Today, the Fifth Lady made an appointment with Mrs. Gao, who lived two blocks away, to play mahjong. For some reason, while others were having bad luck, she had been on a roll these past few days, winning quite a bit of money. This had even spurred the Fifth Lady, who had originally been averse to the game, to become interested. While the winnings were small, and Mrs. Gao might not have been particularly impressed, she felt good about the wins, and she also got to listen to some gossip from others. Whether or not the gossip was about her niece was of little concern to her.
"What can you, a second-class maid in the outer courtyard, say to me?" said the Fifth Madam unhappily.
Xueli immediately said, "Fifth Madam, I used to serve in the inner courtyard! I was kicked out a while ago because I displeased the master."
Ren Yaoyu thought she looked familiar and said, "Ah, I remember now. Weren't you serving Fifth Sister before? Xueli? Yes, mother, she used to be Fifth Sister's maid."
The Fifth Madam then looked at Xue Li straight in the eye, but what could Ren Yaoqi's maid have to say to her?
Ren Yaoyu was quite interested: "What do you want to tell my mother? Is it related to Fifth Sister?"
Xueli shook her head sadly. "Although I used to serve the Fifth Young Lady, I was assigned by Concubine Fang as her maid, so I never won her favor. How could I let her know about her affairs?"
When the Fifth Madam heard that she was Concubine Fang's woman, she immediately frowned in disgust and became even more impatient with her: "What are you all standing there for? Get her out of here!"
Xueli refused to leave and begged, "Fifth Madam, I really have something important to tell you. I know you have a kind heart. I only ask you to give me a chance to live!"
Ren Yaoyu had no interest in playing mahjong, and she was somewhat disgusted by the Gao family's young ladies' constant habit of telling her in front of her that they wouldn't gain weight no matter how much they ate, thinking she didn't understand they were mocking her for gaining weight even by drinking water. So she was more interested in Xueli's words.
"Mom, it's still early. What's the harm in listening to her? Maybe she really has something important to tell you."
The Fifth Madam thought that was right, so she asked the maid who had been ordered to chase the people away to leave. She called her over and asked, "What do you want to say to me?"
Xueli looked around and whispered, "This is a serious matter. Please ask Madam Wu to send everyone away!"
Lin was a little suspicious, but she was not afraid that a little maid would do something bad in front of her, so she asked several little maids and old women to move away, leaving only two big maids to serve her closely.
Xueli then said, "Fifth Madam, Ninth Miss, do you still remember what happened with Concubine Kang?"
As soon as these words were spoken, both Fifth Madam and Ren Yaoyu changed their expressions. Ren Yaoyu would never forget the sight of Aunt Kang lying on the ground covered in blood, and Fifth Madam could not stand the woman who had once tried to take her husband away.
Both mother and daughter thought Xueli was deliberately looking for trouble, and were about to get angry. But Xueli seized the opportunity and said, "Fifth Madam and Ninth Miss, calm down. I just want to tell you that Ninth Miss was framed! Concubine Kang's slip was not Ninth Miss's fault!"
After these words were spoken, both Lin and Ren Yaoyu were stunned.
Lin was the first to react. She said sternly, "What do you mean? Who framed my Yu'er?"
"Shh..." Xueli put her hand to her lips and looked around, "Fifth Madam, please don't make a sound. This servant still wants to live."
