Chapter 63
63.
After quickly washing up, Guan Yue looked at the sky and found that it was about the same time she usually got up. It seemed that her biological clock had been adjusted, even though she was newly married.
She usually goes to bed early and gets up early, after all, she has many hungry animals and plants. Usually, she would go to check on them as soon as she got up. But now, after washing her face, she went to Li Guang's room first. She gently opened the door, saw that the child inside was sleeping soundly, then closed the door again. She went back to her new room and saw that Cheng Lingjun was also sleeping soundly. Only then did she feel relieved and go to do other things.
She wasn't in a hurry to eat after getting up; she first fed the rabbits and chicks in the yard, afraid they would go hungry. Fortunately, she had reduced the number of them in preparation for the wedding, so feeding them didn't take much effort. After feeding the ones in the yard, she hurriedly ran to her vegetable garden, not to tend to the plants, but to pick some vegetables for breakfast.
Guan Yue knew Cheng Lingjun's wake-up time. Although he woke up a little later than her, people in ancient times loved to get up early. She wanted to cook the meal before they got up so that they would have something to eat as soon as they woke up.
Guan Yue has a slight obsessive-compulsive disorder, though it's not very obvious. It probably developed during her school days. She has to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and she has to keep the books she's read and the ones she hasn't read separate. She also has to do things in order, and she likes an organized and even regular life. Sometimes she can be a bit rigid, but if things get messy, she feels awkward and uncomfortable.
Fortunately, as she got older, her obsessive-compulsive disorder improved a lot, but at certain times, those problems would suddenly resurface.
For example, now she gets up early and doesn't stay in bed just because she's newly married. She eats breakfast when it's time. Cheng Lingjun and Li Guang have become her family, and she consciously starts making arrangements for them. And because they are family, even these ordinary things that she's used to doing have become sweet.
Guan Yue was enthusiastically cooking porridge when someone suddenly appeared behind her, almost startling her so much that she dropped her rice spoon.
"Why did you get up? Didn't you wake me?" Cheng Lingjun asked in a hoarse voice, and Guan Yue could hear a hint of displeasure in his words.
When Cheng Lingjun woke up, he thought Guan Yue was still in bed, but he looked around and saw no one. There was no one in the room either. When he went to the kitchen, he found that she had already started cooking.
Guan Yue's hand trembled. "Ahem, well, I was just checking because you were still asleep..."
“You can wake me up,” Cheng Lingjun said, her coat was just draped over her shoulders and her hair was unkempt, clearly indicating that she had gone straight to Guan Yue after waking up.
"It's okay, you can sleep longer," Guan Yue said softly, "After all, you're tired too..."
Cheng Lingjun's ears turned red. He had actually gotten up later than usual. It had been too long since he had done "that," and he was still sleepy when he woke up. He didn't expect Guan Yue to act like nothing had happened. Judging from her appearance, she must have been up for quite a while.
Guan Yue put the pot lid back on, wiped her hands, and pushed Cheng Lingjun out. "Wash your face first. The porridge will be ready soon. I'll call you when it's done. There's smoke and ash all over the place here, so you don't need to stay here. Check if Xiao Guang is awake yet."
Cheng Lingjun didn't want to leave, but when she heard Guan Yue mention Li Guang, she hesitated and was pushed out.
Cheng Lingjun was refused entry; Guan Yue clearly didn't want him to come in and even closed the door. He had no choice but to go back inside and open the door to Li Guang's room.
Li Guang seemed exhausted; he had gone to bed later than usual last night and was already very sleepy. Hearing the door open, he groggily opened his eyes, saw Cheng Lingjun, rubbed his eyes, and mumbled, "Father..."
Cheng Lingjun patted his head and asked, "Are you still sleepy?"
Li Guang shook his head. He felt something was off. Cheng Lingjun helped him sit up, and he realized the problem. "Dad, this...this isn't our room."
Cheng Lingjun laughed and said, "Of course not, Xiao Guang, have you forgotten? You've already moved into Guan Yue's... no, you should call her Mother now."
Li Guang was still a little confused and surprised, "Then, then I should call Guan Yue... Mother?"
His little face looked a bit worried. Cheng Lingjun didn't know if he was not used to it or unwilling, and she didn't want to force him. She hesitated and said, "I guess so... never mind, you should get up first, the sun is already high in the sky."
Li Guang's attention was diverted by him. He put on his shoes and asked Cheng Lingjun to help him put on his clothes. Cheng Lingjun shook his head helplessly, knowing that Li Guang was just being affectionate. So he helped him put on one piece of clothing and let him put on the rest himself. The two of them then went to wash up.
Li Guang was actually quite familiar with Guan Yue's house, but since he rarely went inside to play, he looked around and kept looking around. Cheng Lingjun had basically looked around yesterday. There wasn't much to see in Guan Yue's house. It was empty. The things were arranged neatly, but apart from the large room which had more items, the rest of the house was practically empty. Compared to the house opposite where Cheng Lingjun lived, it was simply shabby.
Cheng Lingjun was secretly thinking about what to put here as decoration. The two of them had already walked into the courtyard, and Guan Yue had placed breakfast on the table outside.
