Chapter 329 Care
Meng Lingge asked, "Where are the two of you now? Did you two show yourselves in front of her?"
Chunhong replied, "No. Xia Zi and I have been hiding in the shadows, and we had two maids they had never seen negotiate with them. As Miss instructed, we have already taken them to the villa you prepared. Although news is scarce in the countryside, Guan's parents have heard about the identity of the prince and princess. Guan's mother also said that the future empress and Guan Yi'an had a relationship. Although it ended badly, it was only because your half-sister stole your husband that you acted out of spite and ended up hurting both of you."
"Now that so much time has passed, your anger should have subsided considerably. If her son hadn't been disfigured, she might have been able to use this connection to her advantage and become even wealthier. If we weren't worried about delaying Miss's business and being recognized by Madam Guan, Xia Zi and I would have loved to rush up and beat that old woman up."
When Guan Yi'an's parents were informed that he had been disfigured and lost his voice, they showed no grief or sorrow. Instead, they kept asking how much wealth Guan Yi'an had and whether it would allow them to squander the rest of their lives.
The most ridiculous thing is that even now, this old man still believes that Meng Lingge's breaking off the engagement was her loss, and that if Guan Yi'an hadn't been disfigured, Meng Lingge would still have helped her son out of consideration for their past relationship.
Meng Lingge laughed after hearing this.
"If they can really help me find Guan Yi'an this time, I will definitely take good care of them and let Guan's mother witness her son's 'charm' and see for herself how 'the Guan family is thriving.'"
The villa that Meng Lingge purchased was a large mansion with three courtyards and three entrances. It was decorated with pavilions and flower terraces, and the rooms were filled with luxurious furniture. Even the maids and servants she chose were clever and sensible.
As Guan's parents were helped to their destination by two young maids, they immediately remembered the residence bestowed upon Guan Yi'an by the Emperor when he was serving as Vice Minister of Rites.
That was the best house they had ever lived in, but unfortunately they didn't stay there for long. Their son was dismissed from his post and imprisoned, and they had to leave before they could even enjoy it properly.
Although this house is not as spacious as that one, it is elegant and comfortable, and is a million times better than the cowshed they live in.
The two men were increasingly satisfied with what they saw, but worried that the maid beside them would laugh at their lack of knowledge, so they started pointing and commenting, acting bossy and domineering.
“An’er must not spend enough time at home. Look at those servants, they seem to have no eyes for work. These flowers need pruning, you can let them do it.”
"Exactly. This vase is getting in the way here. I'll take it to my room later."
"Also, your forms of address are incorrect. My son is someone of importance now, but he is still young. You cannot call him 'Master,' you must call him 'Master'. You should call us 'Old Master' and 'Old Madam,' do you understand?"
The two young girls inwardly scorned it, but outwardly they respectfully agreed.
"Understood, sir, madam."
Sister Chunhong instructed that as long as these two did not cause serious consequences, they should be allowed to have their way.
The servants in the villa kept Chunhong's instructions in mind and obeyed Guan's parents in everything. The two of them ordered them around for an hour or two, indulging in their pleasure of ordering around servants, and becoming absolutely certain that their son was now a rich man.
Exhausted from all the fuss, Mr. and Mrs. Guan realized that their current attire was completely out of place in their new home. Just as they were about to ask the servants to find a few clean sets of clothes so they could take a hot bath and wait for their son to return home in a presentable manner, they heard a sound coming from the gate.
"It must be the boss returning."
Upon hearing the little girl's words, Mr. and Mrs. Guan disregarded everything else and hurriedly rushed out of the mansion.
Upon seeing a masked man surrounded by several people in the distance, Guan's parents rubbed their eyes hard and rushed over, sobbing.
“My poor son, I’ve been dreaming of you coming back. Thank God, you’re still alive. Now your father and I finally have hope…”
“An’er, my An’er, your mother and I have suffered so much while you were gone. Now that you have the ability, you must stand up for us. You are really heartless. You live in such a big mansion, why did you only think of bringing us here today? You don’t even know what kind of place we live in.”
The two elderly people each held one of Guan Yi'an's hands tightly, constantly telling him about their grievances and difficulties.
Although they couldn't see Guan Yi'an's face, they instinctively felt that he was familiar. Besides, a maid had told them before that Guan Yi'an had been disfigured and lost his voice due to an accident, so the person wearing the mask must be their son.
Guan Yi'an felt as if all the blood in his body had frozen.
Today, the guards brought him out, saying that the princess was grateful for his help to young master Meng and had arranged for him to stay in a quiet place for a long time.
He immediately sensed that this was Meng Lingge testing him, and he suspected that there was definitely a trap in the new place she was taking him to.
It's either an old object that can expose his weakness, or an old story that can break his defenses.
He never expected that Meng Lingge would bring his parents along. He knew his parents better than Meng Lingge did.
Driven by profit, selfish and self-serving.
These few simple words from his parents immediately made Guan Yi'an understand the whole story. Guan's parents had been deceived by Meng Lingge and had come to him to acknowledge him and ask him to support them in their old age.
Guan Yi'an secretly lamented his predicament. He was barely able to take care of himself, so how could he possibly look after these two old people?
If he dares to show even a hint of tenderness or emotion, once Meng Lingge confirms his identity, it will be his death day.
But after only half a year, his parents had aged so much. Looking at their gray hair and cloudy eyes, even he, with a heart of stone, could not remain indifferent.
Fortunately, he wore two masks and couldn't speak, which allowed him to appear calm despite the turmoil in his heart.
Guan Yi'an closed her eyes briefly, and when she opened them the next second, she was completely bewildered and coldly resistant.
Meng Lingge had been hiding in the shadows beforehand. She was secretly pleased when she saw Guan Yi'an's moment of stalemate. She was just waiting for Guan Yi'an to respond to his parents so that she could take him down immediately.
Guan Yi'an's emotional moment lasted only a short time, in the blink of an eye, until he no longer recognized Guan's parents. His eyes were cold, and his whole demeanor was distant.
That momentary abnormality was more like an instinctive reaction after being startled by a stranger.
Was he just too good at disguising himself, or was he really not Guan Yi'an?
Guan's parents noticed Guan Yi'an's resistance and secretly regretted that they had only been admiring the large courtyard when they entered the house and hadn't had time to properly clean themselves up. They were sure that their shabby and disheveled appearance had frightened their son.
Guan's mother gripped Guan Yi'an even tighter, and this time she truly shed tears. It wasn't out of heartache for her son, but because she couldn't let go of this only lifeline.
