Yanbei's relationship with the imperial court was delicate, and many of the Xu family's descendants served in the court. The current Prime Minister, Xu Yuan, was Xu Wanli's cousin. After arriving in Yanbei, Xu Wanli never returned to Jiangnan. The Xu family treated him coldly, refusing to mention this legitimate son, who enjoyed a high reputation in Yanbei.
Ren Yaoqi knew that not long after Xu Wanli became the principal of Yunyang Academy, the Xu family had already removed Xu Wanli from the family tree, but neither the Xu family nor Xu Wanli made this public. Therefore, although people outside speculated about the relationship between Xu Wanli and the Xu family, very few people knew the truth.
Ren Yaoqi also knew that Xu Wanli had left Jiangnan and come to Yanbei because of his wife, Ouyang. Ouyang was a remarried woman. She was originally the wife of Xu Wanli's brother and Xu Wanli's sister-in-law.
Soon after Ouyang married into the Xu family, her husband died. In a family as prestigious as the Xu family, Ouyang was not allowed to remarry, but she ended up marrying her own brother-in-law.
The Xu family in Jiangnan could not tolerate an unfilial descendant like Xu Wanli, so Xu Wanli had no choice but to bring Ouyang Shi to Yanbei. Compared to Jiangnan, Yanbei was much more tolerant of etiquette. In addition, after arriving in Yanbei, Xu Wanli was appreciated by the then Yanbei King Xiao Qishan. In addition, Xu Wanli himself was talented and had high academic attainments, so he quickly gained a firm foothold among the Yanbei students.
Ren Yaoqi knew this secret of the Xu family because Xu Wanli and her husband Pei Zhiyan were brothers-in-law. Mr. Pei's wife also had the surname Ouyang and was the youngest sister of the Ouyang family.
Xu Wanli did not have a very good relationship with the Xu family, but he got along very well with his wife's brother-in-law Pei Zhiyan. The two had been good friends for many years and were close friends. They often exchanged letters on weekdays.
On the second day, Xiao Jinglin indeed sent someone to pick up Ren Yaoqi and go to the Yanbei Palace early.
When Ren Yaoqi left, Xiao Jinglin was still practicing his shooting skills in his yard.
After standing under the eaves and watching for a while, Ren Yaoqi waited until Xiao Jinglin had stopped and then walked over and jokingly asked, "Is the princess nervous?"
Xiao Jinglin said seriously: "How could it be?"
Ren Yaoqi blinked, leaned over and whispered, "It's easy for the princess to lie to others, but it's hard to lie to me. I know a secret of the princess."
Xiao Jinglin glanced at her: "What secret?"
"When the princess is nervous, she likes to play with the stick."
Xiao Jinglin was silent for a while: "This is a gun, not a stick!"
Ren Yaoqi smiled and said, "My lord, you know I don't know martial arts, so naturally I can't tell the difference between a stick and a gun. I hope you will forgive my mistakes."
Xiao Jinglin looked at Ren Yaoqi for a while, then suddenly said, "How about I teach you martial arts?"
Ren Yaoqi was stunned and said quickly: "Forget it, I'm not cut out for martial arts."
Upon hearing this, Xiao Jinglin looked at Ren Yaoqi critically, even circling around her a few times, and then slowly said, "Although you don't have much aptitude, it's not impossible to learn."
