"Thank you for coming so late." Yan Nangui smiled.
"These are all His Majesty's decrees, and I dare not disobey them," Physician Huang said with a smile.
"Then I won't go to express my gratitude today. Let's talk about it tomorrow," Yan Nangui said.
Physician Huang smiled but didn't dare to respond. He then gave Jiangxiang a few more instructions about her diet and left.
Siwu Decoction is a folk remedy, but it is commonly used by women and is readily available at the Imperial Hospital.
You can drink it anytime.
After drinking it, Yan Nangui lay down on the soft couch and fell asleep.
That night I really felt warmer. When I woke up the next day, I didn't feel any pain.
However, even if it doesn't hurt, one shouldn't go to pay respects; one should simply say that it still hurts, and the Empress won't pursue the matter.
Although the pain has subsided, her period is definitely not comfortable.
So, when the emperor came in the afternoon, he found her curled up on the bed reading a book.
She didn't get up when she saw him, but instead reached out her hand coquettishly, "Your Majesty!"
Shu Chengfeng stood there looking at her: "You used to say that you didn't care about me because I was cold, but now you don't say that anymore?" Shu Chengfeng smiled.
Someone took off his cloak.
He then walked over.
"His Majesty came all the way to see me, what else can I say? It's better to be cold than to have him come." Yan Nangui tossed the book aside.
Shu Chengfeng's hands weren't cold, and he reached out to touch her face: "Didn't Physician Huang prescribe any medicine for you yesterday?"
“What’s the use of taking medicine? He said I’m still feeling cold. Yesterday they rushed to put some cotton quilts on me, and I feel much better.” Yan Nangui said, half-truthfully.
Shu Chengfeng touched the bed and smiled: "It's thick enough."
"Yunji," Shu Chengfeng called out.
"Yes, Your subordinate is here." Yun Ji came over, but didn't come in; he just stood at the door.
Although he was a eunuch, he had grown up with guards and still subconsciously held the idea of gender distinction.
"I remember when I was still in the palace, wasn't it Father Emperor who bestowed some furs upon me one year? Some were fox furs, weren't they?"
"Ah, yes, I remember now. They were tributes from the west, about ten of them. They were all brought into the palace when they arrived, and I even saw them. Not only were there fox furs, but also white fox furs, and top-quality sheepskins. Those sheepskins were really good, the wool was even shiny. There are also some in the palace storerooms. The west sends some as tribute every year."
"Hmm, there's no point in leaving them. You should call them out and bring them all out." Shu Chengfeng pondered for a moment.
"Use the fox furs to make cloaks and distribute them to the Empress Dowager and the Empress Dowager. Ten cloaks should be enough to make several. Send one to the Duchess of Ye as well."
"Make one white fox fur coat for Consort Ye, Consort Su, and Lady Murong and Lady Yan. Also make one for Consort Jiang and Lady Huo."
"Select a few good sheepskins and have them made into cushions for the beds here. Both the inside and outside are needed. Tell them to be careful with the needlework and to finish quickly. That stuff is excellent at insulating against the cold. I never thought of that before."
"Thank you very much, Your Majesty," Yan Nangui said with a smile.
"What other tributes came from the Western Regions?"
“Then there are spices, which you didn’t like in the past,” Yun Ji said.
"Yes, take some out and distribute them as rewards to various places. Whoever likes them can use them," Shu Chengfeng said.
However, Yun Ji thought to himself, "They've been around in other places before, but if you don't like them, who would dare to use them? Wouldn't that mean they don't want to see you?"
"Then there are some decorative items, which are quite interesting," Yun Ji added.
"No need for the ornaments, we can talk about them later. Go and get it done, tell someone to do it as soon as possible," Shu Chengfeng said.
Yun Ji agreed and left, knowing full well that this must be about sheepskin rugs.
Making a cloak doesn't take that long.
Shu Chengfeng couldn't stay overnight, so he left after having dinner.
That afternoon, everyone knew that His Majesty had given a grand reward to the harem.
This fox fur cloak is not a common item; it is not easily obtained.
The Empress Dowager didn't care. She had feelings for Emperor Jingrun back then, even though Emperor Jingrun had many concubines.
But he treated his first wife well.
Therefore, there are still such items in the Empress Dowager's storeroom.
But for the Empress Dowager, this was truly the first time she had ever done so.
When the late emperor was still a prince, he was not particularly outstanding. After Consort Wei passed away, he became even less favored.
For several years after marrying Ye, things remained lukewarm.
I can't get such a good thing.
After Ye Shi finally became empress, she gradually drifted apart from the late emperor.
Later, the situation escalated to the point where the empress was almost deposed, and such rewards were no longer possible.
Now, hearing about her son's filial piety, she naturally feels comforted.
Needless to say, the Empress was naturally delighted.
“These fox furs are truly rare; there are only a few available, and you have one of a kind,” Su Jin said with a smile.
"So, what about the Ye family?" The Empress shook her head.
"Why does Your Majesty think that way? His Majesty gave it to the Grand Empress Dowager because she is an elder, and to the Empress Dowager because she is His Majesty's own mother. Naturally, she will receive some benefits. You are His Majesty's first wife, and you should rightfully receive some of the good things. But you don't need to care about what the Duchess of Ye has."
“After all, she is His Majesty’s maternal grandmother. Besides, wouldn’t it be better to give her to her than to give her to Consort Ye?” Su Jin said.
The Empress smiled and said, "That's true. But it seems His Majesty thought of this while in Chaochun Palace. Could it be that Lady Yan wanted it?"
“This servant does not know, but this servant heard this morning that Imperial Physician Huang went to Chaochun Palace last night. This servant inquired and found that there was nothing else going on at Chaochun Palace, and it was just her period. Consort Yan’s health is really not good,” Su Jin said.
The Empress nodded: "Sometimes, no one is perfect. Look at her health, His Majesty is so worried. He even summoned Physician Huang so late at night. I suppose he has given her quite a reward today."
Su Jin and the others agreed, as they were still unaware that Shu Chengfeng had ordered the mats to be made.
The next day, the hastily made sheepskin cushions were delivered to Zhaochun Palace.
The bed in the main hall was only slightly narrower than a bed, so it wouldn't protrude.
There was one on the soft couch in the outer room, and another one in the warm pavilion in the partition room.
These three places alone used more than ten sheets of paper.
The people who delivered the mats were from the sewing and needlework department. And not just these three.
"There are still some left over from the cutting, so we quickly made another small piece. We heard that Your Highness likes to paint, so we thought we could put one of these on the floor of the study. This is a good thing for keeping out the cold in winter. Please don't mind that it was pieced together, Your Highness."
"It looks so good, I don't mind at all," Yan Nangui said with a smile.
It was indeed well done; the white sheepskin was mixed with pieces of fox fur.
I reckon they're all scraps from making cloaks. They're quite exquisite, actually shaped into several flower patterns.
Laying this sheepskin mat directly on the study floor looks warm and cozy.
As Yan Nangui looked at the painting, he felt inspired to paint.
This is my first time entering the palace.
