Ren Yaoqi turned a deaf ear and stood outside the curtain waiting for the maids to report back.
The Ren family had strict rules, especially in Ronghua Courtyard, the home of Old Master Ren and Old Madam Ren. One could not enter the main house without being told to do so. On the day Li returned, she knelt in the corridor for over an hour because Old Madam Ren hadn't given her permission to enter.
Fortunately, the old lady didn't want to bother Ren Yaoqi today. The maid at the door quickly opened the curtain for Ren Yaoqi: "Fifth sister, please come in."
The warm breeze from the room blew towards him, and Ren Yaoqi walked in.
The main house of Ronghua Courtyard has five rooms facing north and south. The middle one is the main hall, but it is empty at this time. There are only two maids standing in front of the carved moon-shaped door in the second room on the right.
Seeing Ren Yaoqi coming in, the two maids knelt down and bowed, then lifted the brocade curtain with the Chinese character "Fu" pattern. A slight sound came out from the right side room, mixed with the fragrance of baking boxes.
It's almost time for the old man and the old lady to have breakfast.
The younger generations of the Ren family had to be on an empty stomach when they came to pay their respects. They could only go back to the courtyard to eat after serving their elders and finishing their dinner.
When Ren Yaoqi entered, he saw the eldest wife, Wang, leading her eldest daughter-in-law, Zhao, in setting up the kang table.
A dozen or so breakfast dishes were already placed on a large kang against the north wall, and several maids were standing nearby with several uncovered food boxes.
The eldest master Ren Shizhong led his sons and nephews to sit on the nanmu chairs on the east and west sides, while the third sister Ren Yaohua, the fourth sister Ren Yaoyin, and the ninth sister Ren Yaoying stood under the south window.
Ren Yaohua and Ren Yaoqi lived in the same courtyard, but they had never been together when they came to Ronghua Courtyard to pay their respects. When Ren Yaohua was at the Ren family's house, she would spend half of each month in the warm room in the east side of Ronghua Courtyard, and when she lived in Ziwei Courtyard, she would come earlier than Ren Yaoqi every day.
Ren Yaoqi looked around the room and bowed to greet the elders.
The eldest wife turned around and looked at her, smiling, "Fifth girl, are you feeling well again? Yesterday, the old lady asked you to rest for a few more days. You don't have to rush over to visit her every morning and evening."
Ren Yaoqi lowered his head and said, "I'm all better now. If you keep trying to be lazy and not come, I won't come over."
The eldest wife smiled and nodded. "Good boy. Don't forget your Aunt Fang's contribution to your quick recovery. Although your eldest aunt is in charge of the household, it was your Aunt Fang who arranged for you to get a doctor and medicine this time."
Ren Yaoqi glanced at the eldest wife, smiled, and nodded in response.
Wang, the head wife of the family, has a good reputation in the Ren family. She is fair in her dealings and clear in her rewards and punishments.
Take care of what you should take care of, and turn a blind eye to what you shouldn’t take care of.
Since she doesn't take the credit, she naturally doesn't have to bear the responsibility either.
After exchanging greetings with the eldest wife, Ren Yaoqi walked to the south window and stood with Ren Yaohua and the others. She knelt down and saluted her third sister Ren Yaohua and fourth sister Ren Yaoyin, who were older than her.
Ren Yaohua, as always, ignored her. Fourth sister Ren Yaoyin, however, smiled at her kindly and returned the greeting. Ninth sister Ren Yaoying, younger than her, curled her lips and gave her a hasty, reluctant greeting. Ren Yaoqi simply nodded and stood beside Ren Yaoyin.
