Chapter 15 Selling Sandworms at the Dock

Chen Zhiyao walked over happily, only to find a small nest of spicy snails, and they were quite big too.

The light yellow substance underneath the snail is the snail's eggs.

Spicy snails

Spicy snails are the most common type of snail found on the coast, typically living in shallow seas or mudflats among rocks, reefs, or seaweed.

It has a conical shape, with fine spiral patterns on the shell surface. The color is mostly brown or yellowish-brown, and usually has brown or red spots or stripes.

Spicy snails are named for their pungent flavor, a unique taste that makes them a favorite food for many.

It's delicious whether used in soups, stir-fries, or barbecues, but the most common way to eat it in the Chen family is by blanching it.

Fresh ingredients often only require the simplest cooking methods.

Chen Zhiyao took all the large snails, leaving only a layer of light yellow snail eggs.

Then she lifted the rocks in front of her and found two more snails at the bottom.

These snails are quite large, each one bigger than her finger. If she took them to a purchasing station, they could easily sell for ten or twenty yuan per kilogram.

Thinking that there was still plenty of time, Chen Zhiyao happily looked around again.

Spicy snails always appear in nests; it would be great if we could find a nest of spicy snails.

Whether it was due to the beachcombing system or not, Chen Zhiyao was indeed lucky today. Before long, she found a large nest of snails between two large reefs.

These little guys were so densely packed together, they looked to weigh at least several pounds, which made Chen Zhiyao tremble with excitement.

Large Spicy Snail Nest

Chen Zhiyao took the net, placed it under the stone to catch the snails, and then quickly scooped them up.

The mesh of the net was sparse, and the smaller snails fell right in, but she ignored the smaller ones and only took the larger ones.

This is their local custom when beachcombing; they don't want to kill everything, so small seafood that hasn't grown up is usually released back into the wild.

After walking a while longer, she came across several large rocks nearby, many of which were covered with snails, which made her very happy.

Chen Zhiyao held a handful of spicy snails in her hands and dropped them into the bucket with a splash, the snails making a crisp and pleasant sound as they collided.

At this moment, Chen Zhiyao's smile became even brighter and more radiant, shining brightly in the sunlight, like a blooming rose.

When we went back, both of the net bags we brought were filled with large spicy snails, and we almost couldn't carry them all the way back.

Although she was so tired that she could barely straighten her back, Chen Zhiyao couldn't hide her joy.

These snails weigh at least twenty pounds, plus the half-bucket of sandworms we just dug up, they should sell for at least a thousand yuan.

By then, the sun had already set on the sea, turning the originally blue ocean into a magnificent gold.

Sunset

Chen Zhiyao admired the beautiful scenery before her, carrying her bountiful harvest, and hummed a little tune as she walked towards the dock.

Such beautiful scenery, how wonderful it would be to take a walk with a handsome guy, but unfortunately she's just a single dog.

However, Chen Zhiyao quickly shook her head, "Handsome guys are no match for the sandworms in the bucket, making money is more important."

Chen Zhiyao quickened her pace to where she had parked her car, intending to go home first.

At that time, only Grandma Chen was at home, and the old lady was picking vegetables to prepare dinner.

"So many sandworms, did you dig them all yourself?" Grandma Chen could hardly believe her eyes when she saw the half-bucket of sandworms in her granddaughter's hand.

"I dug them all myself, isn't that amazing?" Chen Zhiyao said, hands on her hips, a smug smile on her face.

Grandma Chen looked at her innocent and mischievous granddaughter and laughed happily along with her.

"There are still so many snails left, you should hurry up and take them to the purchasing station, why did you come back home?"

“When I went to dig for sandworms, I ran into my aunt. She gave me more than a pound of sandworms, saying it was a gift for you and Grandpa.”

As he spoke, he took a clean bucket from the kitchen and scooped out three large handfuls of sandworms. He also left two pounds of spicy snails at home.

We also set aside the seven scallops we just dug up for our own consumption.

Grandma Chen looked at the more than one pound of sandworms and the rather large clams in the bucket and wanted her granddaughter to take them to sell.

