Chapter 60 Must Be Separated
"My husband is amazing. This lotus flower pastry is always hard to buy; I often can't get it."
Meng Lingge took off his cloak and dried the rainwater off his clothes before opening the oil paper package. Inside were lotus-shaped pastries, perfectly intact and emitting a faint fragrance.
Wen Zhiming beamed with joy at her praise. He gently picked up a lotus-shaped pastry and brought it to Meng Lingge's lips.
"Then I'll go buy them for my wife tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, and the day after that."
“You don’t need to buy it every day,” Meng Lingge chimed in. “The reason we love certain foods is because they are rare is because they are precious, and the satisfaction we feel when we eat them is even greater. If we could eat them every day, even if we didn’t get tired of them, we wouldn’t like them as much.”
"Oh." Wen Zhiming nodded as if he understood, but seeing that Meng Lingge still wasn't eating, he urged, "Wife, try it quickly. Mother will definitely send someone to find you later. I just saw Third Brother take Zhong Shensuan to find Mother."
"Zhong the Fortune Teller? A master fortune teller?" Meng Lingge asked in surprise.
The Meng family had consulted a fortune teller before, who said that she had a noble destiny and was born with the fate of a phoenix.
The current empress is still alive, and even the crown prince has a crown princess. Fearing that this talk would cause trouble if it got out, the father scolded the fortune teller for talking nonsense and drove him out.
After that, the family never consulted a fortune teller again.
Now that she has married Wen Zhiming, and her husband is in danger of losing his life, it is hard to see where her noble destiny lies, and it has nothing to do with the fate of a phoenix.
It seems that the fortune teller's prediction was indeed inaccurate.
“He’s a Taoist priest, but everyone calls him Zhong the Divine Calculator.” Wen Zhiming recalled carefully, “Anyway, every time he comes, my mother makes us go to see him so he can calculate the fortunes for the coming year. As long as we provide our birth date and time, he can do it. The ones he’s calculated before have all been accurate, so my mother trusts him a lot.”
Meng Lingge accepted the lotus-shaped pastry. It had a light fragrance and was especially crispy, just like the pastry from Zhang's Pastry Shop.
Does this person come here often?
Wen Zhiming said, "It seems like he used to come once a year, but I don't know why he came in less than half a year this time. It was even my third brother who personally picked him up."
Meng Lingge seemed thoughtful upon hearing this. "My third brother hasn't asked you to go to the military camp for several days. Today isn't his day off, so why is he still at the manor?"
Wen Zhiming shook his head. "I don't know. I was in a hurry to deliver the lotus flower pastries to you, so I didn't tell him."
He peeked over mysteriously and whispered in Meng Lingge's ear, "My third brother used to be very greedy when he was little. I was afraid he would steal the lotus flower pastry I bought for you."
Meng Lingge smiled indulgently, "Third brother has grown up. He's quiet and reserved now, as if he's not interested in anything. He won't steal your food."
Actually, it's not that he's uninterested in anything. Wen Kehao treats Wen Zhiming very well; he cares for his older brother even more than he cares for his mother.
Apart from Wen Zhiming, Wen Kehao was mostly indifferent and aloof to others.
They even harbored strong hostility towards her.
It's surprising that Wen Kehao would steal his older brother's food when he was little; he has such a lively and mischievous side.
Meng Lingge was wondering when Qiu Lan came in and reported, "Your Highness, Your Highness's Wife, the Princess Consort has sent someone over, asking you to go there as soon as possible."
"I knew it." Wen Zhiming snorted unhappily, packed up the remaining lotus flower pastries, and placed them on the table. "Let's go first, and my wife can eat them when she gets back."
"good."
When the couple arrived at the main house of Princess Anshun, they indeed saw Princess Anshun, Wen Kehao, and an old Taoist priest with a white beard.
