Chapter 13 Digging for Sandworms 1

Thinking that the afternoon's harvest would not be as good as the morning's when the tide had just receded, Chen Weiqiang decided to go back to check on the shop.

Several packages just arrived at the courier point, and Yan Shuting needs to sort them out.

As for Grandpa Chen and Grandma Chen, they still have 200 free-range chickens and shrimp ponds to take care of in the orchard, so they don't have time to go beachcombing.

So in the afternoon, only Chen Zhiyao went to the beach alone.

Having just finished lunch and without even taking a break, Chen Zhiyao hurriedly put a large handful of crab-tying ropes into the bucket.

Crabs like to fight, and if they're not tied up and end up with missing limbs, their price drops drastically.

Besides the rope, there were two net bags and a tan sack.

After packing her things, Chen Zhiyao excitedly drove her family's tricycle to the village's dock.

As she walked over, she glanced towards the rocky beach and saw that it was indeed crowded with people, several times more than in the morning.

There are so many things over there, even if there are good ones, you might not be able to grab them. If you split the spoils, you probably won't even get as much as if you went beachcombing.

She decided not to go over there and join the fun.

Knowing that the vehicle would slip on the mudflats, Chen Zhiyao parked the tricycle near the dock.

As soon as I parked the car, I looked towards the beach and saw that there were indeed far fewer people.

Seeing that the scenery was nice, Chen Zhiyao took out her phone and casually took a few photos of the beach.

"Great, blue sky and white clouds, any one of these pictures could be used as wallpaper."

White sand beach

Wearing gloves, Chen Zhiyao carried a bucket in one hand and tongs in the other, walking briskly towards the mudflats ahead.

My dear little money, I'm here!!

The mudflats here are not the kind of muddy ground where you sink into it as soon as you step on it. Instead, there is only a thin layer of black mud on the surface, with sand underneath and rocks of all sizes hidden in it.

There are usually many oysters or barnacles on the rocks. Their shells are very sharp, so you must wear thick-soled shoes when walking on them, otherwise you can easily get cut.

If someone dares to go barefoot to the beach, Chen Zhiyao can only admire him as a true hero.

Although the scenery on the mudflats was different from that on the white sand beach, it was just as beautiful. Chen Zhiyao casually took another beautiful photo.

mudflats

Since I came back, I haven't posted anything about beachcombing on my WeChat Moments yet. I thought I'd post something to make my friends who are still working hard at their jobs envious.

After posting the stunning photos she had just taken and her own beautiful pictures, Chen Zhiyao put her phone away and began to seriously go beachcombing.

Without X-ray vision, she could only look around and carefully examine every inch of the ground beneath her feet.

Suddenly, a small puddle next to a rock seemed to ripple slightly.

Upon closer inspection, I saw shallow ripples appearing on the surface of the puddle, followed by a small bubble emerging.

Upon closer inspection, wow, it turned out to be a rather large crab lying quietly in the small puddle. The creature wasn't moving at all, except for its eyes.

Can you guess where the eyes are?

The crab was almost completely blended into the mud below her body; if it weren't for the bubbles that were rising, she would have almost missed it.

Chen Zhiyao used the all-purpose tongs in her hand to pick up the well-disguised big guy.

Covered in mud, she couldn't immediately tell what kind of crab it was.

There happened to be a small puddle nearby, so Chen Zhiyao put the creature in for a bath, which revealed its true form: a large, bright green blue crab.

Blue crab

Chen Zhiyao picked it up with a smile and weighed it in her hand; it was quite heavy.

"I just arrived and found a big blue crab weighing seven or eight ounces. Looks like I'm having good luck today."

As he spoke, he took out a rope used for tying crabs from the bucket and skillfully tied the swaggering big guy up tightly.

Putting the creature in the bucket, Chen Zhiyao hummed a cheerful tune, picked up the small blue bucket, and continued walking forward.

I had only taken two steps when I saw a long, small crack at my feet.

Chen Zhiyao thought it was a giant hairy clam and reached out to grab it, but she couldn't pull it out. Moreover, it felt wrong; it was flat and looked a bit like a scallop.

With a small shovel, Chen Zhiyao quickly dug out the big guy inside, which turned out to be a clam as big as her palm.

Scallops are abundant in the coastal areas of Guangdong and Hainan. After being dried, they become dried scallops.

However, fresh scallops are not expensive; small ones cost seven or eight yuan each, and large ones cost more than ten yuan each, but these are all market prices.

If you take it to a purchasing point, the price will only be half. A cat this big would only fetch five or six yuan at most.

Although this stuff isn't expensive, it's delicious when steamed with rice flour.

The thought of steamed scallops with vermicelli made Chen Zhiyao's mouth water.

After tossing the large object in her hand into the bucket, Chen Zhiyao started looking around for scallops, planning to find a few more to steam with vermicelli that night.

Chen Zhiyao, who was happily digging for ribbons, had completely forgotten that she had come to dig for sandworms.

However, these shellfish generally like to live in groups. Sure enough, when I looked up, I saw another scallop with its mouth open just two steps away.

Another belt

After digging up several clams, Chen Zhiyao belatedly realized that she had come to find sandworms.

After walking another 10 meters or so, I saw that the ground beneath my feet had been dug into a pitted and uneven area.

Ahead, there was a woman wearing a straw hat digging for sand worms. She was very quick, and in just a few moments, she dug out a pink and tender sand worm that was still wriggling.

The basket behind him was already half full of plump sandworms, weighing about seven or eight pounds.

The woman turned around, and it turned out to be an old acquaintance. Chen Zhiyao obediently stepped forward to greet her.

"Auntie, you've come to dig for sandworms again today. Looks like you've had a good harvest."

This woman is Huang Yufen, the wife of Chen Weiqiang's elder brother. She is a skilled sandworm digger in the village and earns a good amount of money every year by digging sandworms.

Although her uncle and father had separated their households, the two brothers had always had a good relationship, and her aunt had even taught her how to dig for sandworms.

However, Chen Zhiyao didn't have the talent for this. Every time she came to dig for sandworms, she could only find a few, never more than 10.

If she hadn't been thinking about using X-ray glasses to cheat, she would have preferred to go beachcombing rather than come here to dig for sandworms.

"The tide went out today, so the harvest was pretty good. Take some sandworms home and make porridge."

As she spoke, the enthusiastic aunt grabbed a handful of sandworms and was about to put them into the bucket in her hand.

Chen Zhiyao quickly pressed down on her aunt's hand, "No need, no need, I'm here to dig for sandworms too."

These sandworms cost sixty yuan a pound, and when the price is good, they can sell for 70 yuan a pound. She was too embarrassed to accept something so expensive.

When villagers go beachcombing, they mostly collect various shellfish that aren't very valuable. They usually sell the expensive and good stuff instead of keeping it for themselves.

My aunt, whose skin was tanned from the sun, pretended to be angry and said, "You silly child, this is for your grandparents to nourish their bodies."

After hearing this, Chen Zhiyao couldn't refuse, since the woman was being filial to her parents-in-law.

Auntie put two large handfuls of sandworms directly into Chen Zhiyao's bucket, enough for the family of five to cook porridge.
