Xiao Yan's heart softened, thinking that maybe he had accidentally revealed his whereabouts and it had nothing to do with others.
He gently but firmly pried A Lian's hands apart: "I'll be back soon, don't be afraid." As he was about to jump out, his chest suddenly stopped, and then his legs went limp and he fell back into the carriage.
A-Lian started crying.
Xiao Yan's face was as cold as ice, but he didn't even look at A Lian. He just stared at the cup of tea he had just drunk with an expressionless face, his eyes a little confused and dim.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." A-Lian covered her face and cried out.
Xiao Yan did not ask why. There could be many reasons for betrayal, but he only had one sincere heart. Perhaps this was the only time in his life that he would muster up the courage to act impulsively.
The guards outside fell one by one, and Xiao Yan picked up his sword again. He had always felt that if he died one day, there would be only one way to die, besides dying of old age, and that was to die in battle.
Xiao Yan didn't even glance at A Lian again, not even a glance. He was carefully calculating how many people he could kill in his current condition. Xiao Yan knew that he was doomed today, but he was not afraid. As long as he died with the sword in his hand, he would still be a descendant of the Xiao family.
Just when the guards outside could no longer hold on and Xiao Yan was struggling to get out of the carriage using his sword to support himself, arrows suddenly shot towards him. Xiao Yan thought the enemy was still ambushing him, but later he found that those who fell were all the enemy's men.
Xiao Yan turned around in surprise and saw about a hundred men and horses charging towards them. Their hooves were wrapped in cloth, making very little noise. However, Xiao Yan's sharp eyes recognized them as elite soldiers from the Yanbei Army.
Although he didn't know why the elite soldiers of the Yanbei Army appeared here, Xiao Yan knew that he was saved.
After the assassins were killed or fled, Xiao Yan saw clearly that the person who led the troops to rescue him was his bad friend Zhao Ninghe.
Zhao Ninghe's grandfather had been on the battlefield with the old prince, and he and Zhao Ninghe had grown up together. They had experienced military service together, sometimes being so close that they wore the same pants, and sometimes they would gossip about each other and expose each other's shortcomings.
Zhao Ning and Xiao Yan have not been getting along well recently, and he has never been friendly to him when he sees him.
Zhao Ninghe's sweetheart is Yun Chuxue.
Zhao Ninghe walked over and took a look inside the carriage. Without asking any questions, he clenched his fist and punched Xiao Yan hard, not in the face, but in the stomach. The pain made Xiao Yan's face turn pale.
Xiao Yan was unwilling to get on the carriage again, so he struggled to get on a horse and followed Zhao Ninghe back to Yunyang City.
"Why are you here?"
Zhao Ninghe said coldly: "If I hadn't come, would you still be alive now?"
Xiao Yan smiled apologetically: "Thank you, Master Zhao, for saving my life."
Zhao Ninghe glanced at Xiao Yan and said, "Don't worry, the prince and the others don't know anything. These are my soldiers. They happened to be training nearby recently. When you go back, behave yourself and pretend nothing happened."
Xiao Yan breathed a sigh of relief. He wasn't afraid of being scolded by his grandfather and father; at most, he'd get another beating. But he couldn't afford to lose face. Fortunately, it was Zhao Ninghe who came. They'd done all sorts of awful things together and had seen each other at their most shameful. If it had been anyone else, he'd have preferred death.
However, Xiao Yan relaxed too early. When he entered the city and saw Yun Chuxue's carriage waiting at the city gate, his face was so ugly that it was beyond description.
Zhao Ninghe looked at Xiao Yan's carriage, which had been motionless since the beginning, and then at the Yun family's carriage. He curled his lips into a malicious smile and apologized insincerely, "Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to tell you. It was Miss Yun who sent someone to tip me off, so I could arrive in time to save your life."
