Chapter 23: Old Mitou's Past
"I'm just staying here temporarily, and I'll leave one day. Xiaomi, do you really have no thoughts about your life now?"
Yawning, she walked side by side with Old Mitou.
The reason why Feng Zhibai asked Lao Mi Tou this was because he saw that he had a past in his heart that he could not let go of.
Lao Mi's back hunched a little, and a look of sadness gradually appeared on his face.
When he arrived in front of Building 8, Lao Mitou held onto the railing of the stairs and climbed up with great effort.
When he reached the door, he sighed and said, "Although I've only been with you for a day and I don't know who you are, I can sense that you are indeed quite capable. Master Qu Tian also told me that you must be a capable person. Since we live and die together, I am not afraid to say a few more words to you."
He rummaged through his bag, took out the key from the yellow cloth bag and opened the door.
"I'm already over fifty, and my son and daughter have both started their own families and careers. If I hadn't met you and Master Qu Tianshi today, the rest of my life might have just passed like this."
As the door opened, a cool breeze blew out.
Old Mitou reached out and turned on the button on the wall that controlled the light.
With a "pop", the huge house appeared in front of Feng Zhibai.
How to describe Lao Mi Tou’s home?
Empty, big, lonely.
Lao Mi Tou is very similar to her in some ways, such as loneliness.
But he is much better than me.
At least he had neighbors and people to talk to.
As for Feng Zhibai, she is alone.
Everyone she has ever been with is just a passing cloud to her, and everyone's lifespan is just a blink of an eye in her eyes.
In comparison, Lao Mi Tou is much better than her.
He looked up at the room helplessly, and his eyes fell on Old Mitou.
The moment he turned on the light, Old Mi was stunned when he saw his empty house. Then he sighed and his eyes couldn't help but turn red.
Walking in from outside, he staggered to sit on the sofa, then bent down to pull the drawer on the coffee table.
While pulling, he lowered his voice and said, "Come in, don't mind, my house is a bit empty."
"It's a bit empty, but I'm not someone who would mind that."
Feng Zhibai waved his hand and found a separate sofa to sit on.
Old Mitou straightened up and took something out of the drawer.
It's a framed photo.
Raising his hand to wipe the photo in the frame, his face showed a hint of tenderness but also infinite loss.
"My wife is a very good person. Although she can be a bit aggressive, she is very straightforward and never plays tricks. My son has my personality, a bit dull, and my daughter has her mother's personality, she is open-minded. When my wife left us, my son was twelve years old and my daughter had just celebrated her ninth birthday. I still can't forget how my wife left us."
Perhaps the dusty memories struck Lao Mi's heart, and he kept wiping the photo of the person who had left him with trembling hands.
Tears silently flowed down his eyes and fell on the photo. He couldn't wipe them away with his hands, and he was afraid that the tears would blur the people in the photo, so he hurriedly pulled up his sleeves and wiped the photo behind the glass hard.
Feng Zhibai folded his hands on his legs. Seeing Lao Mitou's lips trembling as if he wanted to say something but couldn't, he felt a tightness in his chest.
She stood up and sat next to Lao Mitou, reached out and grabbed his arm, and said in a gentle and comforting voice: "Don't be afraid."
A shout of "Don't be afraid" quieted down Old Mitou.
With blurry eyes, he turned to look at Feng Zhibai, and then said in a trembling voice: "I will never forget the murderer who killed my wife! It was she who made our family bankrupt and tore us apart!"
He clutched the photo frame tightly, his eyes distant and filled with hatred.
"Twenty years ago, my wife had a very good friend. But this friend was quiet and deep-minded, and her personality and lifestyle were completely different from my wife's. They often ate and chatted together, and soon became good friends. My wife is straightforward and doesn't mince words. She can't keep anything secret and tells her everything. But this friend is completely different from my wife. She never tells her about herself, including any decisions she makes. She never speaks out loud."
"At the time, the woman was a staff member at Qinghai Amusement Park. Later, due to some reasons, she resigned and stayed at home unemployed for six months. During this time, she called my wife and said that she was not liked by her mother-in-law at home and wanted to find a job outside."
"My wife was working as a chef at a restaurant in the city center at the time. Out of kindness, my wife introduced her to her restaurant as an apprentice. The woman was a slow learner, her hands and feet weren't very nimble, she wasn't talkative, and she often stood there in a daze. The store manager, remembering she was my wife's friend, took great care of her. Although her work wasn't very good and her efficiency was very slow, her monthly bonuses and subsidies were among the highest in the restaurant. My wife also took good care of her, taking care of her in every aspect, both in life and work."
"But no one could have imagined that the person they took so much trouble to take care of would turn out to be such an ungrateful person! A murderer!"
Old Mitou slapped the sofa, his face full of anger.
"After working at my wife's store for a year and a half, the woman felt her salary was too low and threatened to quit, hoping for a raise. The store manager refused and called my wife over to persuade her. Not only did she not listen, but she pointed at my wife's nose and cursed her, saying she had no conscience and was helping outsiders exploit her!"
"My wife had nothing to say, so she went to the store manager, but she couldn't reach an agreement. The manager didn't say much, and kindly told her to find another job before resigning. The man was very grateful to the manager on the surface, but secretly went around spreading rumors. He said her workplace was bad, that the employees treated her badly, that the manager didn't want her and kicked her out of the store, that they beat and scolded my wife, and that the store where my wife worked added poison to the food."
"Soon, the incident alerted the police and the Food and Drug Administration. They came and conducted a thorough investigation. They were supposed to be leaving after verifying everything was clear. But something unexpected happened right before the investigation was over. An inspector discovered the contraband 'opium' in the restaurant's staff locker room."
Old Mitou held the photo in his arms. "The restaurant illegally placed poppies, punishable by a prison sentence of not less than five years but not more than ten years. The cabinet the prosecutors searched was my wife's cabinet."
"Later, inspectors found opium in various dishes. My wife was the chef, and everyone thought she cooked! Even the store manager thought she was deliberately harming them to help that woman! No matter how much my wife explained, no one believed her! The police took my wife away, and the store was closed for investigation due to illegal operations."
"The police called me and told me everything that had happened. I know my wife; she wouldn't do something like that! I rushed to the police station, and when I saw my wife, she burst into tears and told me everything about that woman. I ran to the police and told them the truth, but they said they checked the surveillance footage and didn't see that woman planting the poppies. They also didn't find any footage of my wife planting them."