However, Chen Zhiyao didn't give her that chance. She put down her things and immediately drove off in her tricycle.

Thinking that the price at the town's purchasing station would be higher, she went directly to the town's dock.

And I must say, the pier at dusk, bathed in the glow of the setting sun, has a unique charm.

The pier at dusk

At this time, fishermen who had gone out to sea to fish began to return one after another, and the dock was very lively.

Besides the fishing boats docked there, there were also many fishmongers, seafood restaurant buyers, and people who came from the county to buy seafood.

The large fishing boats were already bustling with familiar fishmongers buying up the catch.

Some fishermen and beachcombers also set up stalls on the pier.

Chen Zhiyao saw that there were already several people setting up stalls to sell their catch at the dock, and several people who came to buy seafood were gathered around them.

Thinking that he might be able to make more money by setting up a stall here, he stopped his tricycle and started selling his wares right there on the dock.

"Freshly dug sandworms, don't miss out!"

"Sandworms are 110 yuan per jin, and spicy snails are 30 yuan per jin. Handsome guys and beautiful ladies, come and take a look!"

This price is slightly lower than the market price, but significantly higher than the price offered by the purchasing station.

In recent years, the number of sandworms has been decreasing, and their price has risen significantly. Hearing about the availability of sandworms has indeed attracted many fishmongers and seafood buyers.

However, these people saw that Chen Zhiyao was young and tried to drive down the price very hard.

The prices offered by some fishmongers were even lower than those offered by the purchasing station; sandworms were only 50 yuan per jin, and snails were 15 yuan per jin.

This price made Chen Zhiyao laugh in anger. Although you have to bargain when you buy things, you can't just give her an arbitrary price.

She didn't want to deal with these people, and without even asking for a price, she turned her head to look at the people who had come to buy seafood.

They were a few shrewd middle-aged women, and they clearly knew each other. These aunties were not easy to deal with; they were all experts at bargaining.

They drove a long way to buy seafood, not only because the seafood here is fresh, but also because they wanted to buy cheap seafood.

After much haggling, Chen Zhiyao was ultimately no match for these battle-hardened women.

In the end, the group bought up all the things Chen Zhiyao had brought, at 85 yuan per jin for sandworms and 23 yuan per jin for snails.

7 jin of sandworms, 85 yuan per jin, totaling 595 yuan. 18 jin of spicy snails, 23 yuan per jin, totaling 414 yuan.

Chen Zhiyao opened her WeChat Wallet, and the backend showed that a total of 1,009 yuan had been deposited.

I earned 1300 yesterday, and 1610 this morning from beachcombing. Adding what I just earned, I've earned 3919 in two days.

When she got back, Chen Zhiyao was overjoyed. The money she earned from beachcombing in the past two days was equivalent to half a month's salary.

Let whoever wants to be in this dog class go; I'll just stay home and go beachcombing from now on.

When I got home, Grandma Chen had already prepared dinner: sandworm porridge, stir-fried spicy snails, steamed scallops with vermicelli, and a stir-fried water spinach.

After eating and drinking her fill, Chen Zhiyao quickly went back to her room to check her current points.

Host: Chen Zhiyao

Level: 1 (Beachcombing)

Points: 3334

Perspective range: 1 meter

Transparent time: 1 hour

Tools for beachcombing: sand shovel, iron shovel, tongs, spade.

Seeing the points, Xiaomeng was very happy. "Tangtang, it looks like you'll be able to reach level 2 in just a few days!"

"That's what I think too. Once we upgrade to level 2, we can set up crab traps and water pumps."

Thinking about the money she earned from beachcombing these past two days, Chen Zhiyao smiled so much that crow's feet appeared at the corners of her eyes.

I got up early this morning to go beachcombing. After a busy day, the Chen family was quiet at night and went to sleep early.

(Does everyone get tired of going beachcombing every day? Please leave me a message if you have any requests or suggestions; I'll read all the comments! ( ˉ???ˉ?? )?)
