Chapter 70 Retrieving the Fishing Net

A few years ago, Chen Zhiyao took the fishing boat driving test right after finishing her college entrance examination.

However, she hasn't sailed a boat for three years since the family's fishing boat was sold, and she has forgotten many things.

These past two days at sea, she's been the one driving the boat most of the time, and her movements are noticeably a bit rusty and nervous.

Fortunately, with Grandpa Chen, an experienced person, keeping an eye on things, nothing went wrong.

The fishing boat was very close to the location of the first fishing net, so Grandpa Chen let her drive the boat alone.

Without the old man's help and reminders, Chen Zhiyao was noticeably more nervous when steering the boat, appearing flustered and clumsy.

Fortunately, they escaped unharmed and soon reached the rocky beach in the shallow water.

There was a small crane at the stern, which quickly pulled up the mesh with small holes.

The nets are almost entirely filled with small fish that live under the rocks, and the species are quite diverse.

Fearing the fish would lose their vitality after being taken out of the water, the two quickly untied the catch from the first fishing net.

Most of them were red sea bream, black sea bream, and white pomfret, with a small number of worthless small fish.

Most of the red sea bream and black sea bream weigh a little over one pound, with only two larger ones weighing around two and a half pounds.

White pomfret is larger, generally around two pounds.

The catch of these fish filled just enough to fill a bucket of live fish, weighing about forty pounds. There were also about ten pounds of small, worthless miscellaneous fish.

The grandfather and grandson worked quickly, cleaning up the valuable fish and putting them into the live water tank.

Cheap, miscellaneous fish were casually put into buckets, just in time to be used as bait for crab traps and fish traps the next day.

Chen Zhiyao thought that the catch from this first net of fish would be worth at least one or two thousand yuan, so she quickly woke up the little dream in her mind:

"Xiaomeng, do these fish caught with gillnets count towards the beachcombing points?"

"Yes, it's calculated. Except for the catch from fishing, which is counted separately, all other catches are counted as part of beachcombing and can be scored."

Chen Zhiyao was especially happy to learn that the fish caught from the fishing net also counted towards her points.

At her current rate of earning money, she'll probably be able to upgrade to level 3 of the beachcombing system in a few days.

Unlocking the fishing section is just around the corner.

I think I'll be able to buy the lucky fishing rod I had my eye on soon.

Grandpa Chen, seeing his granddaughter lost in thought, gently patted her shoulder and urged her:

"What are you daydreaming about? Weren't we supposed to be collecting the crab traps?"

"Yes, yes, we need to collect the traps."

Although Chen Zhiyao's consciousness entered the beachcombing system in her mind, she could still sense the situation outside. As soon as Grandpa Chen spoke, she reacted.

There are five crab traps in this area. The first one is empty of crabs; it's almost entirely filled with octopuses.

Octopus is reasonably priced, but it's quite delicious stir-fried or used in seafood noodles.

There weren't many of them, so Chen Zhiyao packed them up separately, intending to take them home.

The later crab traps yielded better results, mostly blue crabs and mud crabs, along with a few small squid.

Chen Zhiyao roughly estimated that there were 1 jin of octopus, 2 jin of cuttlefish, 3 jin of orchid crab, and 3 jin of mud crab.

I don't know if it was because the timing was wrong, but the harvest from these crab traps was much worse than that from the mangrove traps.

Immediately afterwards, the fishing boat stopped on the outer edge of the deep-water rocky beach, and Chen Weiqiang could be seen in the distance, focused on fishing.

The fishing net was quickly pulled up by the crane, and the catch appeared to be more than the first net.

When the fishing net was pulled up, all you could see were mostly gray-black fish.

The turbot schools from the rocky shore have probably all migrated here; there are quite a few turbot weighing around two pounds each in the net.

It took the two of them another half hour to finally untangle all the fish from the fishing net.

Apart from a few white pomfret and black eagles, the turbot filled two large buckets.

Although the price of turbot is not high, its weight has doubled compared to the previous catch, so the overall price is estimated to be similar to the first catch.

However, the crab cages here gave Chen Zhiyao a pleasant surprise.

The first crab trap we pulled up contained two small green lobsters weighing nearly a pound each.

These two green creatures alone are worth as much as the catch from the previous five fish traps.

The next four earthworms also yielded good results; she caught two conger eels, a 3-pound pearl grouper, and several pounds of crabs.

The grandfather and grandson had just sorted the various fish by type when they suddenly heard a loud "plop" from ahead.

Amidst a huge wave, the two spotted Chen Weiqiang, who had been fishing on the shore.

For some reason, he jumped into the water.

The two were very anxious, so they quickly put on life jackets and paddled their small boat to find him.

As the small boat drew closer, the two finally figured out what was going on.

At that moment, Chen Weiqiang was tightly gripping the broken half of his fishing rod. Meanwhile, the large fish in the sea was still struggling desperately.

Chen Zhiyao had to admire her father; he really went all out for fishing.

Without saying a word, the two quickly rowed their small boat over to help.

Fortunately, the fish in the sea was already exhausted, and it wasn't long before the three of them worked together to pull it onto the kayak.

After the fish was pulled up, Chen Zhiyao's mouth gaped open; it was a giant pearl grouper weighing about 10 pounds.

She had never seen such a large grouper before.

Although this guy is a bit ugly, it's grown to this size, so its price could probably double.

At this moment, Chen Weiqiang was soaking wet, with many scratches from the rocks on his body, but he looked excited and thrilled.

Such a big grouper almost got away, but luckily he was quick and jumped down immediately after it.

Grandpa Chen looked at his carefree son and couldn't help but mutter to himself.

At this moment, Chen Weiqiang was holding the 10-pound grouper and grinning like an idiot, just like Ah Huang at home, and didn't have time to pay any attention to him.

Fortunately, the fishing boat wasn't far away, and the three of them quickly returned to the boat.

Grandpa Chen tossed a spare set of clothes to his son with a look of disgust, telling him to change quickly.

However, when she turned her head, her eyes were filled with undisguised envy.

How come he can't catch a 10-pound grouper?

Chen Zhiyao caught only small fish today, and she was actually quite envious.

Thinking about the little blue dragons and rat-like creatures on the ship made me feel a little better; at least I had earned money and points.

In the end, Grandpa Chen had the worst catch today. Although he caught a big fish weighing over ten kilograms, it was a worthless sea wolf.

Chen Zhiyao glanced at the old man with schadenfreude. Today's catch probably wouldn't even be enough to treat him to dinner tomorrow.

go home

On the return trip, Chen Zhiyao still drove the boat.

After two days of practical training, she has gradually regained her feel for the car and is driving quite well now.

Seagull Island is very close to the village, but getting to the town's pier requires a long detour.

It took Chen Zhiyao nearly an hour and a half to get the fishing boat to the town's dock.

Meanwhile, Mr. Yang was already standing next to the purchasing station's vehicle, waiting anxiously.
