Ren Yaoqi couldn't see clearly what was in the middle of the walnut, so he raised his hand and shook it next to his ear, very lightly.
After looking carefully at the window, she found that there was indeed a circle of very fine lines in the middle, so she tried to pry it open.
After a very slight "crack" sound, the walnut was indeed split into two halves. Fortunately, due to its hard texture, it did not break.
Inside one of the half walnut shells was a piece of paper folded into two pieces the size of an adult's fingernail. When Ren Yaoqi opened it, she was stunned by the familiar handwriting on it.
There were only a few words on the note: Tomorrow at 9:00 PM, Tan Ji Roast Duck.
Ren Yaoqi: “…”
The last time Xiao Jinglin said he wanted to go eat roast duck with her, he was called away by someone from the palace halfway. However, the familiar handwriting on this piece of paper reminded her of the handwriting on the paper that Xiao Jingxi had asked her to guess when Zhu Ruomei disappeared.
She glanced down at the delicate walnut carving she had placed on the kang table. Was it Xiao Jinglin or Xiao Jingxi who invited her? If it was Xiao Jingxi, then asking her out might not be as simple as just eating roast duck.
Ren Yaoqi recalled Dongsheng's suggestion that he found out about the Zhai family because of Xiao Jingxi's suggestion, and also thought about the sudden death of the Lei family's wife. Both of these events were related to the Han family.
After lunch, the drizzle finally stopped.
Ren Shijia was going to the Lei family with Mrs. Lin and Old Mrs. Lin to pay their respects. Before leaving, he called both Ren Yaoqi and Ren Yaoyin over.
Ren Shijia couldn't take Lin Cen with her, but she was also worried about leaving him at the Lin family, so she asked her two nieces to help her take care of the child.
"Don't let Cen'er out of your sight. Although the wet nurse and several maids were carefully selected by mother and me, I am still a little worried that they might make mistakes." Holding his sleeping son in his arms, Ren Shijia's eyes were gentle but filled with worry.
As innocent as Ren Shijia was, she became shrewd when faced with the issue of her son's safety. The lessons she had learned had forced her to be more cautious, as this child was her life.
Ren Yaoqi and Ren Yaoyin agreed seriously. Ren Yaoyin said, "Don't worry, aunt. My fifth sister and I are here."
Ren Shijia handed the child to her maid, patted her two nieces' heads, and smiled gently: "Aunt will be back as soon as possible."
The reason why Ren Shijia chose Ren Yaoqi and Ren Yaoyin to stay by her side was because in her eyes, these two nieces were the most docile, well-behaved and sensible. Even though they were young, they were very reassuring. So she felt at ease to leave the child to her two nieces to take care of them, not to mention that there were wet nurses and maids around.
"You should stay at home too. Madam Lu will take care of the things in the yard, and the things in the house will be left to you. I will take Dujuan and the others with me." Ren Shijia instructed Chunlan, the maid holding the child.
When there was really nothing left to explain, Ren Shijia changed his clothes and combed his hair to get ready to go out.
Ren Yaoqi followed Ren Shijia to the inner room and while helping her choose earrings that matched her plain hairpin, she said, "Aunt, the princess sent someone to tell me to go out tomorrow."
Ren Shijia glanced at Ren Yaoqi in the mirror and smiled, "Okay, then go. I originally wanted to take you and Yin'er to travel around Yunyang City, but I'm afraid I won't be free in the next few days."
Ren Yaoqi picked out a pair of pearl earrings and gave them to Ren Shijia. Ren Shijia nodded and handed them to the maid to put on her.
"I also want to visit my grandparents."
