The maid brought in the food and invited Lin and Ren Shimao, who were sitting at the head of the bed, to eat. They now ate at a table set up beside the bed.
After she was able to get up, Lin refused to leave Ren Yaoyu or return to Yanzhou. She was afraid that she would not be able to return if she did not see her daughter. In the past month, both Lin and Ren Shimao had lost a lot of weight. Lin was so thin that her eyes were sunken.
Lin's eyes were fixed on her daughter, and she shook her head: "I can't eat anymore. Wulang, eat quickly."
Ren Shimao sighed, took the bowl handed to him by the maid, mixed the rice with chicken soup, and then scooped it up with a spoon and brought it to Lin's mouth: "Eat a few mouthfuls, don't fall down again, otherwise I really don't know what to do."
Lin's tears fell again when she heard this. She sniffed and took the bowl and spoon from Ren Shimao's hand: "I'll eat by myself, you can have some too."
Ren Shimao nodded, handed the bowl to Lin, mixed the rice with the soup, and quickly finished the bowl. These days, Ren Shimao had to take care of Lin and Ren Yaoyu, so he had never been particular about eating.
Lin watched him finish the bowl, and she couldn't describe the feeling in her heart. She was afraid that Ren Shimao would worry about her, so she lowered her head and took a few bites herself.
When Ren Shimao saw that Lin had eaten, he felt relieved and the pressure in his heart was reduced a little.
Lin could not eat any more after eating only half a bowl. Ren Shimao did not force her any more. He asked the maid to clear away the dishes and then went out to the bathroom to change clothes.
When Ren Shimao came back, he saw Lin kneeling beside the bed facing the door. She had her hands clasped together and was whispering something with a very pious expression, as if she was making a wish.
Ren Shimao waited until she finished speaking and opened her eyes before walking over, reaching out to pull her up and brushing the dust off her skirt.
"I remember you don't believe in Buddhism."
Lin took Ren Shimao's hand and they sat back on the bed. "I didn't believe it at first, but I will continue to believe it in the future."
Lin turned to look at Ren Shimao and said, "I don't know if it was a dream before, but when I felt like I was about to die, I seemed to see the Buddha's light. But I could also feel you holding my hand and crying, asking me not to leave you, saying that you wouldn't know what to do if I died."
Ren Shimao nodded, held Lin's hand and said, "I did say that." At that time, Lin couldn't even swallow the medicine. He was so anxious that he kept crying. Lin was also crying. He didn't know if she was awake at that time.
Lin lowered her head and smiled. "I was very distressed at the time. Although I knew death would bring me liberation, I still couldn't bear to leave. I prayed to that light, saying, if you can only let me survive this time and complete our marriage, from now on I will devote myself to Buddhism and become a follower of the Buddha. I will also be dedicated to goodness and have no malice in my heart. Then I really woke up."
Mrs. Lin paused, turned to look at Ren Yaoyu, reached out and touched her forehead, and whispered, "I just made a wish to the Buddha. As long as he can make Yu'er wake up, I am willing to bear this face forever in this life, as if it is the retribution I deserve for my wrongdoing. In this life and the next, you, Yu'er, and Jian'er, we will always be a family. Even if we are born in ordinary families or poorer, we will always be together." Mrs. Lin looked up at Ren Shimao and said with tears in her eyes, "Husband, what do you say?"