In the village, people generally don't eat indoors. Those with courtyards eat in their courtyards, while those without go to the door or roadside. If they live nearby, they'll take their bowls and go around visiting other people's homes to see what they're eating. Guan Yue and Cheng Lingjun don't live near many houses, and they're not used to eating out, so they usually eat in their courtyards.
Guan Yue made a simple sweet potato porridge, with fried eggs and a small dish of stir-fried chrysanthemum greens on the side. She was calling to the two of them, "Hurry up and eat, are you hungry?"
"It's alright," Cheng Lingjun said, surprised that Guan Yue had prepared the food so quickly. Although it was all easy cooking, she added, "You got up very early?"
Guan Yue was bringing them bowls and chopsticks when she casually said, "No, I usually get up around the same time."
Cheng Lingjun felt a little uneasy. Last night was supposed to be her wedding night, but it really didn't interfere with her at all, did it?
"What?" Guan Yue suddenly asked.
Cheng Lingjun then realized that she had accidentally muttered her true feelings out loud. She quickly composed herself and bent down to straighten Li Guang's clothes: "It's nothing, Xiao Guang, do you want some vegetables?"
“I won’t eat it…” Li Guang had no liking for green vegetables at all.
Cheng Lingjun naturally ignored his request and calmly picked up some chrysanthemum greens for him, saying, "You can't be picky about food. This is what your mother prepared for you a long time ago."
Guan Yue was so startled she almost fell off her chair. She held onto the edge of the table and said, "Actually, it's okay if you don't call me 'Mother.' Of course, I don't mean to be disgusted or anything. It's just that Xiao Guang might not be used to it yet. The child can call you whatever he wants. After all, it's my marriage to you. Just get along like before. Xiao Guang doesn't need to think too much. Just think of it as moving to a different place."
Guan Yue is indeed a single mother. She didn't want to put pressure on Li Guang, knowing that the child would be resistant to such things. Besides, she felt it was strange to call him "Mom." She thought it would be better for everyone to get along in a more relaxed way and change the way they addressed each other later.
Xiao Guang looked at her, then at Cheng Lingjun, and said to the latter, "Then I'll still call her Aunt Guan?"
Cheng Lingjun also breathed a sigh of relief. As long as Guan Yue didn't mind, that was good. He patted Li Guang's head and said, "Okay, you two can call her that if you feel comfortable. But Guan Yue is family now, she's your closest relative. Xiao Guang should treat Aunt Guan like he would his father."
Li Guang nodded, "Xiao Guang knows."
"Alright, alright, let's eat," Guan Yue said with a smile, ladling porridge for them. However, Cheng Lingjun snatched the spoon away, saying that since she did all the work, why did she want to marry him? Guan Yue smiled and said that of course she would marry him and take good care of him at home. Cheng Lingjun glared at her and she dared not do anything out of line.
After Guan Yue came to this world, she had a different body, and her physical strength and energy were exceptionally abundant. Even if she was really tired, she could recover after a short nap. Besides, making breakfast for the person she liked was no big deal for her, and she was very satisfied with her current life.
After the meal, she was also kicked out of the kitchen and not allowed to help with washing dishes and pots. Guan Yue didn't dare to say no, so she went to the fields to do her farm work.
Marrying a husband changed my life a lot, especially since I married a virtuous and capable one.
Cheng Lingjun is very good at taking care of people—Guan Yue had known this for a long time, but after the two became husband and wife, she felt it even more deeply.
She handled all the household chores meticulously. Her simple yard was re-fenced, and the chicks' and rabbits' nests were always kept very clean. The original weeds had long been cleared away by Guan Yue, leaving it bare, but they were gradually being replaced by the flowers and plants planted by Cheng Lingjun, giving it a fresh look every day.
When Guan Yue saw these things, she would always look at Cheng Lingjun with admiration. She was a woman with little interest in life. Before Cheng Lingjun married into the family, she thought she was already very good at managing household affairs. But after Cheng Lingjun came, she felt that she was no different from a caveman.
Cheng Lingjun takes these things very seriously. He is taking good care of the family, which Guan Yue can see. He is even described as busy. Guan Yue advised him that he didn't need to work so hard, but he said that this is what he should do.
Guan Yue was puzzled: "How could this be something you should be doing? You can delegate some tasks to me; you don't have to do everything yourself."
This is what Guan Yue doesn't understand the most. Although in this world, men are supposed to stay at home and women are supposed to work outside, she is not the kind of woman who is a big woman. Moreover, she did not marry Cheng Lingjun so that he would serve her. However, Cheng Lingjun seemed to be afraid that she would get tired. After returning home, she really did not have to lift a finger.
She did enjoy herself, but Guan Yue wasn't the type to indulge in pleasures. She also wanted to take good care of Cheng Lingjun. Cheng Lingjun remained silent for a long time before replying, "I just feel sorry for you."
"What did I do wrong?" Guan Yue was shocked. She felt she owed Cheng Lingjun a lot, so why did Cheng Lingjun think he had wronged her?
Cheng Lingjun looked up at her, her eyes still filled with struggle and resentment. "I told you before, I... I drank the sterilization soup, and I can't give birth to a daughter or son for you."
