undercover agents of SHIELD? There are really a lot of them. I suggest you start by checking the people around you."

This statement not only sounded provocative, but also seemed to be a divisive one. However, the director of SHIELD acted calmly, as if to say, "I've seen it all." He wrote quickly while saying, "Tell me everything you know."

Half an hour later, several superheroes were sitting on the sofa playing with their cell phones or standing by the windowsill talking in low voices.

To be honest, after such a big leak in SHIELD, it is understandable that Fury wrote a report in name but actually confessed the details of the crime to gain trust in order to stabilize people's hearts. Unfortunately, there is another innocent person involved, even though the other party may have been prepared. These heroes with different personalities just lack the curiosity to explore other people's privacy - they are not close enough to Batman to share secrets.

Everyone has secrets, and those that are deliberately hidden often mean pain that exceeds the limit of self-esteem. There are pros and cons to being honest or concealing, and it is up to the person concerned to decide for himself.

"Why did you kidnap Harvey Dent?"

After summarizing the two A4 pages of unknown names, Fury finally asked further.

Captain America glanced at his companion, interrupted Xiao Chou's answer, and asked, "Is this necessary?"

Fury raised his head, and the emotion revealed in his one remaining eye was so calm that it could be called cruel: "Let's sort out the timeline first. Titan potion appeared in September and October. The transaction between Hydra, the Assassin's League and the Gotan Gang took place in early November. It was also during this period that Batman discovered the whereabouts of Hydra and entrusted Dr. Banner to bring the intelligence to us."

"After that, SHIELD made significant progress in its analysis of the parallel universe. We can assume that some opposing organizations also got the news."

The director ignored the weird or disgusted expressions from the superheroes.

"In late November, Clown and Dino escaped from Arkham and kidnapped Harvey Dent, using him to lure Batman into a trap."

"There was a period of about half a month of idle time. Someone approached Xiao Chou and promised him a reward that interested him. The goal was the same as Xiao Chou's - to investigate the Gotan vigilante."

"Did you find it? There is an intelligence gap here. When you saw the photo, you first concluded that the parallel universe was different based on the energy feedback around the Cosmic Cube. Then, based on Batman's condition, you inferred that the incident might not have happened yet. If someone knew more about him, they might guess from his behavior that this incident might have happened in the past. This involves the next question: Is he dead? How did he survive?"

"The correct idea is to rule out the first two. Because the third conclusion requires more explanations and is more difficult to verify. But Xiao Chou and his partners directly chose the third one: Batman may have died once."

"I see," Tony said. "You mean they can explain the key point in the third point. They know there is a way to resurrect the dead."

"Yes. Only this can explain the logic of Joker's behavior." Fury remained calm in the Joker's suspicious eyes. "Although he is a lunatic, you can't say that his actions are irrational. On this basis, Harvey Dent became bait. Why? Because Batman cares about him and Gotham. I specifically investigated Dent. He is a good person in the universal sense. He sticks to the truth and is not afraid of power. This is why he is willing to become a prosecutor in a place like Gotham. After Batman appeared, many media mentioned them side by side, saying that they are the light and dark sides of justice."

Black Widow said, "But Batman never contacted Dent."

"He was deliberately avoiding him, such as never going to places where Dent had appeared, or skipping the criminals who were about to appear on Dent's trial stand. When Commissioner Gordon said that Chou had kidnapped the prosecutor, Batman didn't even ask his name. If he was a lone ranger who refused to have companions, he had maintained a good cooperative relationship with the police chief from the beginning. This special treatment may have attracted opponents to another extent. They focused their attention on Harvey, and I am afraid that after that, they found that he might not be as innocent as he seemed."

"If you are too rigid, you will break easily." Natasha said thoughtfully, "From what you said, he has the potential to become another kind of 'vigilante'."

Ignore the law, abandon the bottom line, and lynch the criminals.

Or perhaps, in the eyes of most ordinary people, they are just serial killers satisfying their own selfish desires.

Fury: "We have no idea what kind of impact it would have on Gotham if Batman and Dent became partners. We shouldn't jump to conclusions before seeing the full picture. But no matter what, Chou's 'bait' was so successful that they may have gotten what they wanted."

Xiao Chou burst out laughing.

"Look, look, who is trying to guess Xiao Chou?" He said cheerfully, "Of course, there is no need for me to refute you. Now we agree that the little bat did die once. Then the next question is, who resurrected him?"

Everyone's eyes were on him, and for a moment it was as if this madman was standing in the center of the stage.

"You think it's you," Fury said.

"Okay!" Xiao Chou's arms couldn't move, so he slapped his trouser legs vigorously with his palms, making a loud applause. He even wanted to bow, "Thank you for the compliment! Your expectations of Xiao Chou exceeded my expectations! I will consider taking time to give a personal performance at S.H.I.E.L.D.~"

"Why?" Iron Man looked at him in bewilderment. "You would try to help your enemy? Don't tell me that the purpose of Xiao Chou's killing is actually to save the world?"

"This is not help." Captain America suddenly spoke, "Neither immortality nor resurrection can be without cost." His eyes fell on a point in the void, as if staring at something that others could not see. "Think about it, I have been sleeping for seventy years. My old friends have died, my lover has grown old, and I have to live alone in a strange era, trying my best to eliminate the incompatibility with the surrounding environment - this is when most people have heard of my name and S.H.I.E.L.D. came to help at the first time. What about Batman? Who in this world knows him? Who remembers him? Sometimes resurrection cannot be equated with giving."

"Bingo!" Xiao Chou shouted, "Captain America gets one point! Of course I don't know how this was done, after all, I also lost my memory. But don't you think it's interesting? 'Bad Day'——"

"'Can turn anyone into Choujo.'" A female voice with a tone completely different from Natasha's, but equally pleasant, interrupted. Catwoman leaned against the door frame without knowing when, and smiled at Captain America, who had been tricked before, as an apology. When she turned her head to look at Choujo, her expression turned into undisguised contempt, "You tried every means to make him become you, and you failed. Dream on, Choujo, it might be faster."

Dr. Banner stood up suddenly, his expression unable to hide his joy: "Are you awake? How are Batman and the two kids?"

"We had a wonderful Christmas Eve," said Catwoman. "Batman saw ghosts from the past, the company of friends, and strange yet familiar visitors in the hallucinations brought on by the high fever. He and Clowney traveled through most of Gotham, listening to stories that were immersed in old legends. In the end, the madman in Arkham was smashed into the snow by Catwoman with a shovel, and Batman buried himself in the grave after the Christmas carols rang. We passed through the door that brought hope, and only then were we able to wake up from the absurd and bizarre dream."

People looked at her in confusion.

Mystery seemed to have put a veil over Catwoman, and she looked strangely beautiful at this moment.

"Are you...telling a fairy tale?"

Catwoman still had the touch of Two-Face's files in her heart. Facing those friendly eyes, she replied, "Maybe."