“Lingge has arrived.” Princess Anshun took her hand and led her and Wen Zhiming to sit down in the center of the room. She pointed to the white-bearded Taoist priest and said, “Let me introduce you. This is Zhong Shensuan, who is proficient in fortune telling. He can calculate good or bad fortune based on your birth date and time.”
He then introduced her to Master Zhong, saying, "This is Mo'er's newlywed wife. Today, I mainly want you to take a look at my daughter-in-law's fortune and the trend of her relationship with Mo'er."
Perhaps fearing that Meng Lingge might overthink things, Princess Anshun explained, "This marriage should have been arranged before the wedding, but the two children's wedding was rather rushed, and there wasn't enough time, so it's been delayed until now. Now that the two children have a good relationship, we don't need to look at anything else regarding their marriage; we can just look at their children's palace."
Princess Anshun controlled the household affairs and wouldn't let Meng Lingge take over. It wasn't that she was unwilling to give up power, but rather that she wanted her son and daughter-in-law to have a child soon and didn't want trivial matters to take up too much of Meng Lingge's time.
Master Zhong nodded, then ordered someone to bring paper and pen, and handed them to Meng Lingge, saying, "Please have the Princess Consort write down your birth date and time here."
Meng Lingge took the paper and quickly wrote a beautiful regular script on it, saying, "Thank you for your trouble, Daoist Master."
Zhong Shensuan examined the birth date and time written in regular script, then took out another piece of paper with Wen Zhiming's birth date and time written on it earlier. His eyes darted back and forth between the two pieces of paper, and his fingers kept calculating.
After a long silence, he sighed heavily.
Princess Anshun's heart raced at the sigh, and she stood up, saying, "Master Zhong, what do you mean? Could it be that the two of them have no children?"
She believed the two children were a perfect match, so she only asked Master Zhong to examine their children's palaces. Now that Master Zhong was sighing, she naturally suspected that the two were not blessed with children.
Master Zhong shook his head and looked at Meng Lingge, saying, "It's not just that. The birth dates of the Crown Prince and his wife clash, so they should never have become husband and wife. Unfortunately, they are now married, so they are destined to be a resentful couple."
Princess Anshun frowned in displeasure. "Master Zhong, I only asked you to look at their children's palaces, not their love lines. These two have been loving and affectionate since their marriage, and it's impossible for them to become a resentful couple."
This was the first time Princess Anshun had questioned Zhong Shensuan's words, but Zhong Shensuan was not angry and spoke eloquently.
"To examine the children's palace, one must first examine the spouse palace. The Crown Princess's element is water, while the Crown Prince's element is fire. These two elements are incompatible. The Crown Princess's water element is too strong, which suppresses the Crown Prince's health and fortune. If they stay together for a long time, the Crown Prince will surely die young."
Princess Anshun was so frightened that she stood frozen in place.
She was indeed very satisfied with Meng Lingge. Even when Zhong Shensuan said that Meng Lingge and An'er would become a bitter couple, she thought it was just that after spending so much time together, Meng Lingge had become less patient, and the couple had some quarrels.
She can accept it.
But now it's so serious that it threatens An'er's life.
That would absolutely not work.
This is her only child, more important than her own life.
But should we abandon such a good daughter-in-law just because of Zhong Shensuan's words?
This was not what she wanted either.
She subconsciously looked at Meng Lingge and Wen Zhiming.
Meng Lingge remained calm, but Wen Zhiming suddenly stood up.
"Nonsense, you liar! Don't you dare talk about my wife like that!"
His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked ready to beat Zhong Shensuan up if he continued to spout nonsense.
Wen Kehao, who had been silent all along, stepped forward to comfort him and made him sit down. He then asked Zhong Shensuan, "Is there a way to break this?"
"To break this, the two must separate. They must divorce, have the wife leave, or send the Crown Princess back to her parents' home, to another residence. In short, they must not be allowed to meet. Only in this way can the Crown Prince's life be saved," Zhong Shensuan said solemnly, stroking his white beard.
